Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day! and Big Brain Academy

So these are two of the popular "brain games" from Japan that are coming to America. Brain Age is out as of this week, and Big Brain Academy is set to come out next month.

What are your thoughts on these games? Nintendo says they are targeting these games more at your average joe than regular gamers, so that turn you off from playing it? Do you think it just looks stupid regardless of who they're aiming it at? Does the concept seem interesting to you? Have you played them, and if so what is your opinion of them?

I just got Brain Age yesterday, and I must say that this is a pretty good game (or non-game, as some people are calling it, just like Nintendogs and Electroplankton). It's just little diversions that supposedly help keep your brain sharp, so there's no harm in that. And at $20, that's not such a bad deal.

I even got my sister (a gamer) and my mom (a non-gamer) to play it as well, and they both enjoyed it a lot. My sister liked playing against me in the multiplayer, and she also learned how to play sudoku (she had never been interested before) because of this game. My mom liked the different games, but she especially liked the sudoku. She already plays it all the time on paper, but now she likes this version even more.

Because this game turned out better than I expected, I'm definitely gonna be getting Big Brain Academy when that comes out, and probably any other "brain" games Nintendo decides to bring over here. As long as they keep being fun, cheap, and fresh, I don't see why these games couldn't continue for a long while.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Yeah, it's a fun diversion. I like how it records your progress over time in a graph form and you can compare to the other people on the same card.

The only downside is that my brain age went from 43 to 24 to 24 to 20 in four days.

I think I won. Heh. The only reason for the 43 was bad voice recognition on the word "blue" anyhow. That's why I always select "I can't speak" during the exam.

I was planning to get this game, but $20 USD usually translates to $30 CDN, but I'll have to check that out at the store.

I feel like there's not going to be much replay value if I'm obsessing with completing the puzzles. I probably couldn't play in only short bursts each day, and I'm not a gigantic fan of sudoku.

I do like the innovation such as holding the ds in book format and the button-less controls.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

They're actually $25 CDN... you apparently don't know how to convert things properly. A dollar US is not $1.50 CDN...

Anyhow, my bro has been bugging me to get this for him as an "early Bday present". The game just looks odd, I mean, it's not really a game. Sudoku is fun though.

The blue screwed me over too, and I ended up with 57 for a starting age and jumped RIGHT to 20. Guess my mind is already working like it's supposed to =)

Yeah, the mic is sensitive, :/

Anyway, I love it. $20 is more than worth it. I haven't played in the past two days, though. I've been busy. Anyway, my current age is in the high 30s. I suck at the "count the heads" game. Urgh.

I also want to get Big Brain Academy. It looks amazing.

Yeah, got it the same day this mofo did.

Due to my lack of memorization skills and a crappy mike, my brain age went from 20 to 26 to 42 in three days.

I haven't checked it recently, because i've been to busy playing Monster Rancher Advance 2. But, i'll probably check on it tonight.

Does anyone use the Select button menu to choose their brain age activities or do you keep it random?

The word memory one screws me... I don't know how to do it. I write the words in and can't figure out how to submit it or whatever... so I select.

All you have to do is write one letter in each box. I have no problem doing that, but it screws me over because it can't understand my letters sometimes. I wish they had an option so you can just erase one letter instead of the whole word.

I got the game yesterday, and I just tried learning how to play Sudoku.
One thing that irks me is how if you play at night the giant head will sneeze and bitch and moan and say how you should go to bed.

So has anyone gotten Big Brain Academy yet? I haven't played it yet, but I hear that people like this one more than Brain Age, especially in regards to the multiplayer. So anybody have any thoughts or opinions about it?

The most difficult thing about this game is trying to say "black" and it actually acknowledge your voice.

I'm having problems with the word "blue" mostly, although I managed to figure out a way to say it so that it gets recognized. But yeah, that totally messes up my score, I ended up with like a brain age in the 60s.

This game is neat though, I'm sure my mom would love it. Just normal non-gamers would probably be interested in seeing what their brain age is. I think I might bring it into work

That's probably your New Zealand accent. BLECK! Say the A. The one I have trouble with is the Yellow. 3 or 4 times each time I do the colour test it doesn't pick up my yellow when it's yellow, so the result ends up bullshit. Good thing there's other tests I can track my progress by, I like looking at the graphs.

For those who have problems with the game's word recognition during its memorization test, write the words in capital letters, problem solved.

Yeah, that's because you say Yallow.

The accents aren't the problem, I think. I think it's just the recognition of syllibles itself. For example, in Phoenix Wright, you can get away with saying "on - e - chan" as a replacement of "objection."

I finally got around to playing Big Brain Academy today, and I must say that I like this game more than Brain Age. The activities are just more fun in this game, and the multiplayer doesn't even compare to the lousy one in Brain Age. If you have Brain Age, get this game anyway, and if you don't have either, you should probably just get this one.

And I don't know about the rest of you Brain Age owners, but the only thing I basically use my copy for is to play sudoku.

I got my Brain Age up to 20 for a day, but now it's down to 24. I've just started getting good at Sudoku, there's tons of them! Considering this mode was only added as an after thought. I get so pissed off when I think i've finished one and it appears that I got something wrong somewhere though. < EDIT: In sudoku

Hold down the select button on your ds, then press brain training and you can pick what tests you want to do.

so far...

Brain Age is more towards mathematics to me... however I can feel that it actually helps my concentration. Especially sudoku.

Big Brain Academy however doesn't really bring me closer than Brain Age. However it scored better on multiplayer options than Brain Age which only have 1 game to play multiplayer: Calculation x30.

I've been training for over 2 weeks now and I'm hooked. Should've gotten to it earlier I think, it really does help with my uni studies! I've gotten 20 twice now, 2nd time was when I couldn't speak (first time) - it seems much easier to ace it that way; I think the criteria for speaking games are tough - it's very difficult to read passages that fast! My faves so far are the word memorisation and low to high - both have seem great improvement too

I do hope the 2nd iteration gets localised soon! The problems seem much more difficult and varied and really gets your brain working in more than just the prefrontal cortex (probably not realistically speaking). There's also a piano-based sight-reading activity! Gosh that just proves that music helps build a sound mind eh? Non-games. They really are fun!
