Blogger claims Kondo "stole" bass riff for SMB
Interesting story:
This guy randomly found a record that features a bassist playing the famous six notes of the underground theme from Super Mario Bros. The thing is, this record is from 1979, 6 years before SMB was released. For the curious, the record is called "Friendship," and the bassist's name is Abraham Laboriel. You can listen to a comparison clip at his blog here: http://maubrowncow.com/index.php/200...6-years-ealier Just how similar it is is up for debate, but it at least seems like Kondo may have been inspired by this "Friendship" album. People at the blog are saying people in the music industry sue (and win) over less. Regardless, I want that song; it sounds like good stuff. Jam it back in, in the dark.
Check out my original music at my Soundcloud page!
Latest music rips (updated January 10, 2012): SimCity DS - Jazz/ambient/electronic music including interesting reworkings of songs from the fantastic SimCity 3000 soundtrack Cold Winter Original Game Music Score - Really cool; dark, full, emotional strings mixed with drums, piano, choir. Kind of like Furious Angels? Play-Asia - Japanese CDs, game soundtracks, game imports, & more |
Bah, it's only like 6 notes of similarity. It could easily be a coincidence.
There's nowhere I can't reach. |
There certainly is a chance that it could be a coincidence.
If Kondo did indeed borrow the idea from that "Friendship" album, then all I can say is.... He has good taste. That sample was quite awesome, I'm going to find the whole song, not for comparison's sake, but for my own enjoyment YEAR LATER EDIT: Holy hell I cringe looking at my earlier posts This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Obviously a coincidence. It isn't even as if those six notes are in a particularly complex arrangement. Besides, who even cares about the underworld theme?

I read the whole story, but the download isn't work. Someone who has download could share this comparison?
I was speaking idiomatically. |

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
I would think that if the original artist would have cared about this, he would have brought suit in the 22 years since the game was released. Of course, if the guy is still alive (and desperate enough) he could come out of the woodwork. Its hard to tell with the clip being down if this is just a case of "it sounds vaguely like it so Kondo must have stolen it" or "this was taken verbatim from the track"
