Getting my ps2 games on my ps3 to look nice on a HDTV...

Yea i'm having a problem with it. Before I go further..I have the latest update from sony, and I made my display settings to 1080i on my TV. However when I play games such as Ace Combat 5, Final Fantasy XII...both of which have widescreen settings...both dont play that way. When I used my ps2 settings for the first time today, I was expecting the game to run in widescreen and have a decent look at least, but the black side bars appeared instead, and when I went into "other settings" to make it fullscreen, it stretched the screen and it didnt look good at all, but it was as if the image was stretched.

Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to set it up different in my ps3 settings?

Hopefully someone can help, and if I didnt explain it right, i'm sorry.

Jam it back in, in the dark.
