[REDBOOK] CD-ROMs - Stick 'em in your CD Player!

Updating the unofficial GFF list of CD-ROMs with redbook soundtracks. The following games record most of their music as CDDA data, meaning that most CD players will play the music right off the CDs (provided you don't select the first track).

The first entry in the game title; the second entry is the platform, if multiple versions of the game exist.

I have delibrately left off CD-ROMs with very few (or insignificant) audio tracks. Games with musicless tracks or songs with heavy dialogue overdubbing will be discouraged.

As always, this list is in need of contributions and corrections.

The list is tab-delimited, so you should be able to cut and paste it into a text editor. Most spreadsheet programs can open tab-delimited text files.

Incredible Machine 2, Panzer Dragoon PC, and Battle Chess CD-ROM Enhanced have Redbook.

Also, Little Big Adventure is listed a second time as Relentless: Twinsen's Adventure. I don't know which title you prefer to keep, but they're both the same game.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

I'm surprised by the lack of "Castlevania: Symphony of the Night".

Also, "Rogue Trip: Vacation 2012".

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

In addition to Battlezone 2, the "original" Battlezone for PC has Redbook audio as well. The early Cyan games "Cosmic Osmo and the Worlds Beyond the Mackerel" and "The Manhole" (at least the Materpiece Edition) have it too, as do "Marathon," "Marathon 2," and "Marathon Infinity" for the Mac.

You can also add Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV (PlayStation) to the list. The music is the same as those found on the Sangokushi IV - Cyber Electric Version soundtrack. Also, I have discovered that the PC version of Sangokushi V (Korean Version) also has redbook audio.

Does that one really count? -_o It's just Alucard complaining at you, then one song.

Although if you're going to count easter egg tracks, Lunar 2: Eternal Blue (Sega CD) has three tracks as well. Also, Lunar the Silver Star (Sega CD) is duplicated on the list, unless you're counting the American and Japanese versions separately.

Add Silhouette Mirage (PSX) to the list. The Saturn version may be Redbook, too.

I used to own Cobra Command for the Sega CD and while it had Redbook, it wasn't music. IIRC, it was the logo and what sounded like a recorded message played backwards. Might have been Road Avenger that had the message and there might have been more than a single version of the games, but neither of them had really any sort of worthwhile tracks, well, at least on the original US versions at least...

A Bummer too, some damn good music. Anyone have an actual gamerip?

Brigandine: The Legend of Forsena [PSX] qualifies. Not all the tracks that are used in the game can be played as a CD, though. I don't know how common that is.

I'm confused. What's the point of this list? I thought Red Book was just a standard that many audio CDs just follows.

Redbook audio is a fancy way of saying "Video games that use CD audio tracks off their own discs to store their music". For those looking to rip the audio of certain games, it's a handy guide to know which ones essentially have an easy button. Much better to rip the actual CD tracks than to record via line-in or something, after all.

What systems? I believe it was a PSX game, but does a potential PC version have CD music tracks?

Well, other than the PSX version there was only a Sega Saturn version IIRC. Though, the PSX has a bonus audio track...

Great reference! :-D

U might also wanted to add "Raiden" (the popular shooting game) PC version since it has great - arranged BGM tracks not found at any version of "Raiden" besides PC version.

The version I cited was the PSX disc. It's Redbook inasmuch as it has the infamous "Playstation black disc" line and a remix of what I think is Bloody Tears. But that track isn't available any other way, so I think it counts as Redbook.

I've never come across any PC versions to know about the available tracks on those.

Hey, add Puzzle Fighter PSX and Tactics Ogre in your list. they also contain redbook audio tracks actually.

You all think you got good deals, huh? Ha! You frugal and observant shoppers have more to learn.

None of that approaches this:
*censored for sake of signature size*
The Mr. Methane CD, purchased over ebay for .01ยข. Yeah, free shipping. This guy performs all sorts of neat stuff, including the doot doot, doot doot from the Blue Danube.

Allow me to share a track from this CD. Here ya go.
I think he should have paid you .01ยข instead.

Kings Quest 5 PC and Cliffhanger Sega CD were both redbook audios I listened to quite a bit back in the day. The Cliffhanger music was straight from the movie so you got a game and the movie soundtrack in a single purchase.

I scratched Tactics Ogre off the list, since there are only, like, 3 tracks on the thing. Blaster Master: Blasting Again and Castlevania: SotN have the same "feature".

I may add these "fringe cases" back to the list, though. I just wanted to focus on games with most of their soundtrack in Redbook format. Games with a bonus track or two wouldn't be worth it, really

Unless gamers, such as yours truly, wouldn't have even thought to try those discs without reading this post. I'd request that you make a separate section for games with only limited or extra redbook audio.

I was speaking idiomatically.

First of all, sorry for my terrible english!

Sometimes i buy old games from ebay just for the redbook music, I'm not even interested in the game. So a list like this is very useful to me, I'm glad I finally found it.

Anyway, I have a few PC games (with redbook tracks), that are missing from the list:

Archimedean Dynasty - 4 tracks
EF2000 (Eurofighter 2000) - 6 tracks
Incubation - 19
Noctropolis - 10
Rally Masters - 4
Revenant - 12
Sega Rally 2 - 13
Shattered Steel - 12 tracks - I'm listening to this right now, very cool symphonic soundtrack
Sub Culture - 11 tracks
TFX (Tactical Fighter Experiment) - 14 tracks - awesome music from the veteran VGM composer, Barry Leitch!

I don't have these, but I know they have redbook audio:

Whale's Voyage 2 - PC
Star General - PC
Dreams To Reality - PC
Battle Isle 2 / Battle Isle Platinum - PC
Descent - Mac
Renegade-Battle for Jacob's Star - PC

Dungeon Master - FM Towns
Dungeon Master 2 - FM Towns

Also spotted some duplicates on the list:

Might & Magic 9
Machwarrior 2 Mercenaries
Forsaken
Vay Sega CD

These two games are on the list, but my original CDs have no redbook tracks:

Need For Speed PC
Homeworld PC

Also, I have an idea how someone with a lot of spare time (not me ) can make this list more complete:

Some of you probably know Secret Squirrel from the Slightly Dark Forums.
You can download his VGM lists from here:

ww.slightlydark.com/secretsquirrel/Secret Squirrels Lists.zip

(Sorry, I don't have enough posts to put proper URLs here, so just put a third "w" in the above URL)

There is a lot of stuff there (PC, Fm-Towns, etc.), that's missing from this list. Just do a search for "Redbook" in the big html file, and you'll see.

Bye

You, my friend, are why the list was compiled. I bought several used games for just such a purpose.

Secret Squirrel offered his list as a resource some time ago. His contribution is a major reason why this list is as big as it is.

Of course, as you note, his bigass list gets updated, oh, every week or so

I already scratched a number of his games from my list, though. As stated, I couldn't fathom adding dozens of games with minimal redbook tracks (Road Avenger, Castlevania: SotN, etc.)

Also, I'm on library time, now, so I'll have to update this list when I get back home.

Here's a couple:

Darkstalkers - The Night Warriors PS1
Flying Carpet (PS1 - not that great anyway)
Masters of Teras Kasi PS1
Ogre Battle PS1 (4 tracks, so don't know if that counts - Tactics has 2 tracks; I believe all these tracks were used in the Ogre remix CD)
Scrabble Complete PC
Tunnel B1 (PS1 - can't verify if Saturn version has it)
Vanark PS1

I've got a MUCH larger list of files that I have NOT verified. It seems to me though that they definitely use Redbook audio, but the versions I have are not in high-quality bitrate. Needless to say, it seems a lot of Neo Geo and TG-16 games used Redbook.

I've also got the game Sinistar: Unleashed that has a bunch of MP3 files in the music folder. While I don't think you can actually rip them off the CD, this is the next best thing, no?

Oh yeah, the SotN remix track is Dracula's Castle. Good stuff.

I don't know if you also want to indicate games that have digital audio formats on them (XA, for instance) as these can easily be ripped and played through plugins. It's a bit more difficult to extract PS1 audio data as you need something like PSM Play to get them off (and for some reason, mine won't install properly any more). Sometimes though, you need to require a special plugin to play back the files - the SotN XA format, for example, requires a special player and a plugin that I finally dug up from a Japanese website, but sadly, it won't play the voice acting tracks correctly.

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?
