I think "Shutting down the internet" is a little over-dramatic. "Shutdown network hardware in the US and deny Americans access to the internet" might be a shade more realistic.
I think this whole thing seems like a knee-jerk reaction and a temporary solution to a permanent problem. A better bet would be to invest in more robust cyber-security for critical systems but that'd be a lot harder than passing some ill thought out legislation like has been drafted. To be fair though, it'd have to be one fuck of an emergency for the President to use those powers and one would imagine that in a situation that dire, surfing the web might well drop down your priority list a couple of spots. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
