Hmm, I've only recently noticed this thread exists . . . ah well.

I've looked through the thread and noticed there wasn't much about J-Pop from before 1990. Coincidentally, I've only started finding about older J-Pop from random YouTube browsing. And that was about a month ago. Now, I've been perusing WinMx for this sort of music and got quite more than I expected. Not entire albums, but an interesting spread of artists and songs from the late 1960s to the late 1980s.

For those who have ventured into my journal, you would have read up occasionally on my discovery of older J-Pop, and I've brought along a few people who have taken a liking to it, it seems.

I don't think I'm a good enough authority yet on pre-1990 J-Pop, and I wonder if any of you are better at giving a crash course on that.

In the meantime, I'll announce to you that I have begun organizing what I've downloaded and compiled the J-Pop into CD-sized volumes. While not exactly CD rips or anything, it's better than having not known them, I would think. Those interested can download the first two volumes from the links in my journal.

The first two volumes consist of as much of the songs I can get that I can discern from the three YouTube clips that started my interest in older J-Pop.

I might as well present them to y'all to show how it all began for me. The following are compilation clips from some sort of Japanese music program that aired at the time:

(1975 - 1979)
YouTube Video

(1980 - 1983) - Japanese people like to cry too much
YouTube Video

(1972 - 1987)
YouTube Video

Haha I was like that for a while. It took a certain new YUI album release for me to stop playing that, but now those two pretty much own my playlist.

Also, the nobodyknows+ "Hero's Come Back!!" single (current Naruto OP) comes out in a week. <3

I have a question. I recently got completely hooked on Naruto, especially the intro for Season 1. The song is "Rocks" by Hound Dog.

Does the rest of their music have the same sort of "Hair Metal" feel as that song?

Yeah, I heard about that, I can't believe it, it's crazy.

On a slightly brighter note, The Brilliant Green are still together and releasing a new single on the 3rd July. That's right - TBG. New single. Woot! I really hope it's good.

Yeah, I didn't even know who she was and the news made me really depressed...I think it was because it looked like she was on her way to recovery, planning a new album and everything, and then this happened.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Has anyone here heard/purchased Chihiro Onitsuka's new single, "everyhome?" What do you think of it? I think I absolutely can't wait for a new album.

No, she's just done the song for one (Sidecar ni Inu), she's not actually in it this time. My Generation is also a tie-in, but with a dorama rather than a movie.

Someone mentioned (I forget who) Go! Go! 7188. I've seen some of their videos on Youtube, and I'm quite impressed. I've been trying to look for some torrents, but all of them are either dead, or has no seeders. Help?

Ok, I haven't been on GFF for an eternity it seems (I still read occasionally but haven't posted), but now I would like some help.

To get straight to the point, I'm looking for Japanese karaoke discs. By this I mean DVDs that have the lyrics shown in synch with the voice(s), and not the audio tracks without the voice (of course this will also be on the DVD, with the original track).

I have found a lot on amazon.co.jp and hmv.co.jp, but there is no way on those two sites that I can easily identify the artists and songs that I would like to get (hmv seems to be slightly better). It either just lists the artist, song title or neither from what I have seen.

I'm looking for artists such as Hikaru Utada, Matsuura Aya, Shiina Ringo, YUI, and anyone else along those lines. Also any other popular jpop artists and well known songs that are frequently sung as karaoke would be good. I have no idea which is the popular ones that are usually sung.

It would be good if I can get compilations of songs from various artists that I like and then compilations of popular songs.

My Japanese skills is OK at navigating simple sites, but anything with a lot of writing will take me too long to decode.

Any sort of help with this will be greatly appreciated.

Tokyo Jihen has released a new single, called "Osca":

YouTube Video

Is it just me or does this seem both visually and aurally disappointing compared to Jihen's other stuff? It seems like a pretty radical departure from the classy image I usually associate with Shiina, into almost a YUKI-ish territory. I mean, they've resorted to panty shots for crying out loud. ;_;

I've preordered Tokyo Jihen's new album (along with Maki Goto's 4th, which is going to be called "How to use SEXY", oh yes). I can't say I've listened to the new song, will probably wait for the album, or if a decent version appears on

I'm still very much loving my YUI stuff, but if you haven't already I recommend checking out Namie Amuro's new album "PLAY", which is large spoonfuls of awesome.

Ah fucker.. now I'm listening to Tokyo Jihen and Shiina Ringo's stuff again. I haven't listened to jpop for such a long time that it actually sounds so good this time.. -_- Listening to Shiina's latest album "Heisei Fuzoku", which I should say is a lot different from her Tokyo Jihen stuff, this album reminds me of parts from "Karuki Zamen Kuri No Hana". Argh, curse you OP! Now I'm pretty curious about Namie Amuro's new album.

(I think this means I'll be rebuilding my jpop folder from scratch...)

Hey guys, I've been out of the Japanese music scene for quite some time now, and I kind of require some help getting new bands to listen to. For starters, I like rock groups with female vocalists (tokyo jihen, do as infinity, the brilliant green, etc.) I was wondering if you guys can recommend some new (or older) bands that have the same sound or theme in their music?

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

Well The Brilliant Green have a new single out, that might interest you.

As for other female rock-ish bands, let me think. Well Maria have their debut album coming out soon, so that's worth a look. Mika Nakashima has a couple of new things on the horizon, and she generally has that sort of sound. Other than that, not sure.
