VVVVVV for Vendetta

VVVVVV, the latest game by Terry Cavanagh (Don't Look Back, Judith, Pathways) was released yesterday. Check this shit out, yo.

YouTube Video

It's an open world platformer: explore a dimension, find your crewmates, and don't run into the spikes that some fucker left lying around everywhere for no reason. The core mechanic is that you can't jump, but instead you can flip gravity back and forth so you start falling in the other direction. Not an original idea by a longshot, but it explores the heck out of it with a bunch of interesting and challenging room designs.

http://thelettervsixtim.es/

The website has a demo available online (Flash) and for download for Mac/Windows (Flash packaged as an executable). The demo contains two of the game's eight areas, but it doesn't have the overworld. In the full version, you can play the areas in basically whatever order you want; there aren't any gates like ammo doors blocking portions of the map, but there are a few sequenced areas you don't have any control over.

The full version is $15 (USD). If you're a filthy clockwatcher, I finished the main game to full completion in a shade under two hours, with about 550 deaths or so. There are a few bonus features, like time trials, but nothing really major. It was a pretty damn enjoyable two hours, though, with a lot of difficult challenges that never really get unfair (save for a few rooms, you'll know them when you see them). Just give the demo a shot, it won't take too much of your time. Here's what chat said about the demo last night:

Quote:
02:25 <+Garr> This VVVVVV game is pretty rad.

02:26 <+Term> That VVVVVV is very entertaining

02:38 <+Mo0> Holy fucking shit
02:38 <+Mo0> This vvvvvv game is I Want To Be The Metal Storm
02:38 <+Mo0> FUCK YES
02:42 <+Mo0> Oh my god, and this other level everything is just outlines
02:42 <+Mo0> Fuck yeah this game is great
The soundtrack is by Magnus "SoulEye" Pålsson. When you enjoy it (not "if," because you will enjoy it on account of it being rad as fuck), you can purchase it digitally from his website, Souleye Digital Music, for $4. There's 34 minutes of music total.

Holy shit.

So the music is awesome.

So I buy it.

Being the epic faggot I am, I am curious regarding FLACs.

So I email the guy. He's like "YEAH SURE I GOT SOME FLACS JUST GIVE ME AN FTP ACCOUNT TO UPLOAD TO". What. Really? AWESOME.

So I do.

SO HE DOES.

BECAUSE HE IS AMAZING.

So I donated again.

How ya doing, buddy?

I've seen mention of this a few places and it definitely looks worth checking out, so I might (if I find time) get around to downloading this and giving it a go (and then probably buying it).

I've seen footage of this in Kolba's journal (I think) and it made me want to play Jet Set Willy, which I did for about an hour before almost smashing my laptop through a window in frustration.

In theory you can complete JSW, if you fix the stupid bug with a POKE. In practice, nobody will ever do it, unless they have tons of patience and savestates on a hair-trigger. V^6 does look kinda fun, but I have to admit I don't know if I'm enough of a masochist.

Here are some of the Little Things in the game that brought a to my face:
  • In the intermission stages, Spoiler: the dialogue changes based on what character is with you (the stages automatically occur after you rescue the third and fourth crewmates, if I remember correctly).
  • In the first intermission stage, Spoiler: if you die, your partner gets a sad face, and vice versa.
  • After you rescue a crewmate, Spoiler: if you talk to everyone you've already rescued, they'll all have a new, unique piece of dialogue saying how glad they are that the person is back.
  • In The Final Level, Spoiler: after you activate the terminal, you pass through a corrupted amalgamation of new rooms and rooms from previous levels. Some of those rooms are from The Warp Zone and The Final Level, where the rooms loop back onto themselves. However, because you've deactivated the dimensional anomaly, none of them loop any more. There's one previously looping room that you enter and leave three different times.

So I just played the demo and died about 200 times. At least a quarter of those deaths were most likely on the I'm Sorry and Please Forgive Me! rooms.

The soundtrack from what I heard is really cool. I don't usually listen to music while I'm just sitting on the computer, but I could see myself listening to this.

For those who bought the game, is there the option to use a gamepad, or is it keyboard only? I'll probably buy it regardless, but this is something I'd really like to play with a controller.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

I don't get it. A lot of people are mentioning this one but I did it in about 3 tries. Same with Villi people.

Has everyone done Doing Things The Hard Way ? That took me about 300 deaths.

It comes with a third party app called JoytoKey and that works with my antique microsoft sidewinder so you shouldn't have a problem.

OK, about I'm Sorry and Please Forgive Me:

What?

I didn't die on that. Then I proceeded to die like nobody's business on A Difficult Chord, so.

I was speaking idiomatically.
It was lunchtime at Wagstaff.
Touching butts had been banned by the evil Headmaster Frond.
Suddenly, Tina Belcher appeared in the doorway.
She knew what she had to do.
She touched Jimmy Jr's butt and changed the world.

I have nothing against indie games. Game looks awesome and I loved Don't Look Back.

My point was the music in the trailer reminded me of a THE SCENE intro which I found amusing.
