Those didn't have to be temporary links, I uploaded the tracks to the voting directory yesterday afternoon/night/well it was some time yesterday anyway.

Additional Spam: Genso Sangokushi II Super Arrange Version - Continental Highway Really enjoyed the pastoral beginning to this song, and I wish it had continued in that vein; what comes after is fine, but a lot less sweeping and more standard. Still quite good all in all. Instant Remedy - Commando Interesting combo of SID-style effects and more modern synths. It gets high marks for creativity, but since I don't really like SIDtunes, that's about all it gets. RAINBOWS: Chris Hülsbeck Vol. 3 - Super Turrican II (Preview) The Jack Nicklaus of the SotW circuit returns with a typically above-par offering. Nice drive, good melody, and some endearingly old-fashioned synths make this a keeper and a strong contender to add another trophy to Huelsbeck's bulging SotW case. Super Robot Wars MX Original Soundtrack - Dancing Blue A nice combination of jazzy and synthy, this. Reminds me of some old, beloved original MIDIs that came with a Macworld CD; quite good. Technictix Remix Vol. 2 - shake marinade dance A pretty standard piece of electronica. The bleepy Mega Man inserts are nice at first, but they eventually wear out their welcome, as does the unintelligible vocalist. The New Tetris (Game Rip) - Africa Yikes, this sounds really awful, like it was recorded on cassette from the computer speakers and then transcoded to a 16kbps mp3. I was hoping for some great world music a la Baba Yetu to offset this, but there's only an annoyingly repetitive drum loop and rather poor vocals instead. Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Double Agent (Game Rip) - Main Theme Not the biggest fan of the Splinter Gear Solid songs that cropped up in the last BSC, so expectations were low. This song rises to the challenge, delivering a neat and intricate techno-thriller sound that's straight out of John Powell's Borne scores. You Have To Burn The Rope (Game Rip) - Now You're A Hero Seems like the entire game was an excuse to write this song! It's cute, I laughed, but I can't see myself ever listening to it again. Decent week. The Point Spread Dancing Blue - 2 pts. Main Theme - 2 pts. Continental Highway - 1 pt. Super Turrican II Preview - 1 pt. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Notes:
-- At some point I'm going to be tired of all these self-referential songs with lyrics talking about how you beat the game. I guess I haven't reached that point yet, though "Now You're A Hero," didn't place with me. -- I have a feeling "Africa" will get torn to pieces (should I have nominated the Toto version instead?). This isn't Baba Yetu (strike one), it's techno (strike two) and yes, the sound quality blows (strike three). If you're a Neil Voss fan, though, you're digging it -- the whole album is world music overlaid with techno beats, and if it isn't overly elaborate, it's certainly catchy. Whatever, I'm done defending now. (2 points) Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Double Agent (Game Rip) - Main Theme (2 points) The New Tetris (Game Rip) - Africa (1 point) RAINBOWS: Chris Hülsbeck Vol. 3 - Super Turrican II (Preview) (1 point) Super Robot Wars MX Original Soundtrack - Dancing Blue How ya doing, buddy? |

I still can't believe I haven't given the Genso Sangokushi soundtracks a proper listening to; I think I'd really like them based on the samples I've heard. Genso Sangokushi II Super Arrange Version - Continental Highway is my first foray into the super arrange soundtracks, and I've gotta say I'm mildly disappointed. The opening is wonderful, with its delicate, soothing pastoral melodies---but sadly I don't really care for the Asian-meets-orchestral-march style that persists for the rest of the track's duration. There are some nice melodic sparks and a couple of soaring developments but one the whole I didn't really care for this one.
I usually like the bubbly old-school synth found in Instant Remedy - Commando, but only when the composition itself packs a decent amount of drive and/or melodic creativity. This one doesn't do much for me at all. Far from engaging, and lacking any substantial hooks. *dusts of hands* Yes, I think that'll do. omg hülsbeck!` RAINBOWS: Chris Hülsbeck Vol. 3 - Super Turrican II (Preview) has some really cute, cheery melodies peppered throughout, and the style of synth hit a chord with me. Nothing at all oustanding about this one, but I'll definitely be saving it. A nice, carefree, no-strings-attached kind of listen. (I also can't believed I haven't listened to ANY Super Robot Wars stuff =.=") Super Robot Wars MX Original Soundtrack - Dancing Blue is just as solid as I thought it would be. Catchy without being overtly annoying, and it's got some really slick, agreeable instrument and synth choices. Could have done with a bit more depth, but it's solid nonetheless! I'm not a fan of the kind of electronica showcased in Technictix Remix Vol. 2 - shake marinade dance, specifically, techno with elements of vocals. Some of the beats were catchy, but on the whole I couldn't get into this one at all. So cliche and forced but I have to say it: The New Tetris (Game Rip) - Africa is odd. Sorry Chuckster, but I can't appreciate this one at all. Maybe a tiny bit for comedy appeal, but I don't think that was your intention! Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Double Agent (Game Rip) - Main Theme is OK considering the genre. Futuristic, dramatic orchestral stuff, I mean. It manages to keep me moderately interested in its 2-minute duration, so it must be doing something right. On paper for me, though, this one's merely average. Sorry "Africa", but You Have To Burn The Rope (Game Rip) - Now You're A Hero takes the cake for comedy appeal this week. It's a fairly memorable tune, too. Yeah, why not, I'll throw this one a point or two! (also like how this is the last track this week; it just works) you managed to beat the whole damn POINT! 2 points: RAINBOWS: Chris Hülsbeck Vol. 3 - Super Turrican II (Preview) 2 points: Super Robot Wars MX Original Soundtrack - Dancing Blue 2 points: You Have To Burn The Rope (Game Rip) - Now You're A Hero 4th: Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Double Agent (Game Rip) - Main Theme 5th: Genso Sangokushi II Super Arrange Version - Continental Highway 6th: Technictix Remix Vol. 2 - shake marinade dance 7th: The New Tetris (Game Rip) - Africa 8th: Instant Remedy - Commando I was really only impressed by two tracks this week. I knew I was in for a treat with the brass in the beginning, but it exceeded all expectations. shake marinade dance was one of my least favorite tracks off of Vol. 2 when I first listened to the album, but it's grown on me since. I'd still nominate several tracks before it, but I do rather like it now, especially the middle. There's nowhere I can't reach. |

Wow, "Commando" won? I thought it was totally forgettable. =/ "Dancing Blue"'s deserving, as is the bronze winner. Shocked that the Hülsbeck track didn't place though, I thought it was awesome. And, you know, ::hülsbeck::.

I think this might have been the first Hülstune not to place in living memory! But these folks like their SIDs, no doubt about it.

Too bad, but I think Dancing Blue have been appreciated enough
Gonna try to find new song after this for the next event What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
I'm genuinely surprised that "Continental Highway" did so poorly. It has all the earmarks of many past finishers. I suspect that the communal tastes of SotW voters have shifted in the past year, with a heavier favor toward quirkiness instead of epicness. The fact that "Now You're A Hero" took bronze is circumstancial evidence of that.
But I am glad that the proceedings didn't bend over for Huelsbeck. He's a phenomenal composer and his place amongst VGM's elite has been all but set into granite. Still, a Huelsbeck nomination shouldn't be a one-way trip to a gold medal, as has been the pattern until now. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
