Okay I'll eat crow on this one; when this was first announced and shown I wrote it off as a cheap flash game that probably should have been $10 on IOS. iOS version differences
The iOS version is now available; I cannot personally confirm, but based on people who have played the game this mode removes the Chaos Shrine, Series Mode, EMS levels, and most character customization (characters still level up and gain abilities, but you cannot equip them). The game follows the typical iOS model where the base game with two tracks and one core character from most of the games is free, and everything is paid DLC. Individual tracks are $0.99, game-specific track bundles are $2.99 (which include more than 3 tracks, but apparently NOT all the tracks for that game), and characters are $2.99. However in addition to changes and deletions there is also new content that appears to be exclusive to this version. This is 9 new characters and 11 new tracks. Additionally some tracks that were EMS levels in the 3DS version are now FMS/BMS tracks (since EMS tracks aren't in the iOS version at all), and 3 tracks that were previously just Special tracks in the 3DS version have been made properly playable FMS/BMS tracks. However not all of the EMS tracks were converted, which has resulted in 7 tracks being completely missing from this version. All of these changes are detailed as follows:

iOS version differences and additions:

Final Fantasy I – Opening Theme (EMS) – Missing from iOS version completely

Final Fantasy II – The Rebel Army (EMS) – Available in iOS version as a BMS track

Final Fantasy XII – Balthier added as a new character

Final Fantasy XIII – Fighting Fate (BMS) – Available in iOS version as a FMS track

Final Fantasy Tactics – Antipyretic (BMS) – New track exclusive to iOS version
Final Fantasy Tactics – Ramza added as a new character

Everything that follows was based on the 3DS version, so some of it may not apply to the iOS version as those modes are missing, etc.

----------

There are three Modes in the game. Main Modes are Series, Challenge, and Chaos Shrine. All of these modes will contain the three following types of Stages. They will also all contain the following notes:

Red Notes - Tap.
Yellow Arrow Notes - Slide the stylus in the indicated direction. I haven't seen this yet, but apparently on Level 99 Dark Note tracks these will rotate as they're coming towards you which is super fucked.
Green Notes - These are Hold and Release notes; sometimes the Release note been a Green Arrow which means you release while sliding in a direction.
Bluish Notes - These are the Feature Notes; getting most of these successfully will grant something special depending on the Stage type as detailed below. I've missed one or two and still gotten it to trigger.

In ALL modes you take HP damage when you miss a note. Losing all of your HP/characters is a game over.

Characters/Leveling/Stats/Items/Abilities

And this is where it becomes a Final Fantasy game. After each completed stage you get EXP, presumably based on the difficulty and performance (no idea exactly). Your Party leader will also get slightly more EXP than the other party members. Even though this is a rhythm game this is actually important; as you level up your characters gain more Abilities to equip, more CP (which is needed to equip more Abilities) and their stats go up. CP does seem to max out at 50, so you will not be able to equip all abilities on a character.

A lot of character abilities are unique, and will help with specific game modes (like travel faster in FMS, increase chance for enemy drops in FMS, etc). Many of them are also stat increase abilities, or straight Offensive abilities which will help you kill more enemies which is more chance for item drops. All of the default characters also get their "Ultimate" skill at Level 40; many of these are Limit Break type abilities that will trigger a strong attack when a Boss appears (ex. Omnislash for Cloud), but some characters will get other types of abilities (ex. Trance for Terra). Unlockable characters don't get these level 40 "ultimate" skills, but tend to make up for it in other ways with either high stats and/or more abilities (ex. Sephiroth maxes or just about maxes out both Strength and Magic). All characters do continue to still get new Abilities past Level 40 however.

Your team can also equip one item at a time. They're mostly typical Final Fantasy stuff (Potions, etc) but many are unique such as guaranteeing a Summon will be successful, the type of Summon/Chocobo you will get, etc. Items are one-time use. However equipping ANY Abilities or Items has an effect on your score.

Scoring
As with any good rhythm game your performance is ranked from F to SSS. The maximum possible score on any stage is always 9,999,999. I've personally confirmed the following:

4,000,000+ C Rank
5,000,000+ B Rank
6,000,000+ A Rank
7,000,000+ S Rank
9,000,000+ SS Rank
9,999,999 SSS Rank

The caveat is that if you have ANY Abilities or Items equipped it is impossible to score higher than 7,999,999 on any stages in Series or Challenge. This is actually the max per stage, however if you unequip all items/abilities on your current party (and the game will tell you this) you get a "Stoic Bonus" at the very end of the stage that will always give you a 2,000,000 point bonus. However also with no abilities/items equipped the game does NOT trigger Feature Mode in any type of stage, so you will never see Summons, Extended View or Chocobos as well. So essentially the game makes you choose between the chance to get SS/SSS ranks OR equipping abilities/items (which allows for more item drops). This does NOT effect Chaos Shrine mode! That mode ranks you but it's irrelevant and doesn't save it (more on that in that section) so feel free to go nuts on abilities/items in that mode.

Rhythmia
Upon completion of every stage you earn Rhythmia based on your performance, and there are a multitude of bonuses available based on characters in your party and other things. Rhythmia is essentially the currency of your overall progress in the game. You don't actually spend it, but at every 500 Rhythmia points you unlock something (more on Unlockables below). Rhythmia apparently does max at 99,999, which is actually required to unlock the last song in the Music Player.

There are 3 types of playable songs/Stages.

Battle Music Stage (BMS)

Play through a Battle BGM in "traditional" FF battle-style with 4 lanes. Note that you can still tap wherever on the touch screen to hit markers, you don't need to actually tap "in" lanes or anything like that. Successfully activating Feature Mode in these Stages swap out your party for a Summon to deal extra damage. The Summon seem to be random and the options are Ifirit, Shiva, Ramuh and Odin although Odin and Ramuh both seem to be rare. Bahamut is also available as the final Summon, but he will not appear randomly, the only way to get him seems to be to use the Bahamut's Magicite item.

Also these stages usually have a "boss" monster in them who is indicated by a roar and shockwave-type graphic when they come in. Other than this enemies seem to be at least semi-random, and will start looping if you beat the boss. Completing the song only requires you to stay alive until the end, you don't have to beat the boss or anything like that to advance. However more enemies killed means more loot, and you actually CAN loop around to and kill the boss multiple times. This is generally only doable though if you're a very high level party doing a low-level song, but this can enable you to kill bosses multiple times to grind out shards and items in Chaos Shrine. Having all four of your characters equipped with Limit Breaks that trigger on Boss enemies will also expedite this greatly.

In this mode characters with high Strength and Magic are ideal since they do the most damage to enemies; defeated enemies have a chance to drop items, and bosses have a chance to drop rare items.

Event Music Stage

These stages are usually host to the main dramatic theme or something similar from the game in question. These stages are always played over either gameplay (FF1-6) or cutscenes (7-13) of the game that more or less cover the entire game's plot. These songs tend to actually be trickier since there are usually fewer notes as compared to the other types of stages (so it's weighted more heavily per note), and these songs tend to be slower which I find trickier to hit. Also the track on these ones move all over the screen, but for the hold notes you do NOT have to follow the on-screen movement, just hold and release like you would in the battle tracks. Successfully activating Feature Mode in these tracks gives you an Extended Version of the level, basically prolonging it by around 30 seconds and getting you to the "ending" of the game.

In this mode the desired character stats are Agility and Luck, as those stats may enable you to avoid taking damage when you Miss a note.

Field Music Stage (FMS)

These stages are a right to left travel sequence. There is only one "lane" of notes, and only one character on-screen at a time (although any all-battle long abilities teammates have will be activated at the start). You move left to right, and your character's movement speed is determined by their Agility stat, plus any other items/abilities you have that would affect this. Only the Agility/Luck of your on-screen character effect movement speed, but any passive (green) party abilities your teammates have will be active as well.

Your movement speed doesn't actually affect the speed of the notes, BUT your character will travel farther. This matters because the farther your character travels in the level (you'll notice the background starts to loop) the more chances you have of encountering either a Moogle towards the end as well as another character at the every end, both of whom will give you an item. Successfully activating Feature Mode in this stage temporarily changes you into a Chocobo so you can travel faster. Yellow, Black and Red Chocobos are normally available but I'm not sure what, if anything dictates which one you randomly get. The fastest Chocobo, white, is also available but only through use of an item (Sylkis Greens) or through the Thoroughbred ability.

In this mode the desired character stats are Agility and Luck, as Agility directly effects your character's move speed and Luck affects your chance to run into Moogles.

Series Mode

Essentially the "story" mode of the game, and all that's unlocked at the start. You select any of the main number Final Fantasy games and play through a BMS, FMS, and EVS (not necessarily in that order). Also unique to this mode is that these tracks will be bookended by both an Opening and Ending track. These aren't quite levels; there will be a crystal onscreen that spheres are flying towards, and if you tap when they meet you will get a Rhythmia bonus (more on Rhythmia below). However these stages are really just interactive screens that very loosely cover the opening/ending of each game, and there's even a prompt onscreen that allows you to skip them which I would probably recommend. Once you complete a Series, it unlocks the 3 stage tracks to play in Challenge Mode. Also it's worth noting that you can only play Series Tracks in Basic Mode the first time through, more on that below.

I will also say that having to play through all of these first on Basic to unlock more stuff and higher difficulties does kinda suck, but stick with it, Expert mode is way better.

Challenge Mode
Any tracks you have unlocked for Challenge mode are playable here. This mode lets you play just one track at will. When a track is unlocked you have access to Basic and Expert difficulties, and you'll have to get at least an A rank on Expert to unlock Ultimate difficulty. This mode along with Chaos Shrine is where you will spend most of your time. However once you beat all of the tracks for a game in Expert mode it unlocks the ability to play that game in Series mode at Expert level, and same for Ultimate.

Chaos Shrine

This mode along with Challenge mode is where you will spend most of your time, and this mode definitely has the most confusion surrounding it. Early on you will unlock a Dark Note, which are the semi-random 2-song sets that you play in the Chaos Shrine. You earn more Dark Notes by either completing a Dark Note and you have no other new/unplayed Dark Notes available, or by Street Passing with people. Each Dark Note consists of a difficulty (the No. XX ranging from 1-99) and two tracks (indicated by the Mv. XX). The difficulty level (No. XX) of new Dark Notes you unlock is determined by the average party level of your characters when you unlocked that Dark Note. Also note that since you will always get a new Dark Note by beating an existing Dark Note with no other new/unplayed ones available, you can use this to your advantage by deleting any new Dark Notes and beating an earlier on with either a low level team (if your current Notes are too high level/hard) to get easier ones, or you can use this to get new Dark Notes of a specific level if you're looking for character unlocks (see Unlockables section).

The two songs that you play will always be a FMS and a BMS in that order. Unfortunately the song combinations are not completely random; there are 10 of each type that will play, and you can tell which it will be based on the Mv number. The songs are as follows:

--FMS--

0 - Mt. Gulg (FF I)
1 - Eternal Wind (FF III)
2 - Within the Giant (FF IV)
3 - Mambo de Chocobo (FF V)
4 - Terra's Theme (FF VI)
5 - Judgement Day (FF VII)
6 - Blue Fields (FF VIII)
7 - Zanarkand (FF X)
8 - Vana'diel March (FF XI)
9 - The Sunleth Waterscape (FFXII)

--BMS--

0 - Battle Theme 2 (FF II)
1 - Battle 1 (FF IV)
2 - Battle at the Big Bridge (FF V)
3 - Battle to the Death (FF VI)
4 - JENOVA (FF VII)
5 - The Man with the Machine Gun (FF VIII)
6 - Something to Protect (FF IX)
7 - Fight With Seymour (FF X)
8 - Ending Movie (FF XII)
9 - Defiers of Fate (FF XIII)

Where this mode becomes confusing is that this is the mode used to grind out crystal shards and rare items which drop from the bosses here. In the first screenshot above you can see an already cleared Dark Note showing the two songs, and beneath it is blank but you can see listings for Boss #1, #2, and #3 with 3 item drop spaces beneath each. These boss drops are the primary reason to play this mode (outside of for variety's sake). What isn't immediately clear is how to find out what boss you will face at the end of the BMS, as you will only get one.

What dictates which Boss you fight:

-If you do well enough in the FMS stage to pass the sign seen in the second screenshot above (That says Boss No. 2 or Boss No. 3) you will always get one of those two as determined below. If you do NOT reach this sign you will always get Boss No. 1 in the BMS stage.

-If you do bass the Boss sign in the FMS stage you will get either Boss 2 or 3 in the BMS. This is determined by your performance against the first two enemies in the BMS. If you do poorly you will get Boss 2, if you do well you will get Boss 3. You can actually see which you earned in-game; after you defeat the 2nd enemy and when the third one is coming on-screen, in the top right corner of the screen below your HP you will see a pop-up telling you which Boss you will be facing after you defeat the current third enemy.

You can loop through all enemies and bosses multiple times in any BMS although it is very difficult (you'll need to be very high level doing a relatively low-level course), so in Dark Notes you can actually qualify for different Bosses depending on how you performed on that "loop."

Yo Dawg I Heard You Like Unlockables
Also in typical S-E fashion there are about a billion things to unlock in this game, along with 64 Trophies (aka Achievements).

16 Unlockable Characters
-Unlock characters by obtaining 8 of the crystal shards below. You find shards primarily from boss drops in Chaos Shrine, but you can also randomly get them elsewhere like random 500 point Rhytmia unlocks.

Aerith (FFVII) / Pink Crystal
Ashe (FFXII) / Crimson Crystal
Cid (FFIII) / Yellow Crystal
Cosmos (Dissidia) / Rainbow Crystal
Faris (FFV) / Red Crystal
Kain (FFIV) / Navy Blue Crystal
Locke (FFVI) / Blue Crystal
Minwu (FFII) / Silver Crystal
Princess Sarah (FFI) / Gold Crystal
Prish (FFXI) / Purple Crystal
Rydia (FFIV) / Emerald Crystal
Seifer (FFVIII) / Grey Crystal
Sephiroth (FFVII) / Black Crystal
Snow (FFXIII) / White Crystal
Vivi (FFIX) / Orange Crystal
Yuna (FFX) / Sapphire Crystal

In Dark Notes specifically different shards are only available at certain Dark Note levels; the list below references which ones specifically so if you're looking for a certain character you can see if you're on the right track or not. Remember that having multiple characters with Libra equipped when unlocking new Dark Notes (so you can see most of the drops from the get-go) can be a big help!

Type: Levels (aka No.xx)
A: 1-25
B: 1-75
C: 26-99
D: 51-99

Character - Crystal color - Crystal type

Princess Sarah - Gold - C
Minwu - Silver - B
Cid - Yellow - A
Rydia - Green - B
Kain - Navy - D
Farris - Crimson - B
Locke - Indigo - A
Aerith - Red - B
Sephiroth - Black D
Seifer - Grey C
Vivi - Orange A
Yuna - Turquoise - B
Prishe - Purple - C
Ashe - Scarlet - A
Snow - White - C
Cosmos - Rainbow - C

13 Movies
-Movies seem to be unlocked at random 500 Rhytmia point intervals.

77 Songs for the Music Player
-Songs here also seem to be unlocked at random Rhytmia point intervals. DLC tracks unfortunately are not in the player.

81 CollectaCards
-You get CollectaCards from random enemy drops, or by using Passwords. There are three different versions of each CollectaCard: Normal, Holofoil and Platinum. Getting more of a card "upgrades" it to the next level. A listing of all currently known Passwords can be found here.

64 Trophies
-aka Achievements. A listing of them can be found here. Good luck getting 99 different Streetpasses outside of Japan -_-

Plus before every battle you get random dialogue from your party madlibs style, come on!

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Are you sure it's just Rhythmia points to unlock songs? I didn't get Dancing Mad, and I'm over 10000 points.
Also passwords unlock Collectacards too.

There's nowhere I can't reach.
WALK WITH THE DREAMERS,
THE BELIEVERS, THE COURAGEOUS,
THE CHEERFUL, THE PLANNERS, THE
DOERS, THE SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE WITH
THEIR HEADS IN THE CLOUDS AND THEIR
FEET ON THE GROUND. LET THEIR SPIRIT
IGNITE A FIRE WITHIN YOU TO LEAVE THIS
WORLD BETTER THAN WHEN YOU FOUND IT.

I definitely got Dancing Mad at 10,000. Maybe you also have to have beaten all of Series mode or something?

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I am particularly fond of the madlibs throughout the entire game, some of them are highly amusing. I've actually been enjoying this game quite a lot, even though I'm not very good at it.

Thanks for taking the time to write this daravon, I really struggle on the FMV levels myself. The directional arrows always give me the hardest time.

Supposedly this game is very hard to find. My local eb games only got 4 copies, three of them were pre-ordered and the other one was for display only. I don't even know a lot of people that actually picked this up to be honest.

I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body?

I'm seeing a LOT of people with the same initial impression as me so it probably had a small to moderate run, then people actually getting the game yesterday started flipping out about it actually being amazing so it seems like there's been a bit of a run on it.

Also it seems like if you didn't pre-order to the the free stylus that version is a bitch to find most places. If anyone's able to get that version (there's a sticker on the outside of the shrinkwrap on the front of the box) get that one for sure. Aside from the sticker thing, that stylus is waaaaaaaay more comfortable to use than the regular DS stylus. It's not that portable, but hearing all the horror stories from people having to claw the regular stylus and having cramping issues makes me glad I have it.

Also I'm pleasantly surprised that S-E dropped the DLC for $1 each, I think it was nearly $2 each in Japan. I was expecting $1.50 a track so I was going to very carefully make selections, but at a buck each with the fun I'm having with this game I'll probably just buy all of them outright. Seriously my GOTY so far. If anyone's getting it, just stick with the grind of going through all the series on Basic, it gets way better once you have Expert unlocked on everything.

I played through FFI-III, then skipped to X, and backtracked back to IV. I didn't have much trouble clearing those.

Then I went to the Chaos Shrine and immediately had trouble with the first one I played. I cleared it, but the 2nd one gave me my first Game Over screen.

This game is amazingly addictive.

Edit: Funny enough, I didn't pre-order the game but mine came with the stylus and stickers so I guess Gamestop made a mistake. :P

No, just the first run has them all included in the box. None of this retailer exclusive/preorder exclusive horseshit.

Thank goodness too. The stylus is actually really helpful

I played far too much of this last night, and I love it so far. So far my only real complaint is how much of a pain they made it to buy DLC songs by having no cart option. It would be nice if songs unlocked in Challenge Mode after playing them in the Chaos Shrine, though. I'd like to be able to play some of them, like Something to Protect, on basic just to chill out since it's one of my favorites, but I can barely pass it on expert.

I might've looked around a bit more if I'd known the stylus copies weren't exclusive to preorder. Oh well.

Interesting, the copies I saw at Futureshop yesterday and Wal-mart today were all stylus copies.

I figured it was universal first print. My bad.

You do wind up unlocking most (but not all) of the Chaos Shrine songs for Challenge mode. I know there's a few that don't unlock though.

Oh neat, some of the Password stuff as posted on GAF from a Japanese Password list and GameFAQs. Apparently each card can have multiple passwords because you get the holofoil card by getting 4 copies of the card. I don't have time right now to check these out but go nuts, I'll check this and and clean it up tonight or something.

Quote:
These English passwords 100% confirmed working (ignore leading number, obvs):

To backup a bit, I had all series mode completed before I hit the 10k mark, I'm at 15k now, and I don't have dancing mad.

I'll have to use these passwords though!

I'm not sure if a full listing of the Passwords is out yet, but I think from what I'm seeing every card is available normally in-game, but there's at least one Password for every single card, and it looks like there may actually be 4 Passwords for every card. So I guess unless you HAVE to enter a Password for certain cards you can get all Holofoils by just grinding out the game or you can just Password it up if you're so inclined. Also apparently Rhythmia maxes out at 99,999, which is also what's required to unlock the last track in the Music Player.

Also:

Quote:
There are exactly 20 songs available in the Dark Notes (10 FMS and 10 BMS). You can tell what songs are in the Dark Note before playing by looking at the Mv #. This number will always be a 2-digit number, with the first digit representing the FMS song and the second digit representing the BMS song. Here's the list:

--FMS--

0 - Mt. Gulg
1 - Eternal Wind
2 - Within the Giant
3 - Mambo de Chocobo
4 - Terra's Theme
5 - Judgement Day
6 - Blue Fields
7 - Zanarkand
8 - Vana'diel March
9 - The Sunleth Waterscape

--BMS--

0 - Battle Theme 2 (FFii)
1 - Battle 1 (FFiv)
2 - Battle at the Big Bridge
3 - Battle to the Death
4 - JENOVA
5 - The Man with the Machine Gun
6 - Something to Protect
7 - Fight With Seymour
8 - Ending Movie (FFxii)
9 - Defiers of Fate

Thanks to phineasfool and electricmouse for filling in the last three.

EDIT: There are four songs that can only be played in Chaos Shrine Dark Notes.

Zanarkand (FMS) --- normally an OP scene
Vana'diel March (FMS) --- normally an OP scene
Ending Movie (BMS) --- normally an ED scene
Defiers of Fate (BMS) --- normally an EMS
Will add this to the OP, especially the four tracks that are only playable in Chaos mode outside of their normal placement. Also the Ending Movie listed above is the FFXII one.

I also confirmed that in FMS only the active abilities and Agility/Luck of current character on-screen dictate movement, but any group passive (green) abilities will apply.

I also verified all of the following and have updated the OP accordingly. It's almost like we understand the game fully now!

-On any BMS stages you can actually loop around and kill the boss 2 or more times. It's generally only doable though if you're a high level party on a low difficulty song. Also it seems like all characters get their Ultimate ability at Level 40, and many characters get their Limit Break at 40 (like Omnislash for Cloud) which is an attack that automatically triggers every time you encounter a boss, which helps immensely. I can swing 2 shards on some Dark Notes now, and I've seen people clear like 4 by going into a Dark Note with a super high level party and the Dark Note is like No. 03 or something (very low difficulty)

-On a related note, I've seemingly confirmed that the difficulty of new Dark Notes you unlock (the No. xx) is the average of your levels on the party you unlocked it with. So you can abuse this by beating a new Dark Note with all level 1 characters or something to get a really easy Dark Note you can grind Shards on really fast with high level characters.

-In BMS the only way to get the Bahamut Summon is to use the Bahamut Magicite item.

-In FMS the only way to get a white chocobo is to use the highest level Greens item, or the Thoroughbred ability which Yuna (and maybe others) get.

-In Chaos Shrine I verified that in the 2nd BMS stage your perforamnce on the first two enemies DOES dictate whether or not you will fight Boss No. 2 or Boss No. 3 (assuming you got past the sign in the FMS). AFter the second enemy is killed and the third one comes on the screen, you'll see a pop-up in the top right just under your HP and will say either Boss No 2 or Boss No 3 to indicate which one you will get.

Going through the passwords...

36 Mega Flare (Rat tail)
40 Bad breath - no capital B on Breath
42 Sun Blade (Yoichi Bow)
53 lantern/Knife - does NOT work for this number (tried both uppercase and lowercase for both)
54 Bartz's rival - does not work (Big Bridge) does, however
55 White Wind
57 Ragnarok (Tidal Wave)
62 Heartless Angel
64 Mother
68 Elixir please! (UFO?)
80 Earth Shaker (Trapezohedron, Platinum Ingot)
81 Demonsdance (God of Discord)

Here's what's supposedly an up to date list that's being maintained in a Gamefaqs thread. They've also confirmed that there are only 3 Passwords available for each card, so any of the ones below that have 3 different ones listed that's it. Number 40 is literally "Darkness, Silence, Poison" without the parentheses or quotations. It is in parentheses to indicate it is all one password instead of each word being a password separated by a comma.

There's few enough people in this thread that I'll probably just wait until we have a 100% list to add it to the OP. I'm not bothering with these at the moment yet, since you (I believe) can find all the cards normally, so I'll worry about it once I've unlocked everything else or something.

1 Class Change, Warrior of Light, Sarah's Lute
2 Wild Rose, Wyvern
3
4 Dark Knight
5
6 Flowered tights, Magitek Armor, Slave Crown

80 Earth Shaker, Trapezohedron, Platinum Ingot
81 God of Discord, Demonsdance

Oh this is also super useful as well (assuming it's correct), someone on GAF pulled something from the Japanese wiki to pin down exactly how to get specific crystal shards:

There are four types of crystals, and each type appears in Dark Notes of a certain range of levels.

Type: Levels
A: 1-25
B: 1-75
C: 26-99
D: 51-99

Character - Crystal color - Crystal type
Princess Sarah - gold - C
Minwu - silver - B
Cid - yellow - A
Rydia - green - B
Kain - navy - D
Farris - crimson - B
Locke - indigo - A
Aerith - red - B
Sephiroth - black D
Seifer - grey C
Vivi - orange A
Yuna - turquoise - B
Prishe - purple - C
Ashe - scarlet - A
Snow - white - C
Cosmos - rainbow - C

There's nowhere I can't reach.

A few things:

-Japan is getting 4 more tracks on 7/11. This will bring the total up to 52; wonder if this will be the last pack or not (they said initially they'd be doing "at least" 50 tracks). Tracks are:

Final Fantasy X - Final/Decisive Battle
Final Fantasy XI - Sarutabaruta
Final Fantasy XII - Boss Battle
Final Fantasy XIII - Desperate Struggle

-My previous post (which I'll add to the OP) about what level of Dark Notes have the potential to drop what crystals seems to be correct. Additionally I found out a sweet way to work that a bit. When unlocking new Dark Notes the Libra ability will show you 1 or more items that drop on the new Dark Note automatically (depending on the level of Libra). What I didn't realize is that multiple characters get it and it stacks. Cid gets Level 3 Libra, then I think a few other characters get Libra 1 or 2 and you can equip multiple. In conjunction with this, the game will ALWAYS give you a new Dark Note if you beat any of the ones you already have and do NOT have a new/unplayed Dark Note. There's two advantages to this:

1)If your Dark Notes are getting too hard you can delete your new/unplayed Dark Note, beat a very early Dark Note with a low level team (since Dark Note difficulty/No. is determined but the average team level when you unlocked it) and get a new Dark Note at a lower level. This is useful also if you need a crystal that's only available at a lower level (I had this problem with red shards actually) and all of your Dark Notes are too high and are a pain in the ass to beat with a low-level group.

2)The highest tier of crystals becomes available at No. 51+, so you can make it easier on yourself if you're farming for shards by deleting any new Dark Notes, then beating a really easy Dark Note with a team average of ideally mid 50s-60s that also has a lot of Libras equipped. You'll be able to see a ton of the items immediately to see if it has what you need or not, and if it doesn't delete it and go again. I think I had Lightning with Libra 1, Locke with either 1 or 2 Libras, and Cid with Level 3 Libra and I could see almost all the items from the get-go without needing to even play it.

Right now I'm focusing on getting the last few characters unlocked (only missing 1-3 shards of 3 characters, and I have ZERO shards for Kain but just unlocked a Dark Note using the above method that's only No. 53 or so and has them) then after that I'll probably work on trying to get all SS ranks on the songs. Was going to go for all Trophies to go for a :C: (no way in hell I am SSS ranking every song) but there's a bunch of trophies that require a shitload of street passing and whatnot, so that's not going to be an option. Also I'm just going to link to these in the OP, but Gamefaqs has what appears to be a pretty solid accurate list of both all the Passwords, as well as all the Trophies.

Passwords: Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Cheats, Codes, and Secrets for 3DS - GameFAQs

Trophies: Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Wiki - Walkthrough and Guide for 3DS - GameFAQs

That's a trick that will definitely come in handy. I was wondering if there was an easier method of obtaining some lower level Dark Notes, but I hadn't thought about trying that. Lately I've been farming the same Note for Indigo and... Crimson shards? I forget. It's red, and doesn't matter as much because I want Locke. It's an easy field and battle song, so I can beat the boss every time without fail.

You might want to wait and see if you can find it on sale, but honestly you could probably do fine with a bit of practice. You have to go through all of the Series mode songs on Basic at first anyway, so you don't have to dive straight into the Expert difficulty stuff in the Chaos Shrine.

Ugh, only two more characters left. Long term the decision to grind out to get all the characters ASAP with the thought that I can be leveling them up while I work on SS/All Critical the songs in Challenge mode is smart. Short-term though it's a fucking grind on mostly the same Dark Notes. I'm down to only needing one more Purple Shard and and three more Navy Shards and I'm done; the note I'm currently doing has the chance to drop both from Boss 3, but it's high enough level where I can only kill the boss once.

Also it's worth noting because the game doesn't make this clear, but if a boss has a chance to drop a shard you no longer need they can still drop it, taking up that drop slot for you. So for example if a boss drops one shard that you need, and the other two are ones you already have all of, you only have a 33% chance still of getting the one you need, and a 66% chance of getting nothing. It's annoying.

Edit: FINALLY GOT EVERYONE. Fuck.
