Theme week time, ladies and germs!

Whimsical Wonderland Week: With Alice in Wonderland hitting screens next week, perhaps we could do a whimsical week with numbers like slapstick songs and tunes that don't take themselves too seriously.

Also, it's about time for some new theme week suggestions. You've got 'em, let's have 'em! Here are the old ideas that we didn't go with, for reference/inclusion in the next theme week voting round:

March of the Intros: Intro/main menu themes can be important for setting the mood of a game, regardless of genre. And they tend to be very short affairs, with some exceptions, so such a week could be an extended 60s week of sorts.

SyFyLis Channel Original Musics: Nominate your most out of this world game tracks with a sci-fi connection. Maybe tie-in with some major sci-fi game/TV series/movie launch.

SotW Unplugged: An acoustic (or faux-acoustic) instrumentation week.

The Anti-Battle: Take the eight lowest scoring tracks in SotW history; Vote on Worst of the Worst with negative points given out.

.38 Doujin Special: Temporarily remove the rule against doujin (fanmade remixes) for a week of OCR-inspired madness.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I can definitely get behind a SotW Unplugged. Or another piano week. I pretty much like the idea of an instrument theme week.

If I were to have my way I'd have a Suikoden theme week ( ::drool:: ) or a h-game music theme week, but otherwise I sadly don't have any good ideas. Maybe a desert music theme week, though that does sound a tad dry...appropriate though for a Southern Hemisphere summer. In any case, I've got a nom (or fifty) for Whimsical Wonderland week. I decided to go with the silly track that always makes me smile over my favourite ever slapstick theme that always makes me chuckle.

Composer: Doors Music Entertainment
Album: Aekanaru Sekai no Owari ni Original Soundtrack "Routine"
Track Title: fun time
Track Number: 10
Year: 2005
Catalog Number: HBMC-022

Here are a couple of theme week suggestions:

Racing Game Week: Because music from racing games rules. This is a fact proven by real science.

If at First You Don't Succeed Week: Nominate something new from an album/game/whatever from which you've nominated something before, but which has yet to place in any week. This game really does have good music, I promise!

I don't have a theme nom at the moment, so here's a normal one:

I can get behind If at First You Don't Succeed week, and already have a Radiata Stories nom I could use (4 nominations and no wins!). People seemed to hate piano week, so let's not do that one again, but SotW Unplugged would still be a treat. I'd also kind of like to see the .38 Doujin Special if for no reason other than I have a fuckton of the stuff lying around after that doujin contest I somehow ran.

As for something new...I'll get back to you.

Did we ever have an anti-SotW week, where you nominate the worst song possible and give points to the worst tracks? I feel like this idea is vaguely familiar; maybe I'm just thinking of 'A' brackets from past BSCs.

Anyway, that's my suggestion. Super Hella Irritating Tracks.

(As for the acronym, use your imagination. I think I copied that gag too.)

Otherwise, put me down for Unplugged, Doujin, and If You Don't Succeed.

Crash ran something like that a while back. He called it APEX, the Audio Punishment EXtravaganza, and it was a full bracketed contest. Think it's in the archives somewhere...

Pretty good week.

(3 points) Freedom Fighters Original Soundtrack - Isabella - Leader of the Resistance: Grrr, I would have nominated this if I had the forethought, but when I was considering it, it was years ago and Freedom Fighters tracks were flooding the airwaves around here. Anyway, I love this track because there's a tender quality to the first third, and when paired against a harder industrial edge it work surprisingly well. Plus, it develops rather nicely over the course of its length.

(2 points) Shirogane no Soleil -Successor of Wyrd- Original Soundtrack - Affection ~One Step Beyond Love~: I'm a sucker for this type of track. Guitarin' like what.

(1 points) Every Extend (Game Rip) - SeeTheLight: Sure, it's cliched techno, but damn if it isn't catchy.

Just missed: The Terminator (Sega CD Red Book Audio) - Taking to the Air; Richard Jacques | Composer - Mass Effect Bonus Track 2 (The Ice Planet)

Jam it back in, in the dark.

3 points - Every Extend (Game Rip) - SeeTheLight
Nothing fancy, but I wanted this game's audio to get some exposure.

2 points - Shirogane no Soleil -Successor of Wyrd- Original Soundtrack - Affection ~One Step Beyond Love~
Groovy feel, even if I don't find it to have a catchy melody.

1 point - Freedom Fighters Original Soundtrack - Isabella - Leader of the Resistance

I've got a theme week idea: how about a week in which we can only nominate tracks released prior to, say, 1995? This doesn't mean it has to be a chiptune week---arranged tracks from before this time would be fine too. It'd be interesting in seeing some VGM fossils unearthed and relative classics revisited. VGM Fossil Week or something, I don't know I'm not good with the names.

An 'If at First You Don't Succeed Week' sounds neat, by the way. I'd say Unplugged > 'If at First...' = my idea, for me at the moment...

-----

Cyber Stadium Series: Base Wars (Game Rip) - In-Game Music A is groovy in an abstract and jumpy kind of way, and features a couple of nice melodic ideas. Sadly it suffers from its lack of development because the track isn't good enough to serve as an effective go-to for entertainment. OK, but nothing too special.

Every Extend (Game Rip) - SeeTheLight is a good, cheap and mildly entertaining electronic romp. Fairly run of the mill considering the genre, and it's tame in the stylistic boundaries. Unadventurous and erring on repetition, but I can't deny I enjoy it.

I like the atmosphere presented in Freedom Fighters Original Soundtrack - Isabella - Leader of the Resistance, and how it tosses between gritty industrial and soothing melancholy. Apart from that, there's nothing that intrigues me nor anything that warrants a future listen. Props for atmosphere, but I could have used something more to grab onto.

Shirogane no Soleil -Successor of Wyrd- Original Soundtrack - Affection ~One Step Beyond Love~ is a breezy acoustic package with an enjoyable instrumental palette. Particularly, the bongos are mouthwatering. What this track lacks in melody it more than makes up for in attitude and style. MANYO, you so classy

THIS DOESN'T MAKE ME CRY LIKE I THOUGHT A HOCKEY ENDING THEME WOULD, WHERE'S THE PATHOS. Regardless, Super Ice Hockey (Game Rip) - Ending is bouncy fun with some jazzy undertones. It doesn't take itself too seriously and is a good bit of fun while it lasts.

The Terminator (Sega CD Red Book Audio) - Taking to the Air is typical Tallarico rockin', what's not to love. It's not a style of music I'll go out of my way to listen to, but whenever it comes along I'll gladly listen. but please stop shredding my face off, Mr. Tallarico

V-RARE SOUND TRACK vol.11 ~ listens with the airplane - My Airplane is a marked difference to the previous 'air' themed track title. The children choir here creates a welcoming sense of warmth and innocence, and the piano backing is effective if a tad sparse (pinnacle of this thing in VGM is that 'Eight Melodies' arrangement). It's not a greatly memorable song, which probably won't help it's case when it comes to the point crunch.

'sup richard jacques. Richard Jacques | Composer - Mass Effect Bonus Track 2 (The Ice Planet) really does remind me of an The Ice Planet, and its luscious synth rolls are absolutely captivating. however NOT LONG ENOUGH

my mill is running out of POINTS

3 points: Shirogane no Soleil -Successor of Wyrd- Original Soundtrack - Affection ~One Step Beyond Love~
2 points: Richard Jacques | Composer - Mass Effect Bonus Track 2 (The Ice Planet)
1 point: Super Ice Hockey (Game Rip) - Ending
4th: The Terminator (Sega CD Red Book Audio) - Taking to the Air
5th: Every Extend (Game Rip) - SeeTheLight
6th: Freedom Fighters Original Soundtrack - Isabella - Leader of the Resistance
7th: V-RARE SOUND TRACK vol.11 ~ listens with the airplane - My Airplane
8th: Cyber Stadium Series: Base Wars (Game Rip) - In-Game Music A

Decent week. No complaints, or any huge applause.

Nice week. Liked just about every track. Hence the somewhat scattershot votes this time around.

(2 points) Shirogane no Soleil -Successor of Wyrd- Original Soundtrack - Affection ~One Step Beyond Love~

(1 point) The Terminator (Sega CD Red Book Audio) - Taking to the Air

(1 point) Freedom Fighters Original Soundtrack - Isabella - Leader of the Resistance

(1 point) Richard Jacques | Composer - Mass Effect Bonus Track 2 (The Ice Planet)
I didn't realise Richard Jacques composed any music for the game.

Here's a nomination for Whimsical week:

Cyber Stadium Series: Base Wars (Game Rip) - In-Game Music A Decent chiptune's got good rhythm if a little lacking in other areas.

Every Extend (Game Rip) - SeeTheLight Electronic beats and not a whole lot else. This stuff might do on the dance floor, but as a stand-alone listening experience it leaves something to be desired.

Freedom Fighters Original Soundtrack - Isabella - Leader of the Resistance Jesper Kyd is always good in a pinch, and the first part of this song has him in a lyrical mode, something he's very good at but doesn't get called on to do often enough. The electronics that get layered over it at the end are more Kyd's MO, but don't mesh well with the beautiful melody.

Shirogane no Soleil -Successor of Wyrd- Original Soundtrack - Affection ~One Step Beyond Love~ I always thought love was one step beyond affection, but whatever. I'm a sucker for acoustic guitar, and this piece has an lazy if amiable attitude to go with the acoustic lixx, but it never seems to nab that extra something that would take it from "pleasant mood piece" to "great listen."

Super Ice Hockey (Game Rip) - Ending Doesn't sound like the end of any ice hockey I've ever experienced, but that doesn't alter how awesome it is. Loved the melody and synth effects and especially the piano lead. Really fantastic, and color me surprised at finding my old pal Hayato Matsuo attached as composer.

The Terminator (Sega CD Red Book Audio) - Taking to the Air It's not necessary that Terminator music sound like Brad Fiedel's famous score or use his theme, but it helps. This sounds like a Rocky training montage, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, just a little jarring.

V-RARE SOUND TRACK vol.11 ~ listens with the airplane - My Airplane This might have done well in JBCSW; the vocal stylings are certainly something you don't hear much around here. I can't say I really liked it, though; the unison singing and backing instruments made it sound a bit Muzak-like at times.

Richard Jacques | Composer - Mass Effect Bonus Track 2 (The Ice Planet) Richard Jacques was responsible for the one piece of music most people remember from Mass Effect, the galaxy map, so naturally a lot of his music went unused and he wasn't brought back for ME2 (though they did re-use a few pieces). This Vangelis-esque piece is loads better than the Noveria song in-game, overflowing with synthy goodness over its admittedly short length.

The Point Spread
The Ice Planet - 3 pts.
Ending - 2 pts.
Isabella - 1 pt.

As for other theme week ideas; FOLLIN WEEK REDUX!!! I've missed the first and I'd personally be interested in participating in one. Or, we could do a similar theme for any other underrated composer. (i.e. David Wise)

Not exactly. It's what I'd call, in very simplistic terms, "silly" music, like quirky, off-kilter carnival tunes. Cute music doesn't necessarily fit the bill because ultimately, it needs to be quite comical.

Some examples:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCHZ_...eature=related

YouTube - Enchanted Folk and the School of Wizardry Trailer

YouTube - Zifnab appearance (past the 5 second mark)

YouTube - Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg OST Music: Lullaby Of Snow Mountain
