I hate Noun Verb Noun bands.
Boy Hits Car
Boy Sets Fire Rock Kills Kid She Wants Revenge These are examples of what I am referring to. Noun Verb Noun. For some reason, these bandnames just rub me the wrong way. I simply cannot take a band with a name like that seriously. Your band's name should not be a fucking sentence, it should be a noun. Or possibly an adjective. Or an adjective followed by a noun. Not a sentence or newpaper headline {PLANE HITS BUILDING; EXPLOSION MAIMS FOUR; I LACK CREATIVITY}. It's possible that I'm just crazy and imagining things, kind of like a few years ago when it seemed like every band's name started with The. The Vines, The Hives, The Donnas, The Annoying Bandnames. Is it just me who feels this way? Do I have some sympathizers here? Are there any other bands that you can think of that fall into this? Are there any trends in music and music related goings-on that just irk you, for some strange reason? Jam it back in, in the dark. I didn't say I wouldn't go fishin' with the man.
All I'm sayin' is, if he comes near me, I'll put him in the wall. |
Some of the names are annoying, yeah, but I don't really care as long as I like the music, e.g. Jimmy Eat World. In fact, thinking about it, that one's kinda funny. A discussion I had with a friend after some concert (Foo Fighters, I think) a few months ago was trying to name this Noun Verb Noun bands, or some other bands, and then just putting them in passive voice (even if it meant chaning the meaning): so, The World Eaten by Jimmy. Revenge Wanted by Her. Quest Called by a Tribe. Downed by a System. Etc.
How ya doing, buddy? |
Are those actual band names? She Wants Revenge I could see as a band title, but... they seem fake.
Personally I'm a little annoyed at the abuse of the use, that every third rapper out there has the prefix "Lil" (Pronounced either as seen, or "Little"). Examples: Lil' Kim, Lil John, Lil' Weezy, Lil' Wayne, Lil' Mo, Lil' Flip, Lil' Scrappy, Lil' Romeo, Lil Wyte, Lil Eazy-E, et cetera, etc.,. I only consider Lil' Kim and Lil' John, to be people who should use the "Lil" Prefix. Its gotten rediculous. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
Instead of Boy Sets Fire Id just use Arsenist. But seriously though these band names make me laugh just a little. From what I've heard, its the "Scene" thing to do now-a-days.

What are your thoughts on:
"Good Charlotte" "Mono Puff" "Green Day" "Coldplay" "Rolling Stones" "High and Mighty Colour" "Slipknot" ? Haha, <adjective><noun>!! What about the strange ones: "Go! Go! 7188" "Sloan" originality points? Or annoying because they tried some random combination or string of letters? I was speaking idiomatically. |
Revenge is both a verb and a noun btw.
What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
The four I listed at the top are actual bands, look them up on amazon.com. I don't pay much {any} attention to the hip hop world {is it still called hip hop or has that become passe}, but I suppose I have heard of several of those Lil's. It's like, guys, if you're going to call yourself something stupid like beginning your name with little, at least spell the whole word out. I am wondering who Big Kim, John, Weezy, Wayne, Mo, Flip, Scrappy, Romeo, Wyte {wtf} are. I am guessing Lil Eazy-E is someone related to the old school rapper Easy-E from the early 1990s.
And nazpyro, putting Noun Verb Noun bands into the passive voice is strange and yet funny. How did you come up with the idea to try to do that? FELIPE NO I didn't say I wouldn't go fishin' with the man.
All I'm sayin' is, if he comes near me, I'll put him in the wall. |
Not in the phrase She Wants Revenge.

The only one up there I care to explain about is Lil' Jon: Lil' Jon is the crazy man who popularized the word "Crunk" as well as "Crunk" Music, which is fast paced hip-hop mainly to be played in clubs and other dance venues. He is almost always seen with Glasses, a tipped hat, and a Chalice, usually with the Words Lil' Jon or Crunk written on it. He also does slower songs from time to time, but perhaps he is best known for his epoymous calls of "WHAT", "OKAY" and "YEEEAAAAHHH!" The More You Know™ There's nowhere I can't reach.

She Wants Revenge is a good band by the way, probably not your style Russ, but they're good.
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
She Wants Revenge is interesting. good music though.

The whole THE NOUN band thing is getting played out
The Bravery The Shins The New Pronographers The Killers The Thrills The White Stripes So on and so forth. I enjoy some THE NOUN band's music, while others try to slap it on to establish immediate semblence of indie cred. I was speaking idiomatically. |
Personally, I'm sick of "The (blank)s". I know that simplicity is often better, but I also seriously believe that all the good plurals have already been taken. What remains are the dregs that musicians from two decades ago knew better than to use.
The White Stripes The Killers The Hives The Eels The Vines The Strokes The Corrs The All-American Rejects The Trews In fact, the only "THE" band name that's still available and decent is "The Collective Nouns". I'd enjoy a group who had the self-effacing sense of humor to choose that one. Also, I am not liking this trend of "weirdo" names, ones that are obviously some contextual reference to something but make absolutely no sense to anyone not present when the band was formed. My Morning Jacket Death Cab for Cutie Kill Hannah My Chemical Romance Panic! At the Disco I wish they'd go back to having names that don't strive to be so allegorical. (And New Pornographers are a quality band despite their "THE NOUN" styled name.) What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

Angels and Airwaves Matchbook Romance Hawthorne Heights I just don't get it... FELIPE NO |
Fallout Boy is a reference to The Simpsons. There's really no true contextual meaning to their name, so the rumor goes. They hadn't chosen a permanent name and asked a crowd at a small show for suggestions. Someone yelled out "Fallout Boy!" and the rest is what you see and hear today.
I don't know if this is 100% accurate though. Just a rumor I read in a publication I don't specifically recall. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
I actually find some of those "scenester"/"indie" band names to be quite nice, although sometimes they just make no sense. For instance, Circle Takes the Square or The Number Twelve Looks Like You (although I think that was named after a Twilight Zone episode or something). I don't know why, but I just do. I WILL start a band called "Kecelakaan Jalan Raya" someday. I, for some reason, am in love with that name.
One of my biggest dislikes is metal bands that go for the total "lol let's go crazy kvlt!" bandnames -- Black Fucking Doom for instance. Or Necrosadistic Goat Torture. Or maybe even Timeless Necrotears. Essentially, overuse of "necr0" shit gets to me a lot. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
Not all The bands suck though, only the new generation.
The Fall The Stooges The Velvet Underground The Minutemen Are all amazing The bands. There's nowhere I can't reach. [ "Talisman" ] |
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |

I also hate all the bands you mentioned - though I've never listened to "Panic!". And let me ask this - but what the FUCK is an "Avenged Sevenfold"? I mean, was someone ripping pages out of a Thesaurus when it came to that name? All my friends love that band (I find most post-grunge bands to be completely awful) and I fucking hate them. Why can't we all go back and listen to Depeche Mode or The Cars? I was speaking idiomatically. |
The problem with shitty names boils down to the fact that any bunch of schmucks can throw together a band a take up a decent name. Have this happen for a good 4 decades or so and this is what you end up with.
What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
Good Chocobo |
My Chemical Romance comes from a book about drug addiction. Avenged Sevenfold sucks infinite amounts of balls. Band names don't really bother me though, if I like the music, the name doesn't really matter (although the best band name is Bear vs Shark). FELIPE NO |

Whenever an odd phrase or set of words pops up in Dave Barry's writing, he always stops and says "wouldn't that be a great name for a band?" I think that's the way most of these band names get made; somebody just says "hey, wouldn't it be cool if we called ourselves...?"
Since I'm not the biggest fan of mainstream music, I find most non-descriptive band names to be annoying, since 9 times out of 10 they tell you nothing about the band, the genre, or anything else. Remember when all bands used to have names that followed the convention "Name and the Verbers?" Oh, and the best name Dave Barry ever came up with was actually in Noun Noun Noun form. It was the name of a Japanese youth band: King Fucker Chicken. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
