GFF RSS Feed?

Lightbulb GFF RSS Feed?

So I just got into RSS like an hour ago and I'm already seeing the benefits of quick updates for my bittorrent and webcomic haunts. For those of you who aren't familiar with RSS feeds they basically work with your browser or a RSS Reader program to give you updates whenever you query them which for a reader program can be easily automated. I have mine set to 10 minutes. So every ten minutes the program will check and see if there are any new torrents or webcomics and if there are it will report back to me in an out of the way pop-up in the lower right corner above the system tray.

It doesn't interrupt your full-screen games or media players and you can tell it to play a noise or not if you want to. You can also ignore the updates and quickly check all the news you want very quickly in an organized fashion any time you want later. It's all very convenient.

I'm currently using this: http://www.rssreader.com/

Take a look at it in action:

So Acer, what's your friggin' point already?

My point is what if GFF and GFwiki had an RSS feed? For example, there's a new entry or update to an entry in GFwiki. You can then get news of it via this program. Something important comes up in the forums like a new community event such as a theme week or a VGM contest. Not all of us go to Community Commons all the time so having a nice little reminder in our RSS reader would probably alert us much faster. Perhaps you want something as simple as the RSS feed informing you that someone has made a new post in a thread that you are subscribed to. RSS feed could probably do it.

So GFF, what do you think? Have any other ideas of how an RSS feed could be used for the community? What sounds feasible and would you use it?

Please, I'm a newbie to RSS so if you also think there's a better program to use out there I'm all ears.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I always wondered why GFF had the RSS feed disabled. It's a standard feature of vBulletin.

Besides, I'm using Thunderbird to read RSS feeds. Plain and simple.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Actually, GFWiki already has an RSS feed (courtesy of MediaWiki) which I've been using for months.

And yeah, vBulletin has RSS feed options. Maybe I'll look into implementing them.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Awesome! Adding that right now, Blah. =D

zip asked a good question in chat.

<zip> does that work with journals too AcerBandit?

So now that we know it's possible with the forums could we also do it for the chocojournals too? And to what extent can we do all this?

Considering that bobo already has a 'newest journal entries' list on the main journal page, it should be only a matter of adapting the code into external.php (or a separate file). I'd rather have bobo handle that, though.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Feeds for GFF would be fantastic. I'm a big proponent of RSS (mostly because it makes my life 10x easier).

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

RSS journals would be ok, but i wouldn't bother using feeds for forums. If a couple of threads were busy it would just flood the reader I can only imagine what the wiki one is like.

Opera's built in reader is pretty nifty though. Journal feeds would be neat.

The wiki feed isn't as busy as you think, Pom.

So it's been three years, and RSS has become much more common, but GFF still doesn't support it (that I know of). Many of us have Blackberries and iPhones, and it would be so much easier to have an RSS feed of most recent posts, and maybe another for journal entries. GFF isn't particularly mobile-browsing friendly, but RSS would solve that problem.
