Charles Widmore already knew about the island by buying the first mate's journal that was aboard the Black Rock, so I don't think the hatch going kaboom sent off the big alert to Widmore. Even if it did, he was trying to find a way onto the island either way.
I'm confused a bit about the chronology. When did Widmore purchase the journal? Before 815 crashed or after? And how did he know that the flight crashed on this island?

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Spoiler:
Episode before last:
Ben's a time traveller. He was going into the future to take revenge because Alex was killed, then we flashforward into the future where he wakes up in the middle of the Sahara desert with a Dharma jacket. Then he asks the desk clerk what year it is. The bald guy Sayid shot in Iraq was one of the marines on the island. Then we jump back to the island. Then he jumps back in time back to the island and unleashes the smoke monster, which only kills one guy (the same guy who was shot in the future), erasing him from time. This also explains the Dharma jacket that Charlotte finds in the desert.

Ben and Widmore can't kill each other because they're each other's anchors. Eh? Anyone?

It was such a great episode tonight, and they have to go and do that shit.

Spoiler:
But Sayid is down in that room too, so no one is going to blow up just yet, I assume.
What?
Spoiler:
The only people in the room with the explosives are Jin, Desmond, and Michael. Sayid is back on the island tracking with Kate.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

This doesn't have anything to do with Season 5, but I'm rewatching 1-4 before the 5 premiere, and having wrapped up Season 2 the other day, I found a few cool easter eggs. I doubt they're anything more than that and so can't expect small things like these to get an explanation, but nonetheless they're fun to find. Maybe these are all old news but they're new to me:

I heard a theory, wild or inplausible as it may be, that the reason Ben is bloody and exhausted (and by a shipyard, it seemed) is that he went to kill Desmond's sweet Penneh.
Well, what else would it have been? He promised Widmore he'd kill his daughter, and now here he is telling telling Jack he has a promise to keep and is going to tie up some loose ends.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Wait so a few episodes back Sun with complete vitriol rejects Locke's offer to join him but now she willingly walks into his camp because Hurley wants to?

Some of my friends play on the scoring sessions, and yesterday was LAST DAY of recording. Here are some images from the final recording session.

It seems like they take it on a day-to-day basis with only cliff notes from the previous seasons to guide them into the new episodes.

Do they even realize they've only got two episodes left?
Your comment was probably made in jest, but they do write an entire season at once, you know.

It is AMAZING how much you catch when you go back and watch. I'm becoming more and more convinced that the plot actually WAS all planned out from the beginning now... There's no way it can all be coincidental.
What sorts of things are you catching? I haven't rewatched from the beginning in so long.

The only thing that makes sense is that none of it mattered because they were dead anyways.

That's how you explain all the magical bullshit. There is no explanation because none of it happened.
I am pretty certain the finale took great pains to inform its audience that this is precisely not the case.
