Saw The World's End this week. Overall, nothing was ever going to top Shaun of the Dead, if anything I'd say it was on par with Hot Fuzz. Worth a watch, but fizzles towards the end. Much darker feel to it in places. My judgement is a bit clouded because I felt quite a personal resonance with parts of it, and I'd need to watch it again to get a proper sense of it.
I can't wait to see this. I watched Spaced earlier this summer on Netflix and it was one of the funniest shows I've ever seen. It seems dated on the surface, but the cast works perfectly together and it's so...positive. Throw in classic moments like the performance art show, the paintball game, invisible guns and the rave, and it's up there among my favorite shows now.

I started watching Orange is the New Black and breezed through most of it in the last two days. I gave up after the first 10 minutes a while ago, but for some reason it clicked this time. It's funny, but it's also pretty cliche in that everyone seems to be fundamentally good and just a victim of circumstance.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I watched Blue Is The Warmest Color a few nights ago. Damn. I can't get it out of my head. There's way too much controversy about the sex scenes. Yes, they're long and graphic, but it's not shock porn or anything and doesn't feel out of place. I thought it was a really raw and honest coming of age/first love movie, and didn't want it to end.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

I'd be curious to hear what you think. I don't know anyone who's seen it - I went alone because it's a tough sell to go "Hey bro wanna go watch this subtitled 3-hour lesbian coming of age movie?". The IFC in New York drew some flack/support because they said they weren't going to card teenagers even though it's an NC-17 movie.

Even without the lesbian factor, I still think it's an incredible film. La Vie D'Adele: Chapitres 1 et 2 (the French title) is probably a better fit than Blue is the Warmest Color.

How ya doing, buddy?

Some stuff from the last few months:

Her: Thought it would be awkward, wasn't. Really natural and honest, and the use of color was awesome.
12 Years a Slave: I don't know...it's a powerful movie that I wouldn't want to watch again. Expect it'll do well at the Oscars though.
Blue Jasmine: Cate Blanchett kills it.
American Hustle: Entertaining ride, but I don't know if it has longevity.
Wolf of Wall Street: A bit too long. Wouldn't put it in the upper echelon of Scorsese movies but I enjoyed it.
Frances Ha: It's like Girls, but better.
Inside Llewyn Davis: Didn't really know what to expect going in and the subject matter seemed "meh", but it's the Coen brothers and my friend really wanted to go. Amazing soundtrack. Very atmospheric and melancholy. One of my favorites of the year.
The Act of Killing: CRAZY documentary where they basically get a former executioner in the Indonesian communist purges to recreate their experiences as a movie. It's haunting.

Watched Under The Skin tonight. It was pretty intense and unsettling. Not sure what to think, but it's definitely lingering in my mind. I think the theater collectively let out a breath when it was over. If you've ever thought "They need to make a really creepy and disorienting movie where Scarlett Johansson is a naked alien that preys on the thirsty men of Scotland," well, this is the movie for you. The score was excellent, although again, unnerving.

I just watched The Guest after hearing good things. It's fucking awesome. It's kind of like Drive without taking itself seriously. Campy and has a killer soundtrack. The trailer is pretty much spoiler-free.
