PS3 / 360 Region free DVD (!) playback

Is it possible? Is there some sort of solution available, that does NOT require me to make a physical mod to the consoles?
All I want is to be able to play regular code 1 DVDs on code 2 consoles.
I'm not (yet, anyway...) interested in BluRay playback without region lock... Just plain old DVDs...

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Can you not rip the dvds onto the harddisc and then play them back through the console's media player?

That is, stream them from your PC's hard disk to the console for the 360 or rip them to a removable hard drive in the case of the PS3.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Ripping is of course an option, but then again, it's not REALLY an option, since it's a HUEG hassle if you just want to watch a movie you've got on your DVD shelve, or more important in my case, have some TV series of which every single disc then would first need ripping before watching is possible.
Anyway, the upside is that I've discovered the beauty of the PS3 as a DivX player now, which I hadn't actually thought of before.
Downside is, I've got some seasons of Lost and some of my favorite movies on DVD that I either have to watch with my old, shitty, non-upscaling but region free DVD player, or... rip them before watching.
No other alternative there?

There's no way to do that on the 360. I don't know about the PS3 but I would guess the same goes.

My advice is to buy a Xbox (non-360, that is) with component cables, and softmod it (or buy one pre-chipped). It's the best DVD/media player you'll ever buy, since you can use XMBC to stream media off any share you have on your network, so no more bullshitting around with that dreaded WMP media library that never works properly. It outputs in HD, and you can even play most emulated systems on it.

Shin's idea is also pretty good if you're unwilling to buy an Xbox, but yeah ripping DVDs is a complete pain in the ass.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Hmm... Hmm!
Might actually be something to look in to.
The OldBox is probably cheaper than a regular HDMI DVD-Player.
Then the question would be, how well it manages to upscale the image...
But the idea is in itself quite intruiging. Even if it's a bit odd, placing a more or less completely redundant console on the shelve with the others.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?
