You can load a Live CD of Linux/Windows onto a USB flash drive, or bust out hiren's boot disk on USB flash drive. This all assumes your laptop can boot from usb (which I'm assuming this is a netbook, since that is the only brand of laptop that would have usb ports without a cd rom).

All else fails, go 'rent' a portable usb cd-rom drive from a local electronics store. By rent, I mean buy it, use it for your purposes, then return it because 'it wasn't what you were looking for'.

Jam it back in, in the dark.
