Parents, Anime, and you!

After a little chat with my friend....I thought why not bring back this thread. I did a search and found nothing....So hopefuly...no one posted it before. Anyway....what do your parents or imeditate family members think of anime? Do they think it's all animated porn, bad for your health, just a hobby, or what?

Personaly my parents don't mind....even though they split up, they still don't mind. My mom lets me watch whatever I want unless its really, really exsplisit (not that I watch that stuff anyway), and likes some of the series...and my dad was into Akira so he doesn't mind. All and all they don't care really.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I started reading Ranma 1/2 back when I was in 6th grade when Viz first started distributing it. Had a few shots of female Ranma as well as Akane topless at scenes. They saw this and made a slight mention of it to me that they were a little risque. Still, I got the books. I had a weird phase where I wanted them to listen to JPOP which, looking back now, was very embarassing ;__; So. Ever since about Sophomore year of high school, I've been very secretive about it. Around Senior year of high school, I started downloading almost all the manga/anime I take in. So it went from a ridiculously expensive hobby to one of little-to-no-cost. Blade of the Immortal is the only graphic novel I still buy these days.

And if Gunsmith Cats sequel series gets released here, I might do the same. I have much respect for Darkhorse. Can't say as much for SOME companies **eyes Viz**.

Anyhow, they don't even know about my continuing love of anime. They probably think it was a phase that has left. I'm still carrying it through though~

There's nowhere I can't reach.

I guess this sorta runs in the family but back in the days, My father loved watching Astro Boy. When he encountered me watching Akira (an old tape and one of the first few animes i started to watch), he always told me to be an artist and go to college to increase my skills. My mother doesn't mind at all. She also thinks i should just continue to draw and what not but she sees me more on the computer and would rather have me do art in the computer. So pretty much, when I watch anime, read manga, or do something interesting in photoshop that would have a anime character in the front..It all connects to college(not this year) and what not. In short, they dont mind whatever i watch. They did see a lil bit of Cowboy Bebop and said "Wtf" when they saw Faye Valentine's clothes XD.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

My family has just a generic disdain for pretty much all anime and manga. Naturally, they all got their opinions about what anime is like through pokemon, since it is, after all, THE authoritative source for information on anime. ;_;

Also, a lot of my friends hold to the same opinion. And, because they had already decided all anime is shit even before getting a fair sampling, every time I try to expose them to any bit of anime, they all hate it anyways.

Unfortunately, it doesn't help that there are true otakus amongst some of my friends groups, and they don't do any justice to Japanese culture either, with their inferior grooming habits, awkward speech characteristics, and pathetic senses of humor.

My parents don't care, as long as I keep it to myself and they don't see me watching it a lot. They really have this problem where if they see me watching anime a couple instances in a row, they'll automatically assume that I do nothing but watch it and that I'm completely obsessed with it. And that, of course, isn't true! It just so happens that, whenever I watch anime, they happen to be around. So, as long as I make sure that they won't see me watching anime whenever they happen to enter the room, they don't care.

In fact, my mom and dad were rather "intrigued" by Monster. I think they secretly enjoy anime, but aren't willing to admit it. They don't know about the Hentai...and other related things...but this isn't a problem, since that's not quite my cup of tea anyways. Actually, my mom did have a problem with Bleach, mentioning something about Death Gods, but she didn't say anything else.

And as a little sidenote, my friends generally hate anime--with a passion, and that's mostly because the only anime they were ever exposed to were Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh.

The people who do like it aren't within my close circle of friends, as they're mostly acquaintances that I'd probably never hang out with. I might also add that they're rather annoying. I mean, you don't have to recite fanart comics over and over, laughing each time like it was something completely new. "Ah hahaha! Shippo! Foxfire! BOOM!" "Ooooh, he's dead!" "Haha, he killed Naraku. Yadadadada." "HAHAH!" Rinse and repeat. Harh. They also drool over anything Cartoon Network puts in front of them, and that's about it. Ok, well, I guess I do know some decent anime fans in real life, but I'm starting to lose hope.

I was speaking idiomatically.

This was my exact relationship with my mother, why do parents assume so much?

Anyway, aside from that, my mother never cared what I watched at all, unless it was porn, at which point she'd go bananas if she even thought I was within one mile of porn. Kind of weird.

My parents never really had a problem with anime. In fact, my father got himself quite in Cowboy Bebop and Trigun. Although my father considers the manga I read (DearS and I's) softcore porn.

My mom never cared much. She knew I watched Pokemon, Dragonball Z, some of the animes shown on TV, anyway.

My dad on the other hand, well, he just put anything animated in one catagory; childish.

I got a lock put on my door about six months ago. At that time, I didn't have any wall scrolls. Now I have six wall scrolls, and a bunch of figures of various characters from anime and video games. She saw my room about a week ago and later asked what was with all the "naked women" in my room. (I almost replied with, "What!? Naked women!? This never happens! I wanna see!")

My mom seems to think all anime/manga is soft porn, and my dad probably thinks that just what I watch and read of it is. Of course, I do own some H, but they don't know that. My dad watched a bit of Spirited Away and told me it was stupid. He probably won't touch any other anime again just because he didn't like the thirty-or-so minutes he watched.

Because everything manga-style is the same. Right? (o.O)

My father actually watches anime. I think the last two were Ghost in the Shell (huge fan of the series) and Maburaho. He also thinks Hentai is the weirdest/funniest thing ever and got a few laughs out of it when he asked me what it was.

Fjodor: That's sad man. More people should at least try to be open to it. Don't have to love it but damn.

Really now, my parents don't care what I watch (okay, if they see some animated porn, then ?_? is gonna happen), but usually as long as I'm done my chores and homework or whatever for the day. Usually it's chores they bug me about. I don't know what they think of anime, but most likely they'll think it's naive watching material. Hey, personally I think it's better than most of the shit I see on TV nowadays.

My family doesn't like anime or cartoons, for that matter. I think it's only because they think I'm too old to be watching "cartoons". I gave up on trying to get them to understand the difference between the two.

Anime = Cartoons. Really.

I don't even bother getting into huge debates and arguements when either friends or even their parents (believe it or not) want to prove that the two live in entirely seperate universes.

If your folks think anime/manga is childish, show 'em a chapter or two of Berserk or Hellsing. That'll set 'em straight... =p

My mom really doesn't care about me watching anime in any way whatsoever, just as she doesn't care about anything else I watch. About the only time she voices any dislike of it is when she is complaining about how much money I spend on it.

Usually it's not the anime that's costly for me, it's all those damned plastic kits based off an anime series (GUNDAM, Patlabor, Macross etc) I like. That's when my mom throws shit around. $$$ for those ...those ...THOSE TOYS?!!?!!?!?!?!?

My dad, being a Jap-hater, blows up whenever my brother and I "support" anything Japanese. Even playing DS and GCN or even PS2 infuriates him...

"WHAT ARE YOU DOING? THESE PEOPLE KILLED A BILLION CHINESE PEOPLE, SAY THAT IT WAS TO LIBERATE THE COUNTRY AND YOU TWO SUPPORT THEM BY BUYING/WATCHING PRODUCTS THAT COME OUT OF THAT EVIL COUNTRY?"

Mum on the other hand doesn't mind as long as we do what we're supposed to do (study, housework etc.)

Yeah, but I don't have a job or anything, and I usually spend whatever money I do manage to get on anime and games and stuff. She says I should be spending it on something else (what, I don't know, as she never tells me) or saving it, but I have nothing else to spend it on or nothing to save for.

Ouch, especially attacking anything that has assocation with Japan. It seems you've got the sharpest end of the stick, seeing that most other posts usually deal with the parents seeing anime as child-like. It seems my parents don't really have anything against Japanese-made stuff and they rather me to sit in my room studying Japanese rather than playing PS2.

i've been watching anime for about 3 years. My parents don't and never will know i watch it. If they walk in the room i turn it off. It's more trouble then its worth if they found out.

I praticaly got anime fed to me - watched nothing but Doremon, Dr. Slump and Ghlibi films all dubed in chinese ever since I could retain the attention to watch something for 15+ mins

My dad was convinced it would improve my chinese (and perhaps it did).

My parents don't mind me watching anime these days... unless we're not doing our homework and stuff over it though (but any parent would anyways even if it's not anime in particular)

I've watched a number of shows with my dad, and he liked quite a few of them. In fact, he even bought a couple of them for himself (Akira, Berserk, Hellsing, Outlaw Star, Trigun, and the Vampire Hunter D flicks).

He doesn't seem to like the style of anime comedies, so we haven't watched many of them (I think they remind him of Astro Boy or something, since he watched it when he was a kid.)

My mom couldn't care less. She doesn't like anything animated, calling it all kiddie (She doesn't even like The Simpsons!), but she doesn't disapprove it.

Jam it back in, in the dark.
