Mario Golf World Tour - Clubbin' all day

... one of the first new threads GFF has seen in a long time probably deserves a more exciting OP, but i'm too lazy right now.

Is anyone else playing this at all? I was thinking about setting up a GFF tournament and putting the code up here but i don't know whether anyone even has the game.

I'm having a lot of fun with it, but i've found myself in the right kind of mood. Only 3 full-length non-gimmicky courses without DLC is a little disappointing, but i'm finding the online play to be a lot of fun.

I've never played one of these, was thinking about maybe renting it. I played some of the N64/GC Mario Tennis games and those were a lot of fun; obviously different sports but IIRC Camelot is responsible for both.

Mine's in the mail, actually.

Hoping the online isn't wrecked by broken Miis, but GAF seems convinced it won't be as broken as Tennis. Amazon is generally pretty good about shipping so I imagine I'll see it on Wednesday or something.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

AW hell no GFF, you ain't gonna make me buy a new 3DS game a day after I just bought one!

Anyway, I would like to be able to get this game so I can play with my internet pals. Maybe when it's on sale.

You don't have to buy the game if you don't want to, Vemp. It'll just be loads of fun that everyone else will be having without you.

I've created a tournament that lasts the week, the GFF Open. Unfortunately there's no way to limit the number of tries someone can take at playing a tournament, so i guess people can just try to get the best score they can until it ends at midnight a week from now.

Find the tournament using the code: 28-7805-7588-7163

How was the 3DS (?) Tennis one broken, do Miis have ridiculous stats compared to the regular cast or something? I'm familiar with the older games but haven't played any of the newer ones.

In 3DS Tennis and in Golf, Mii stats are determined by the costumes and costume parts you wear. There's no RPG like progression, it's based instead on this type of unlockable.

Tennis was INSANELY fucking broken with balance regarding this. There was no point to using any of the regular cast, star versions included, and only about three outfits were actually viable. As Tennis had an element of randomization in the costume drops, the online was a disaster after about 4 or 5 days.

It was so bad it was game ruining, actually.

Early reports from Golf is that nothing is THAT broken, but everyone seems to be using Miis anyway so I'm willing to bet they are at least somewhat superior. The question remains to be seen if they completely invalidate the normal characters or not.

Thus far, my Mii is, after a fair amount of playing, still a good deal weaker than most of the star characters. The only stat that really seems to matter is drive distance, since that determines what eagle possibilities are open to you. Sweet spot will change how forgiving the game is on the second button press of manual shots (and how far off auto shots might go), and control affects how much of a difference putting spin on the ball will make how forgiving your shot is when you miss the timing (low control means missing the second timing by even a little bit will send the shot way off).

Online live (as in Vs. mode, not tournaments) is pretty balanced, since winning requires you to be consistent. The online tournaments, on the other hand, let you try as many times as you want for the best score, so only people who have maxed out Miis and the willingness to sit and play the same course over and over until they have an eagle on every hole are ever going to win those. It's a little frustrating, to be honest.

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

I just experienced the worst thing ever: Got my first hole in one - and because i happened to be trying out speed golf at the time, the game didn't even care. So bitter.

As an actual golf game, how does this compare to the Tiger Woods series? Of those that I've played, 2010 was really good, 2004 was really good, 2006 was more or less the same as 2004 and 2009 was crap (Reducing your stats for having a duff round, something that happens a lot when you only ever play it drunk and stoned as every single Tiger Woods player ever does).

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Not sure, never played those. In terms of challenge, it's probably not the same - timings are relatively forgiving, "easy" swing mode makes it impossible to actually duff a shot (though you can still mess it up, you can't just blow it off to the side entirely), and the greens are super easy to read thanks to the putting grid. Stats aren't really a thing - your Mii can improve, but for the most part good shotmaking can make up for a weaker character pretty easily (it takes a pretty significant difference to offer a significant enough difference that you feel legitimately underpowered).

Not sure what else to tell you on it though.

Wow, turns out those large scale tournaments are a pretty good way to make some cash if you can do well - just scored 16000 coins for finishing 117th in the NA Point Tournament. Early indications are that the near-pin contest will not be a repeat of that performance, though.

Also, SuperSonic and I are still the only two who have posted a round for the GFF Open, so there's still a spot on the podium for whoever wants it! ..It's a little depressing having a tournament with only two people

And that's why I stopped shopping new video game releases from Amazon. Wind Waker HD was to be released on a Friday so it should've been at my house then but instead it came in on Monday. Oh yeah, it still came but my point is I could've been playing it that weekend.

They also started taxing my state this past summer since there's a facility there now, so no point...switched to Gamestop which is less than 10 minutes away.

So the tournament ends on Saturday? I only did one entry.

How ya doing, buddy?

I only played one round too (though it was a good one). The thing with this format is that it lets people just keep playing until they get a perfect game, so if you want to improve your score you can keep playing the tournament over and over.

So i've been a little busy and distracted this week, but the second round of the GFF Circuit is now open - the Coupler Cup. The tournament lasts until midnight Sunday night again, because if it takes more than four days for you losers to throw together 18 holes then forget it, you're worse than Game Night. This is not a statement i make lightly.

Code is 36-6790-2082-8965.

In other news, dropped a -20 round into World Tournament 1 this evening - still only good enough for me to place around 300th. Looking forward to spending that mad bank on mulligans, then finally trying that stupid one-on, one-putt 18 hole ridiculousness again.

Came here to see if there was anyone else playing Mario Golf, and if anyone else had thought to set up a GFF Tournament. Learn that yes, someone has and that they are also clearly better than me (-20, damn son).

That said, since that tourney is done I decided to initiate the first tourney on the GFF Euro-circuit. So hit the code below to take on "Flaming Hogans" (runs until 31/05):

05-7853-2113-1977

I'm super down for the idea of a GFF Circuits so let's make more of these happen all over the place.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Menno is a monster. I only beat him at the coin tourney, but he's been placing far better than me everywhere else.

The first two tournaments i set up were played only by myself and SuperSonic, so i had given up on them - glad to see i was wrong.

Also, mulligans are useless when you're clicking through the obvious failure of a shot too fast and skip the part where you can actually use them. 14th hole of birdie challenge, wasted.

I've only just recently started playing the game (it sat on the shelf whilst I finished some other stuff) and also forgot to check the forum to see if a MG thread had been created. I think a few other GFFers are picking the game up (potentially shade, Mo0, nutty) so hopefully we can get a number of tournaments going, as well as playing online when we're about at the same time.

Picked this up on release day a while back.

Just got to some of the unlockable courses as far as challenges go. Some of them are legitimately dumb though. Would love to partake in a tournament with you guys if one is made.

One has been made, see the code up above. If anyone else makes a GFF tourney then make it code locked and stick the code in here and we can compete our little hearts out.

Round 1 on the GFF Euro-circuit has concluded with (unsurprisingly) Menno taking the win.

Next round on the circuit is up:

EDIT: It's a week long tourney again.
