Well, whatever. Just because some developer from a no-name company is tossing guesses around doesn't mean it'll actually happen. The PS3 will be delayed when Sony confirms it. I'm waiting until E3 before making any solid conclusions.

Yeah, because developers develope games for next generation consoles they haven't the first clue of. That makes sense.

I think the article rings true. And sony can delay the console as much as they like, though delaying the console can only be a positive thing, as it gives developers like Ubisoft more time to add extra features and detail to their games.

Well the memory usage is a bit of a concern, but the processor time used is a non-issue. More than likely the OS will be performing all the system I/O functions as well as some application level control meaning the games themselves won't need to do this. That pretty much evens out processor usage.

Also, from the the looks of memory usage, the OS is mostly suspended when a game is playing then requires more memory if you bring up some type of system console overlay or something. Again not a big deal as it's not like the game cannot make use of this memory. It just means there might be a small load delay (32 Megs would take at most 2 seconds to load from a Blu-Ray disc) when returning to the game if the requested OS memory was being used at the time.

Also notice the refusal to name the sources.

I don't see why Sony would make their OS eat up more memory/power than MS's OS. There's no logic to it, especially since it operates in a similar manner to the 360. This is a rumor, and anyone that says they believe it does so because they want to believe, not necissarily because it holds any shred of truth to it.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

It's actually surprising they have the OS running in the background constantly. A way to check for pirated games maybe?

The latest issue of Playstation Magazine has revealed more details on the upcoming PS3, including the current hot topic, the price. Contrary to the opinion of other news organisations, PSM has named the PS3 has having quite a low price: $399 in the U.S., €322 in Europe and ¥45,965 in Japan. My hopes of Sony announcing a price at E3 are still there, despite some claims that Sony will not announce a price at the expo.

Although not new information, the magazine also claims that the PS3's 60GB non-removable hard drive will come as standard. And for those who care about backward compatibility (I know I do), PSM also revealed that PSX/PS1 and PS2 games will run on the PlayStation 3 in 720, 1080i and 1080p. The magazine also confirmed that all PS3 games will be in the Blu-ray format, and will have no region lockouts. Finally, PSM also mentioned that the launch line-up and final design of the PS3's controller will be released at the E3 gaming expo in May.

QJ.net will be sending a team to E3 to bring you the latest news, first. Stay tuned to QJ.net throughout the E3 expo in May.
I really hope this proves true. $400 I can do. Anything higher would be too much. I still prefer $350 as the maximum, but I guess we should be fortunate it'll be equal in price to the 360.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Will this region-free setting apply to PS1 and PS2 discs as well? It would make the backward compatiblity much more compelling.
I also heard that the PS1/PS2's compatibility won't be at or near 100%, is this true?

They also said there wouldn't be a hard drive in the PS3 which as now become standard. Things will change depending on how much they can refine their manufacturing process. Blu-Ray drives are already expected to cost half as much to built come this summer. I doubt will see a price point at E3 simply because the PS3 launch is still far off and Sony most likely doesn't even know what the price of the PS3 is going to be yet.

Maybe not 399$...
Quote:
Unfortunately it seems like there was a bit of misinterpretation as the information in PSM made its way to the Internet. Essentially, the magazine has no new inside source on this and the $399 price is speculation.

"We just quoted what Kutaragi said a few weeks back... I think his exact quote was 'The PS3 would be no cheaper than' and he gave a Yen amount which was the equivalent of about $425," PSM EIC Chris Slate told GameDaily BIZ. "So in the article we speculate that because game consoles are typically cheaper in the U.S. than in Japan that if $425 was the price in Yen it's reasonable to assume that it would cost $399 here. We certainly don't know that for sure."
http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/feature/?id=12524

So I guess we will have to wait a little bit more.

That Euro price seems a bit like fantasy, this is Sony we're talking about here. They have a nasty habit of absolutely raping the PAL markets by just totally ignoring exchange rates. The region-free nature of the machine is still basically the best news ever, though.

Well, a $400 price point for Japan and North America isn't all that strange, since many folks are talking about Europe possibly getting raped by an absurdly high price for the machine.

E3 (and the megaton-dropping conferences before it) aren't that far off, so we can finally see an end to all this speculation.

I'm surprised some of you thought that was new information. Kutaragi made that announcement back during the GDC, if memory serves me correctly. I remember GameSpot said that the PS3's US price point will likely be between $400 and $450.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Kutaragi talked about the price?

I thought it was some European VIP who spoke about it on radio.

Nope, at the semi-grand unveiling where various things were announced (one of which being that the final controller design would be at E3) it was announced that the PS3 would be at a competitive price but not lower than $425 or some odd number like that.

I doubt the European rep knew the price, as that's one thing that'll probably be hotly debated within Sony up until the last minute, quite possibly like the PSP.

Woah. Sony reported through a financial press release that it'll loose close to a billion dollars during the first year of the PS3.

A loss similar to the one the reported a few months before the PS2 launched, if not a little higher. So far, there's nothing we haven't seen before in their march towards their supposed launch date.

And a billion dollar loss for the first year will be insane, granted. But Sony's also banking on Blu-Ray tech to ease their pain a little bit, and you know software sales will be all but through the roof, and likely accessory sales will give them a boost too. All that new technology (and old tech a la 60GB hard drive) will certainly bring them a big loss.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

What does that have to do with a corporation with over 3 billion? I just said that we saw similar loss predictions out of Sony a few months before the PS2 launched. This isn't the PS3 alone, even though their game division is probably making up a big part of that number.

It has to do with the fact that I didn't know the PS2 numbers and I think a billion dollars is a lot of money.

In their gaming division to launch the PS3! Quite the committment. The rest of the company is doing okay, the Bravia line is doing well.

Quote:
"TOKYO, April 27 (Reuters) - Sony Corp. (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Thursday that it expected its game division to post a loss of about 100 billion yen in the current business year, hit by start-up costs for its PlayStation 3 game machine.
