Saw this while checking out the state of randomly generated gaming (Diablo clone, diablo clone,...) Central Florida University put out a free game as a proof of concept for the idea of games generating their own items that's a fun little diversion.
The game is a space shooter that plays a bit like Asteroids mixed with Diablo. You start with three basic weapons, and as you use them, the game initially creates random variations of those weapons as drops from enemies. As you use those, it then tries to create new drops based upon variations of the weapons you've liked the most. Easier to explain with a (somewhat breathless) video example.
Although its a proof of concept, the game's actually quite playable, looks relatively nice, has leveling ships, upgradable ship features, and a decent breadth.
There's single and multiplayer, but the multiplayer aspect is currently light enough on people it often just ends up being single.
The whole thing can be freely download at:
Galactic Arms Race (GAR) although you need to remember the
XNA Redistributable
Jam it back in, in the dark.
