Modern Warfare 3 thread of not this shit again, aka I HEARD YOU LIKE LEVELING DAWG

Let's face it, at least some of us are going to buy MW3 if nothing else through sheer hubris. That being the case, aside from one callback I'm unhappy with, they seem to actually be making some changes I'm pretty excited about. Rather than make some sort of bigass OP that no one gives a shit about including me (Reach says hi) I figured it would be worthwhile to put a thread up, and highlight some of the bigger features/changes that not everyone may aware of, especially if you haven't been following the game up to release.

Pointstreaks (aka Killstreaks) and Deathstreaks
-Killstreaks are now called Pointstreaks due to one of the biggest changes I'm personally thrilled about: you can now also earn points towards your streaks for things other than kills, such as captures/defends, plants/defuses, assists, etc.
-You can now manually choose which streak to use! (aka you're no longer locked in to using them in the order of last obtained)
-Streaks now reset in the same life, meaning once you earn your last one, you immediately start towards your first one again without having to die.
-And my main bummer of the game: streak stacking returns from MW2 (aka streak kills count towards your next pointstreak).

Pointstreaks are now dividing into 3 distinct "Packages." You have to choose one Package, then all three of your Streaks come from that Package only. All 3 offer different options as well as some distinct differences. Assault and Support are unlocked at Level 4, Specialist at Level 20.
-Assault Strike Package: As implied, generally more offensive options. Points earned reset when you die (like previous games). Full List

-Support Strike Package: Generally more defensive/support options. Points earned do NOT reset when you die! Full List

-Specialist Strike Package: This is a weird one; at 2, 4, and 6 points you are given additional Perks (which you can customize the order of), and at 8 points you are given all Perks in the game excluding Overkill (and any others you choose to manually disable). The only other streak you are given was recently discovered that at 25 points (which have to be earned through gun kills) you get the M.O.A.B. This operates similar to the Nuke in MW2 but does not end the game; when called in it will kill the entire opposing team (who will respawn), and then the other team is EMP'd until the rest of the match.
Deathstreaks now return as well. Full List

Perks
Perks return and work in the same fashion. Probably worth noting that there is no Marathon Pro or equivalent. Also One Man Army, Commando, and Danger Close are also all gone. Full List

Weapon Proficiency
New to MW3, you now also level up each gun individually by getting kills with it. As you level up the gun, you unlock new proficiencies to equip. You can only equip one proficiency at a time, and only primary weapons have proficiencies.
Kick - Reduced Recoil - Available on all gun types.
Range - Increased range - Submachine guns and Shotguns only.
Focus - Reduced flinch when shot - Available on all gun types.
Melee - Faster melee - Submachine guns and Riot Shield only.
Stability - Reduced weapon sway - Available on all gun types.
Impact - Better bullet penetrations - All gun types except Submachine guns and Shotguns.
Speed - Faster movement with weapon equipped - LMG's, Snipers and Riot Shield only.
Damage - Shells do more damage - Shotguns only.
Breath - Hold breath while ADS - Assault Rifles only.

Prestige Shop
-Another new addition to MW3. Every time you Prestige in MW3, you will earn one Prestige Token, which you can use to spend in the shop. Also, if you have prestiged in any of the four previous CoD games on the same console (MW, MW2, WaW, Blops) you will be given one Token for each game (one per game, regardless of # of Prestiges). If you have Tokens from previous games the shop becomes available to you immediately; otherwise it will not appear until you Prestige once in MW3.
-Also in MP lobbies MW3 will display your most recent Prestige icon from the past 4 games as well.
-MW3 returns to MW2 in that there are only 10 Prestige levels (as opposed to 15 in Blops), but each Prestige now runs to Level 80 instead of 70.

Shop options (all cost 1 Token):
-Extra Custom class (up to 5 times, for a total of 10)
-Double XP (lasts 2 in-game hours)
-Double Weapon XP (lasts 2 in-game hours)
-Regular Package (Titles and Emblems, possibly Challenges as well?)
-Unlock Gear (Only available once you have actually Prestiged once in MW3. This allows you to start your next and ALL future Prestiges with any piece of equipment immediately unlocked from Level 1.)
-Hardened Package (Titles and Emblems, possibly Challenges as well?)
-Veteran Package (Titles and Emblems, possibly Challenges as well? Also appears that you will need to Prestige a certain number of times for this to become available)
-Reset All Stats (Literally as it sounds; it completely wipes you back to Level 0/Prestige one, with all of your in-game stats completely erased. There is absolutely no indication provided that you are not just a completely new person, this is for the truly hardcore who want to do it all over again.)

Call of Duty Elite
Call of Duty Elite is a strange beast that they did a horrible job of explaining upfront, but actually winds up not being that bad. There is a ridiculously long chart with full details here, but here is the long and short of it:

-Free users get access to a bungie.net-type system with heatmaps, clan setups, groups, apps, etc, etc.

-Premium members ($50/year, no monthly option, can be paid for in MS points or PSN funds) get extended features such as extended storage, extended clan support and leveling up (?), access to tournaments with real and in-game prizes, exclusive titles/skins. The key selling point is access to "20 pieces of MW DLC to be released monthly," basically meaning that you get all DLC released in the next year for free (and possibly early). They've said this will include not only MP maps, but modes, Spec Ops missions, and other things. They have also confirmed that you keep the content even if you let your subscription lapse. Also Premium members get access to two exclusive tv shows, one from Will Arnett and Jason Bateman (wat), and another from Ridley Scott's company that highlights rivalries in-game between existing groups such as cops vs firefighters (WAT).

-"Founder" status is an additional level for anyone who pre-orders/joins Elite by 11/13/11. You will get access to more exclusive skins/camos etc, as well as other exclusive contests, etc.

This looks absolutely chaotic, judging by the videos. Not sure if it'll be an awful, shithole mess like MW2 or something solid, lots of fun and actually playable like Blops. Judging by the information and media blitz I'm more inclined to assume the former, but at this point it could go either way. I'm going to wait on impressions, as I'd trust a Treyarch led game more than an Infinity Ward led one at this juncture. (God, just typing that seems so STRANGE)

That said, the commercials are awesome.

Sure, there won't be any fundamental changes to the core gameplay; they're just not going to risk making major changes to something that has been so successful for them. But these smaller changes that they're making along the edges look interesting at the very least. I like the idea of several types of point streaks to help include the players who aren't necessarily Rambo-ing through matches. It's nice that they're opening up a reward system for players who play a more support style role. If they had the support strike package during CoD4, Mo0 would have had air support in the sky non-stop.

Weapon proficiency is one of the things I'm really looking forward to. Generally speaking, once I try out all of the guns, I usually end up with four or five that I really like and will just stick with them, so the idea of using a gun and getting the opportunity to tweak it a bit is nice.

I'm hoping it will be a little more tactical than Black Ops was though. Give me a little bit of tall grass to lay in please.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I know I'm going to be too busy with Saints Row 3 to pick this (or, to be fair, Battlefield 3) up, but I like the fundamental change to the streak system - people had, I would imagine, been complaining for some time that having the rewards based solely on kills encouraged folks to ignore objectives - and the addition of a streak set tailored for the support-minded player.

Also approve in principle the idea of prestige actually being useful for more than bragging rights. Personally, though, I would have preferred it being represented as 'service hashes' without any resetting of rank or unlocks (though, as noted, you can still use a token to do so if desired).

After not working for days, I finally (barely) was able to get into Call of Duty Elite on the website. Keep in mind this is the free version (I haven't gotten my Elite code in my game yet), but everyone should sign up for it who plays as you apparently get 2 hours of in-game double XP for signing up and it's free (like bnet).

Aesthetically it's pleasing, although I'm not sure that any of the info is displayed in a practical manner, but hey! It would be awesome if it showed the names of my custom classes lol. The MW3 tab is blank for me since I haven't played, but I can access all of my Blops stats, and then below that are some screens of the primary Elite page, all of which are under the Career tab on the left (none of the others go anywhere yet).

Just got home from Gamestop. By the time I got out of there I could barely see the end of the line, I'd guess they had a total of around 500 people. The whole experience was insane, I don't even know where to begin.

-Saw a dude walking around with a big-ass bag of weed
-They had a drill sergeant there, and if you did 20 pushup you got CoD dog tags
-They had a water balloon throwing contest which no one won
-Towards the end some kiids built a straight up fucking campfire in the sorta gutter on the side of the street using what looked like newspapers, I shit you not. It was cold, but not that cold Jesus Christ
-The first guy who walked out after midnight got the console bundle. He then proceeds to hold it precariously while driving away on a motocycle. As he is driving away hella fast not giving a fuck he gets pulled over by a waiting cop in the parking lot across the street.
-Over the course of the night we received free chick-fil-a coupons, free dominos coupons, flyers, and a MW3 temporary tattoo.
-The guys behind me were hilarious. They were talking about past midnight launches, and at one point they were talking about ODST, and the one guy was like "Yeah, that was the one where you didn't play as the chief...you were like a maverick or something." Then everyone started referring to the Rookie as "The Maverick". Also Battlefield 3 "totally sucks."

I feel like I finally truly experienced Virginia tonight.

Some quick observations:

-You can now set up your Streaks per class, which is neat.

-I'm in agreement with most of the internet; bullet damage seems reallllly high. There's no Stopping Power perk, but it feels like they basically compensated by all guns having it on already. You will kill and die very, very quickly. Not sure how I feel about this either way yet.

-So far I like the maps, but I also agree with the internet that they're surprisingly small. This doesn't really bother me, but as of now in Ground War I haven't seen any huge maps like previous games, which is odd.

I've read comparisons that the damage feels like MW1's hardcore mode, or something.

And to be honest I'm actually fine with that. A step in the right direction, most of the frustration comes from lag induced whackiness if you get the jump on a guy and he still turns around and ends you. If he's got less of a window to do that in then that's an improvement.

As for map size, they've stated they changed the design philosophy to encourage flow but retain verticality, which basically means tighter but less choke points. Do you feel they've accomplished that?

I don't think I've played enough to have an opinion on the second part yet. Some levels yes, some levels seem to have major chokepoints but still a couple of little ways around.

Also I don't really get this one, but it is the best:

Ended up picking this up since my base exchange didn't have the MGS Collection and Gamestop said they weren't getting it for a couple of weeks.

I definitely seem to be doing a lot better in this than past CoD games. Whether that has to do with increased bullet damage or improved networking, I can't be sure. So far I've only had one game pull the old "empty my clip but still get murdered" thing, but that whole game was fairly laggy. I'd grab a dog tag and it would take a second to actually pick it up. (Really digging the new Kill Confirmed mode, btw.)

Played some Survival with a friend tonight and I think in some ways it's even more tense than Zombies. Dogs and Suicide Bombers add to that probably. Although at the same time it seems a lot easier somehow. Funny how that works; it's easier when they have guns than when they have to run up and hit you.

I was planning on waiting until christmas for this, but so far I'm glad I went ahead and bought it.

Played pretty much all day in Ground War.

-I like the maps fine (although there could definetely be some more visual variety), but agree that most of the maps are real small, there's only two that I would consider particularly big, and nothing like blops for example. I don't really mind smaller maps since I usually run and gun, but there should be some more variety in there.

-I think health needs to be buffed slightly. When I have a tactical vest (or whatever they're called) and some dude kills me with a silence PP2900 at mid range with two or three shots to the back, that's a problem. I don't think it's horribly broken, but I'm seeing more and more people bitching about it online, but I don't know really how the majority feels. I think there's a balance they could strike with having it toned down from Blops, but not as low as it is now.

-I like Kill Confirmed, but almost no one plays it properly so my team always loses.

-Quickscoping is ridiculous, and it seems to actually be worse in this game than previous entries. This is largely mitigated by the smaller maps and sightlines, so there's not nearly as many snipers as I've seen in previous games, but I've seen some absolutely ridiculous quickscoping shenanigans.

Overall I do really like it though.

The weapon levelling up system will take me a looooong time to do. It'll be fine. Also stuck on support killstreaks (not that good at killing!). Overall, I like what I see. 2 prestige tokens but never used even one.

All I did since I got the game was play TDM (for like 5 hours, only stopping for workout and dinner). Maybe if we could organize a session that'd be great.

I'm not really feeling many of the maps, to be honest. They all play really cramped, which makes my life difficult considering my preferred style of play* (and my less than ideal ping). As a result, I think the game plays a little more like Black Ops than MW2. I will say that the pointstreaks seem fairly balanced though. It doesn't really remind of me of the MW2 days where a couple minutes into the match, air support shows up, never leaves for the rest of the game, and reaps dozens of kills.

Nice to see that the SCAR-L and the UMP45 are still very good, and I'm getting close to unlocking my good friend, the G36c. Using it a little in the default class, I can tell it is going to be a good one too.

*by "preferred style of play", I mean "slow reaction time and poor gun skills"

Yeah, that's the one. In MW2 it was a super accurate bullet hose, the gun for everyone who had a red tiger G36C in CoD4. This time around (and this is just me having 100 ACR kills and 350 G36C kills), they are more or less interchangeable.

I will say that so far at least on the SMG's and AR's, every time you get a new one it seems to generally be better than the previous one. In past games it always seemed to be all over the place, and often times the best one in class would be an earlier one.

Also for anyone getting or who has gotten Elite, the Elite site/app still seems to be broken, but some people are able to get in. However now people are starting to get it linked on the backend in-game, as myself and a lot of other people are now starting to get the Elite unlocks and bonus xp time reflected. I took a pic, this is the title and Emblem you get for Elite, and you can see the XP in the top right. What I didn't notice until I put the camera away was if you got to the main Barracks screen that has all of your stats, on the very bottom it actually tells you how much double XP time you have left. In this case this was the 2 hours that everyone gets for signing up for Elite, even if it's the free version. As far as I know no Founders stuff is popping up yet though.

Otomedius turned out to be a disappointment. I wasn't expecting the best shmup but I wasn't expecting it to be one of the worst ones I've played in years either.

I also know more people who have traded in MW3 already than I do Black Ops in it's entirety. You are the only person who's completely gung ho about it that I care about playing with, to be quite honest.

Who in the fuck do you play with that has already traded in MW3? I've got 30+ on my list that have played it, which is more than played Black Ops and I don't know anyone who has sold it back. Either that's bullshit or you know a metric fuckton of weird people that I know nothing about.

And I also only care primarily about playing games with my friends, but this is the game everyone is playing so even if I was so inclined there's no real alternative. Aside from you, Omagnus, and 2 or 3 other european folks that you don't know I don't have a single person on my list playing Battlefield (and most of my list either actively hates the game, or otherwise have no interest). I've got 1-2 people who are still hardcore into Reach but that game was ultimately a big disappointment for our group and none of us have any interest at all in going back to that so that's a no-go as well. So MW3 has just become the default XBL game for almost everyone I know due to more of a dearth of other better content than anything else.

Now if you want to talk about something I'm gung-ho about that I would want you to buy, we could have a serious talk about Ultimate MvC3.

Jam it back in, in the dark.
