The Gamingforce Game of the Year 2010: RESULTS - The Top, er, 11

The voting is done with for another year, and once again it was a disappointingly small number of people who actually came out to vote, so for another year rather than a top 20 I'm keeping it to just the top 10. The list runs in reverse order, so if you're highly impatient and just want to know what claimed the top spot, then leap on down to the bottom. But have a read through, see what games ended up where and then have your say on the list.

So, what made it into the Gamingforce Game of the Year Top 10, well let's start with number 10 shall we, and like 2009 our first tied position:

10-. Limbo
[ XBLA | Playdead Studios ]

---------------------------

10-. Donkey Kong Country Returns
[ Wii | Retro Studios ]

---------------------------

9. Miles Edgeworth: Ace Attorney Investigations
[ NDS | Capcom ]

---------------------------

8. Heavy Rain
[ PS3 | Quantic Dream ]

---------------------------

6-. Super Mario Galaxy 2
[ Wii | Nintendo ]

---------------------------

6-. Red Dead Redemption
[ Multi | Rockstar San Diego ]

---------------------------

5. Vanquish
[ Multi | Platinum Games ]

---------------------------

4. Halo: Reach
[ 360 | Bungie ]

---------------------------

3. Bayonetta
[ Multi | Platinum Games ]

---------------------------

2. VVVVVV
[ PC | Terry Cavanagh ]

---------------------------

1. Mass Effect 2
[ Multi | BioWare ]

---------------------------

So there you have it, the Gamingforce Game of the Year 2010 Top 10. So what should have been there, what shouldn't have? What was too high, and what was too low? Start the discussion/bitching...

Thanks to everyone who took part in the voting stage. I said this last year I guess, but not sure I'll be doing this again next year, we'll see.

How ya doing, buddy?

ME2's spot seems to echo everything everywhere else, and I guess that's not too surprising. It was far superior to the first one and quite good, but I was totally hoping for VVVVVV or Vanquish to take spot the first.

Platinum seems to be developer of the forever though, horray <3333

I really should get around to playing Mass Effect 2. I really didn't like the first one but everyone tells me that the sequel is nothing like the original.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I bought ME2 last week primarily on the strength of this poll so the event's not a complete waste of time.

Technically that's a top 11 too by the way.

It's more for the story on the first one, the gameplay for the second game.

The controls just feel so much better in ME2.

I was speaking idiomatically.

The planet scanning is boring, but everything else is handled very well on the second one. But yeah, the story just wanders off as it progresses. Still love it though.

Plus, I fucking love Biotic Charge.

Fuck yeah ME2 and Platinum games. Much love for Bayonetta and Vanquish.

Play Mass Effect 2. Barring that, play the first one first.

Do 5 runsof the first game, start with ME2, do 3 runs then come back here with your findings. Best of luck.

Hmm...interesting list.

Mass Effect 2 deserved #1, no question about it. Even thought it came out Q1 it remained the best of 2010 by a mile. No other game came even close to it.

But...where is Starcraft 2? Civilization V, Assassins Creed: Brotherhood, Just Cause 2. I guess I have no right to even complain about it, but this is really surprising. Not a single one of them even showed up.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Well, did you vote? :P

In all seriousness, there's not much of a contingent of strategy game players here, so those games aren't likely to make the list.

I can't speak for everyone, but I know AC:Brotherhood has been getting general consensus of "It feels like AC 2.5 / This could've been DLC" and Just Cause 2, while fun as hell to play, was almost too big for its own good. Had it tightened up the world a little bit and focused on more satisfying combat or a non-shitty story, it might've been received better.

The fact that Starcraft 2 and Civ 5 only came out on PC didnt do them any favors, that's for sure. It's sadly just a fact that PC games will never be as popular as console games in the current day and age.

Still, Starcraft 2 is pretty impressive. I was one of those that was almost sure it would suck but the single player alone impressed the hell out of me. It has like what, 30 missions? and each one is unique in its own way, the way you can interact after every mission. It was great, well was well worth the wait.

I could agree with what you are saying about AC: Brotherhood, however, if that were the case Super Mario Galaxy 2 wouldnt be here either, I mean lets be honest here. I wouldnt go as far as saying it could have gone as DLC. It's actually pretty big, and the multiplayer was a nice touch too.

Just Cause 2, that one doesnt surprise me perse. It's just overshadowed by the bigger releases. Definitely the biggest sandbox game I ever played, though. It really is too big for it's own good.

I'll try to be on the bandwagon next year. Just remember, Mass Effect 3 and Elder Scrolls: Skyrim will be #1 and #2 respectively.

PC games never as popular as console games, really? Man, guess someone forgot to tell Starcraft 2 (has reportedly sold 4.5 million so far) and World of Warcraft Cataclysm (sold something like 4.5 million in the first 24 hours of release). Sure these numbers aren't necessarily up there with something like Call of Duty, but then nothing is up there with Call of Duty at the moment.

Thing is, anyone playing those games isn't likely to lift their heads out of the sand long enough to chime in on something like this. Or if the are posting on a forum, it's most likely specific to the game they play. Engrossing games are engrossing.

Oh come on, 2 Blizzard games, one is a sequel people have been waiting for for over 10 years, the other is a MMORPG, which has had a monopoly for over 5 years. The fact that they are both from Blizzard isnt a coincidence either. Blizzard knows how to make good games so no surprise that they sell well. They are a pretty big exception though. Generally PC games don't do nearly as well as on consoles.

Pretty sure Starcraft 2 was one of the games you questioned the lack of appearance of in this top 10, so yeah I will cite Blizzard games. You can't very well stand there and suggest these games didn't make it into the list because of lack of sales and then moan when I point out that, actually, some of the games you mention did actually sell very well.

Starcraft 2 had a very.... unexpected... storyline, so eh. Maybe that's why it wasn't nominated and/or voted on!

I must admit the missions were more varied than the "destroy enemy base and units" missions we got in the original.

It seems like sales do not equal GFF popularity anyhoo.

I don't own a monocle just yet, but I would have probably played the hell out of it if I would have had any kind of certainty that it could run on my machine. My video card not appearing in the list of supported hardware for the mac version kind of made me hesitate on spending 60 bucks on it.

And as far as Starcraft II goes, I would have been the kind to put a lot of points behind it if I had played enough games that came out in 2010 to have more than two games on the list.

The list does contain most other games that I was curious about in 2010 and hope to play eventually. Maybe this year I'll actually have a chance to play enough new games to participate in next year's voting.
