The Shins

Because The Shins have a new album coming soon (January) I thought I'd start a thread about the band.

Quote:
The Shins began in 1997, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, as a side project of Mercer (previously of Blue Roof Dinner) and Sandoval, who were both members of the lo-fi musical group Flake (formed in 1992). By 1999, Flake (which by then had been renamed Flake Music) was disbanded and all of its former members became The Shins. The band released two 7" singles on Omnibus, "Nature Bears A Vacuum" (1999) and "When I Goosestep" (2000), before going on tour with Modest Mouse. During the tour, they were met in San Francisco by a Sub Pop representative, who eventually offered to release their debut album.

Anyway, who else is excited that they're finally releasing another album?

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I excited. The shins rock my face off. I love their lyrics, especially on their debut album. I'm also proud of them for being fellow Albuquerque"ians" or "ites" or whatever. However, I don't think they give enough props to ABQ. A buddy of mine who's plugged in to the local music scene at home has partied with them a few times.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

I remember listening to The Shins from Garden State. That's all I've heard from them but the bit that Zach heard - it was pretty good. What's your favourite song btw?

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Well... You might want to consume this then.

I've had it for a while and it's a VERY GOOD album. My favorite song on it so far is Australia but I doubt that the final release is going to retain this track order or amount. Enjoy it, you guys.

My older brother sent the album my way, and I think it's fantastic (I'll most likely go buy it once it hits shelves so I can rip a FLAC copy for myself). Phantom Limb is definitely my favorite track on it.

I had completely forgotten The Shins existed before he sent me the album, too.

Never heard of them. Sounds interesting. I think I will have a listen just to see what the hype is all about.

I'll let you know what I think. Should it be something that I should get if I like the music?

Thanks a lot. Very cool. I'm not loving every song, immediately, like I did with my usual Shins compilation CD, but I'm sure a lot of these will grow on me. So far my favorites are Sleeping Lessons and Split Needles.

Did I say "Thanks" yet? Because: thanks.

You should definitely check them out then. Either buy an album or download some songs.

My favorite song of theirs would probably be "Those to Come" or "Pink Bullets".
They're both on the mellow side of their musical spectrum, a little bit like "New Slang" from the Garden State soundtrack to compare it to something you've heard.

Whoa, thanks Enceph!
I doubt this is the final mix though, I mean last I heard they were still in the studio wrapping things up.

How ya doing, buddy?

Wow, this is the first time I've heard the new single. Seems like another stellar album is about to be released. Thanks for the link Encephalon, I'll download it later on tonight when my connection isn't acting up and see if my excitement is justified.

Well, I have to say that I liked them. My roommate however thought it sucked. But since when did I ever listen to him?

Anyway, I will definitely be checking out more of The Shins.

Ever since Garden State came out I've been a pretty big fan of the Shins, but boy were they horrible in concert. It was pretty depressing.

Even worse than The Killers on SNL?
That performance practically put me off on their new album. If it wasn't for my brother playing it for me I would have never bothered to listen to it.

I haven't seen the Killers live, and I've never really liked their music, so oh well. As for the Shins, they performed a free concert at the CMU Tech Fair a few years back. Let's just say they'd have to pay me to see them again.
