Part of a $99 cable/phone/internet deal.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I see now one's beat my near 20000Kbps download speeds. Still I only get those speeds when downloading a 1-2MB patch or something else stupidly small. I'd be willing to get even 3000Kbps if my connection had a synchronous upload/download bandwidth.

I'm curious to see how someone with 56K would fare with this speed test.

Probably around 56kbps down.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Probably around 56kbps down.
In reality that's rarely the case, with packet compression boosting alleged bandwidth (up to 2-3x more in some cases) and line conditions doing the opposite, it can be hard to know for sure what down/upstream speeds you'll get.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

University FTW, but there is a downside to this. I can upload only 1Gb every 24 hours, and during business hours, practically all bandwidth is taken from the dorms to the other buildings of the university.

EDIT: Auckland for kicks.

This isn't really right though. i usually get more like 800KB/s on upload and download.

The state of broadband in the UK is absolutely abysmal. The speed of a DSL connection is greatly dependent on your distance from the central exchange. My exchange is quite far away and this is usually the fastest I get, and it fluctuates between this and 400 kbps quite often. Since BT have announced that they are not planning on upgrading their copper infrastructure or replacing it with fibre optics, as long as I am on this copper line I won't get anything faster. Even with ADSL2+, the estimated top speed will only be around 10 mbps. (Which by then, everyone else will have 100 mbps FTTH.)

The problem is that it's difficult to complain, since the speeds quoted are always "up to". So if you do not get the speed, all customer service will say is "it's your copper cable", which is BT's issue and not theirs. However, BT do set a "minimum threshold" where if speeds fall below that, they will take action; for me it's set at 1000 kbps. Domino, in your case you should definitely take action.

Maybe it's time to switch to NTL cable. Most people that I know of are on the 10 mbps service, and they deliver the speed people pay for (usually). As long as if you don't mind horrible customer service, as with most large companies.

Edit: Here's my speed test.

That's not crap. A lot of people would kill for that upload speed. It took me forever to acquire an ISP in my area that has a higher upload than 256kbps!

I know. Just forgot to capitalize the B, but you got what i meant. I usually do get 800 Kilobytes per second in both directions. The test said 650 and 400... My upload is definitely at least 800KB/s because bittorrent is doing that right now

How ya doing, buddy?

I managed to get onto my parents PC downstairs, not bad for a 2meg connection.

And another one of mine, to show how bad it really is.

I will be changing ISP as soon as I can, I can barely surf the net with these speeds.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Taken into account my upload speed at my prior apartment used to be nearly three times that, it's crap. I remember sending files to Skill's for kicks upwards of 300 KB/s. Our complex must have rented a pipe from the cable company or something (our rent was all inclusive) and they just didn't cap it for whatever reason.

that'd be the connection that comes along with my phone service, there are like 2 other ISPs here but they are pretty much worse, it's actually slightly faster(1024 down up I can't remember) but the closest server I can choose is in curacao and I get really crappier speeds with that one, Guatemala doesn't like me either. I pay about 20$ or 25$ but I guess it is decent.

Comcast's lowend FiOS connection. I've had it for about two months now. I've got some odd issues using their provided router I never got around to resolving, but I like it.

As soon as I get my OWN place (instead of "a place I rent from a guy"), I'll be investigating broadband options more thoroughly.
