Mushihimesama Futari & ESPGaluda II - More deaths per minute than World War II

SHMUP Fans Rejoice! Finally CAVE is giving us a region free SHMUP game for the 360!

Quote:
Cave general manager Makato Asada has plans to bring the company's frantic shoot-em-ups to a larger audience, one that spans beyond Japanese arcades and a few import enthusiasts. Maybe even to your PC.

While Cave's releases, titles like DoDonPachi, Mushihime-sama and Death Smiles, are readily available in Japan, getting your hands on them in the West isn't always easy. You'd typically need a Japanese PlayStation 2 or Xbox 360 to play them. But that's going to change, first with the region-free release of Mushihime-sama Futari for the Xbox 360 this November.

Asada told Kotaku in an interview that Cave is looking at global releases of its games, full-fledged Xbox Live Arcade titles of certain titles and Valve's Steam service as a means of distribution. None of that is set in stone, mind you, but Asada sounded upbeat about Cave's new opportunities.

"We don't know anything at this point with regards to Xbox Live Arcade," Asada clarified, "but we can say that the person in charge of these ports at Cave and the person in charge of XBLA authorizations for the United States met today on the TGS floor. It depends on where those discussions go in regard to Guwange on XBLA."

Guwange, for those who don't know, is a 1999 shooter with a traditional Japanese theme. It was the Cave game that readers of the company's blog chose as the title they'd like to see come to Xbox Live Arcade.

But before Guwange or any other XBLA ports arrive, Cave has some more disc-based titles planned.

"Right now, we're working on a few titles for localization," Asada said. Again, take caution. "This is currently all in talks. With regards to Death Smiles, we can say that it's currently in progress and hopefully soon we'll be able to give overseas users news about its release."

Asada also hinted at something unannounced, something not based on its previous releases. And something designed with a more global audience in mind.

"Right now at Cave we're working on a new title, and we want it to be worldwide," Asada said. "It's going to have to sell to a worldwide audience, so there might be a possibility that we would tailor it [to Western tastes] in that sense."

Does that mean no insect queens or gothic lolita girls? Well, not exactly.

"If we lost that, we would sort of lose what makes us Cave, so we'll have to keep that," Asada said.

What else does Cave have in its future? Despite Asada's personal preference for playing first-person shooters like Quake, Counter-strike, Halo, and Call of Duty 4 online, the company has no plans to enter that market.

But it's not opposed to venturing into totally new genres.

"Capcom Vs. Cave would be a pretty interesting fighting game," Asada said.

I'm guessing they're going to need to sell a few more copies of Death Smiles before that happens. But, hey, Capcom asked.

So you SHMUP fans know what to do. Import this beast for your 360. Go go go!

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Oh god it's so expensive to import but fuck I'm going to do it anyway.

Cup ramen for a week!

Cool news about wanting to port stuff to PC, though. And bringing Death Smiles over would be awesome, too.

Preordered the LE through NCSX like a million years ago.

Knowing my luck it's gonna be LOOOOOOOOL LOOK WE GOT LESS like the whole deathsmiles thing, and then I'm gonna not get the 1.01 DLC or the arrange soundtrack,

Preorders sold super quick at yes-asia and at P-A though. BAD OMEN FOR ME, because NCSX has a history of overselling, so here's hoping.

I've heard this mentioned, actually.

Is it true region free or is it NTSC region free, and ignore PAL?

The only reason I ask is because there are more than one "region free" title on circlebox that doesn't work in Euroland.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Yeah, that's the thing since no one knows before it's tested. I can see Americans saying "region free!" so long as it works in their region, even if it was just NTSC-U.

FINALLY got it in, had to pay like 15 bucks import taxes on it, but worth it dammit. The game runs on the EU system thankfully (as I'm sure you all already know by now). I really like that Cave even put the downloadable content into the EU (and presumably US) marketplaces, since you can't actually buy the JP ones unless you have JP gamerpoints or a JP creditcard. That really shows that they care (and it's kinda cute how it says "Black Lavel" ).

But for now I'm satisfied with just the 1.5 and arrange modes. I really love how well-balanced this game is though--I played through all the novice modes, and they start out really, really easy, but by the time you're playing Ultra you're doing some pretty advanced stuff already. It really eases you into it though. Then when you go on to Arrange or Arcade, it's actually a pretty smooth difficulty transition. Still suffering pretty badly on harder modes though.

Oh also the level 2 song is just too awesome. (Also, color manual! Shrink wrap with the little ribbon thing that makes it easy to open! Music CD! )

Yeah, I can 1CC Arrange-Novice, Ultra isn't even that bad in there, but by this point my performance in 1.5-Arcade is pretty abysmal, for all three types. Stage 3 punches me in the gob hard enough to end most survival runs, scoring runs tend to make it about boss 2 before I mess up trying to maximize amber drops.

Maniac is fucking AWESOME THOUGH. I really like this score mechanic.

Also I'll consider myself ok at 1.5-Arcade-Ultra if I can 1CC stage 1, christ

Wait.

Let me get this straight, exactly.

Mushi is set to be region free to test the import waters, to see if there's enough reason to localize.

Even with region free to boost sales by a couple thousand, it sells significantly worse overall than just deathsmiles did in Japan, or even Otomedius G...and despite all that crap they bring it out anyway?

God damn, that is awesome. I thought after Mushi's numbers it wouldn't have happened.

I think Gamingforce's extreme bandwidth has killed Siliconera, the link won't load for me. What I want to know: Will there be a PAL release and/or is it region free! It's already pretty much awesome that it's coming out in the US at all though.

SO! Kotaku (el oh el) says EspGaluda II will be region free, but only the standard version.

Quote:
“The Limited Edition of EspGaluda II will be region-locked to Japan because we didn’t have enough time to get the application in before pressing,” says Cave producer Makoto Asada. “However, we were able to make the standard edition region-free in to show our appreciation for the support we have from overseas fans.”

About time some news on this came up.

Put in an order but I'm going to expect it to show up and not work, I trust Kotaku about as far as I can throw Sass, especially a blurb they write that's entirely unsourced.

At least I know the soundtrack's good, and that an 80 dollar VGM disc might be the end result of this.

EDIT:

NCSX has confirmed this via another source (their distributors), and since they are not full of fucking shit like the big K is, this is now trustworthy. Yay.

And it's shipping early. Even better.

NCSX has gotten their Galuda II copies slightly ahead of schedule and they should be out in the mail two days early. Good news for overnighters, they might have it by Friday.
