Guilty Pleasure Movies
We all have them. Those movies that we KNOW suck ass, but we love them to death anyway. I have a soft spot for mindless, retarded action films. Among the top of those are...
Live Free or Die Hard I know certain neckbeards and Mexicans on GFF hate this movie, but hell, I enjoyed it. Seeing a ballsy action film with very little CG in a world where films like 300 and Transformers run amok was refreshing to say the least. Commando I don't know what was more badass: Arnold throwing a phone booth while a guy was already in it, or the very first shot of Arnold in the film, with him carrying a fucking TREE on one of his rippling shoulders. Good lord, this man is awesome. Ghost Rider It's like my friend Nick said... "It's a fucking flaming skeleton on a motorcycle. If you go into Ghost Rider expecting anything other than Ghost Riding, you've missed the point completely." I'm sure I'll think of more, but what are some of your favorite shit films? Jam it back in, in the dark. |
That one is easy for me. Hero. Riding on the coattails of the wildly successful and far superior Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Hero somehow managed to astonish me even though it was completely formulaic, anti-climactic and with more CGI than any "martial arts" flick should ever be allowed to use. But I'll be goddamned if it wasn't one of the most beautifully shot and most wonderfully color-complimented movies I've ever seen in my life.
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is also another one that I enjoyed but you can tack on cliché character development and a horribly played-out story to the list of flaws. However, I have yet to see such an assault on the visual sense as that movie was. Throughly mind-blowing visuals and spectacularly outlandish (albeit completely impossible) sword fights make this one of the best-looking films I've ever seen. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Commando is the patron saint of all "Lets get drunk and watch a movie" notions.
"LET OFF SOME STEAM". Probably my all-time fav is Slipstream. It was a gigantic sci-fi wanna-be blockbuster that was one part Silent Running to two parts Blade Runner. It had a big cast with two Academy Award Winners, a high energy score - and it absolutely SUCKS BALLS. I mean, look at the "amazing climax of the movie" where Mark Hamill faces Muldoon from Jurassic Park.
The other movie is The Prophecy - which is Gregory "Highlander" Widen's redux of Paradise Lost, more or less. Its actually a well-written movie but the execution is ... less so. However, it has Viggo Mortenson playing Satan in the last 20 minutes which is so fantastic it needs to be seen to be believed.
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
To be honest I really enjoy crap films sometimes and find that no-brain nonsense has a worthy place in a film catalogue. As such there's probably a boat load of films I own that would fall under what you would call guilty pleasures. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
I was speaking idiomatically. |
I'm a big fan of guilty pleasure movies such as Zardoz, see the avatar and signature combo.
Probably my all time favorite movie of the sort is Action Jackson starring Carl Weathers of Predator and Arrested Development fame. It's about this cop who doesn't take shit from anyone and investigates a powerful car mogul, Craig T. Nelson of Coach and Incredibles fame. It all cumulates to a showdowm between Jackson and the villian in the villian's mansion. Jackson has extraordinary powers such as the ability to flip over speeding taxis and drive expensive sports cars onto a flight of stairs that have right angles. Other favorites of mine are Bloodsport, The Last Dragon, Showdown in Little Tokyo, Dead Heat, Remo Williams, Roadhouse, Cobra, Over the Top, Ninja III: The Domination and Shark Attack III: Megladon as well as many others. Russ Meyer films.

Hmmn....let's see...
Super Mario Bros. Yes I know it was so horribly awful. Like it because it's so sad and funny on how they interpreted the game to Hollywood movie disaster. I love Die Hard movies. Don't know why would someone not like DH movies. Have a few others but can't think of them right now.... What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
Ya know the movie Heavyweights, A disney movie where a bunch of overweight kids go to a fat camp where an insane weight master comes in to destroy the kids lives by making them healthy?
That movie is badass. I remember watching it almost everyday when i was 8 during that years summer. I was a badass! Jam it back in, in the dark. |
Uwe Boll----haha I'm just yankin' yer chain there.
My biggest GUILTY PLEASURE MOVIE is probably You've Got Mail. You know, that crappy movie with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. It's pretty bad, but it's the most feel-good, comforting movie I've ever seen. The plot is sweet and the romantic aspect is kinda <3. A good movie to discuss at the pub with your mates, it is! And it was interesting that the first time I watched High School Musical I liked it. The second time I watched it, I found it absolutely repulsive. Huh. (Anybody who posts Pledge This! or Bottoms Up will suffer a slow and very painful death (by watching the movie 4x in succession ya)) There's nowhere I can't reach.

FF : Spirits Within & Waterworld
I'm not very good at telling a movie is good or not. I just know what I like BUT these two are probably the movies that got me in most trouble with friends and family......They absolutely HATE it. I REALLY like it! For Spirits Within... I would pause it a certain scenes...just to look at the details. These movies also were BIG budget movies that didn't earn(.) Another one of my favs is Equilibrium..but I don't think a lot of people hated it. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. from the makers of Death Note!! Bakuman. Am happy..because AgitoXIII and Parasite Eve 3 is a comin to the PSP!! |
While we're on the topic of Kevin Costner...
The Postman!!! This movie pretty much raised the bar for how epic a bomb could be. My soft spot for post-apocalyptic films keeps me from changing the channel though. I find it funny that Waterworld was followed by another epic monstrosity with another epic budget. I've also got to mention Deep Blue Sea, which I'm definitely watched more than a couple of times for shits and giggles. How could anyone not like a movie with super-intelligent oversized sharks, LL Cool J, and Michael Rapaport. I usually put on really good "bad movies" when I'm practicing scales and shit on guitar/bass. Nothing takes the boredom out of repetitive exercises better than a movie like Cliffhanger, or Demolition Man or Deep Impact......or even The Fifth Element. I would have mentioned the Back to the Future trilogy, but I hold no guilt in enjoying those movies. They just rule. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body?

How ya doing, buddy? |
^ Deep Blue Sea was a fantastic flick. I was always a sucker for killer animal movies (though Anaconda and Lake Placid was awful...)
My guilty pleasure flicks consist of the Friday the 13th serie (ignoring the awful Jason X). Gotta love those moments when Jason just shambles through a children's summer camp and slaughters horny teenages. It is great for a good laugh. Freddy v. Jason was just incredible for me. Spoiler:
