Basically I'd like to kill all unnecessary processes during the times that I'm working on MIDI sequencing. I've got a GB of RAM, but I've loaded a ton of samples into the sequencer that slows everything to a crawl, and playback is choppier than hell.

Will killing processes in the Task Manager help free up some resources so things aren't so unbearable? And if I end a lot of stuff, will it make a noticeable difference?

It'd be helpful to post a list of what processes you're usually running. You can also run msconfig (start > run > msconfig) and check the startup tab, some programs install (often un-necessary) startup programs. (Ulead comes to mind).

Here are a couple screencaps with info. I am not aware of how crucial several processes/startup items are, so I am reluctant to end them.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I can't tell what Services you have running from those screenshots--can you run services.msc from the Run prompt in your Start Menu, maximise the window, and print-screen that?

Also, do you have any printers or peripherals installed which you require? Black Viper used to keep a good process list up, but his site is poof, IIRC.

Typically, on any computer, 1/2 the stuff in the start-up doesn't need to be there. Just looking at yours, there are a pile that don't need to be there. Easiest thing is to just copy the file name (such as msgr2.exe) and do a search on Google. There are numerous sites that will identify the file/program and list how important it is on start-up.
