Opoona
This was composed by Hitoshi Sakimoto, and it is one of the best soundtracks I’ve heard from him. There's a lot of variety in musical style here. Also, contrary to the cartoony style of the game, there are a lot of great soft, fantastical, and somber tracks that make use of many types of instruments and samples. I hope this gets a soundtrack release.
How ya doing, buddy?

Someone over at Soundtrack Central pointed out that the game did extremely poorly over in Japan; I hope that doesn't torpedo any album plans (Hell, Deltora Quest got the full three-disc treatment!). I'd also like to see who wrote which tracks.
Still, the music is great stuff. Lots of electronics compared to the last few Basiscape projects, with a fabulous main theme and a ton of personality. I highly recommend the rip. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
So Basiscape did work on this as a team? That would explain things. I thought, for instance, op02_04 sounded a lot like a Namiki track.
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

agreed, Opona is one of Sakimoto's (and basiscape's) score. The main theme is exceptionally beautiful. One of the best I listen since FFTA2. I hope they will release an OST, it's sad the game didn't sell well. But who knows, maybe the english version will get better reception.

It'd be cool if we could do an interview. Are there music samples available anywhere other than through game clips?
I was speaking idiomatically. |
There is a full rip available. I'll upload later if I find the time, but could someone else try to beat me to it? I'm getting ready to head to work now and I'm not really sure if I'll have the time until later tomorrow.
What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
I have the rip as well. I have some time on my hands, so I'll try a re-upload (to save bandwidth on the site I got it from originally).
The fact that it's a Basiscape score is one of the reasons I want a release, so I can see who wrote which tracks (they've always been rather good at doing that). I'm not familiar enough with the other composers' styles to be able to tell what they did by ear. EDIT: Opoona Gamerip Part 1 Opoona Gamerip Part 2 FELIPE NO

Thanks. This stuff is great.

Thanks orion_mk3. This sounds great!

What's all this?

Unfortunate name, but great soundtrack! Made me want to fire up VS and FFT more than once.
There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Fantastic music, tragic that it isn't being officially released anytime soon.
Since the game is out tomorrow, will it be possible to compile a more accurate tracklist for the rip? (putting the music in some kind of in-game order) This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |

Fare enough.
I have no idea if Opoona will reach UK, otherwise I'd happily do it (as we as the case if i had a Wii) :/ I was speaking idiomatically. |
The game and the soundtrack are both amazing. I'm surprised by how much fun it is.
To tease you guys, we got an interview with Sakimoto-san specifically about his work on Opoona. Be sure to check the site in the coming days for it. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |

That's good to know Arcubalis. I look forward to reading the interview. I was interested in playing the game myself but haven't gotten around to picking it up. The music is absolutely beautiful though.
FELIPE NO |
Arcubalis, I love you. And you're actually one of the few persons who doesn't ask predictable and generic questions.
What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
I think it's a matter of passion. A lot of journalists who cover this stuff are gamers but not fans of game music, and they get stuck covering composers without being particularly interested or informed. I've always enjoyed game music, and having written for some general gaming audiences writing game reviews, I learned there's nothing I'd rather be doing than writing about game audio. I have a lot of surprises in store for you guys. I hope you caught the Norihiko Hibino (Metal Gear Solid), Masafumi Takada (Killer7, No More Heroes), and Nobuo Uematsu interviews recently! Jam it back in, in the dark. |
Great news to hear, Arcubalis.
I picked up the game yesterday myself, but haven't started it yet. Not sure when I can start, either, so I'm not sure if I can be much help on the renaming front. But in either case, how do we want to do this? I was of the idea that once we discover what rip track goes where, we can post a renaming string, something like this: ren "cp03.brstm.mp3" "99 I Really ADORE This Track.mp3" ...that's just an example. But really, I'd be extremely interested to find out where exactly that lovely tune plays. In the end, there should be enough material to put together into one big batch file. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
I wish I had been doing that. It sort of slipped my mind, and I'm already far along in the game. I figure it would be like, "Battle," "Boss Battle," "Tokione 1," "Tokione 2," etc. The tracks are actually in clumps of where they appear so it shouldn't be so bad.
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
WHEW...at long last, I think my task is complete!
On a side note, those who have been enjoying the gamerip have noticed that there are two versions of several tracks. I'll be denoting the second versions as "alternate takes" with a 900-numbering system. Thanks!
I've just updated the post with more track names. I'll do it there from now on, and just make new posts with specific questions about the tracks. Speaking of which...has anyone found a use for the op01 tracks? I don't recall coming across them in Tokione yet. It's been a busy week, so I haven't spent as much time with the game as I'd like. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
The op01 tracks were used in the game's trailer (which isn't to say that they don't appear in the game too, of course). I'd say they sound like a concert version of the main theme, which is woven throughout many of the tracks.
Along with Bonbon Battle 1, it's the most "traditional" Sakimoto piece in the rip, which may indicate that those are the only tracks he wrote (with the others being handled by other Basiscape members). That's pure speculation on my part, of course. Keep up the good work! Incidentally, would you recommend the game? I've heard mixed things but I'm considering buying a Wii and a few games. FELIPE NO |
As much as I think I would recommend it, I'd also suggest a rental...so that the player can understand the old-school gameplay, the job system, and the wonders of getting lost in large 3-D dome cities.
If it hadn't been for the music, I'm not sure how quickly I would have found out about this game. But now playing it, I certainly don't regret it. Additional Spam: No new work on the track listing, but I see that Arcubalis has delivered on his promise! Music 4 Games -- The Future of Rock n' Roll & Interactive Entertainment. Est. 1999. Of note...
