According to Son's Phil Harrison, there's no difference between the to models. Interesting:

Quote:
Following announcements that Sony plans to launch two versions of the PS3, Phil Harrison has denied reports that the 20GB model will feature lower technical specs than the 60GB version.

"What we should be clear about is that the functionality is identical in both machines. There is no difference in what the machine does," he told BBC News.

Confusion arose after Sony Japan issued a spec sheet which appeared to indicate that the 20GB PS3 would not feature Wi-Fi, HDMI output or inputs for data storage cards. But according to Harrison, both versions will support high definition output: "It's just that the technical method of extracting audio and video from the devices is slightly different."

He went on to defend Sony's decision to launch two versions of the console by highlighting the importance of consumer choice. "Some people might be interested in the PS3 primarily and exclusively as a games system, whereas other users might look at it as a multimedia hub in the home, which is games and music and movies and other digital content." Harrison said that he personally would purchase the 60GB model.

The PS3 will launch worldwide this November - a year after the arrival of the Xbox 360. At Microsoft's pre-E3 press conference Bill Gates said the company expects to have sold 10 million consoles by then, giving it a healthy head start over Sony. But Harrison is not convinced, stating: "I doubt they will achieve that."

He is also doubtful that Microsoft will be able secure a position as market leader once Sony's new console arrives: "I think the clear advantages of the PS3 will mean that this product is very well accepted in the marketplace. We have a great brand and fantastically loyal consumers."

The PS3 will launch in Japan on November 11 and the US and Europe on November 17, priced at EURO 499 for the 20GB version and EURO 599 for the 60GB model.

OF COURSE YOU WOULD, YOU'RE A FILTHY FUCKING RICH SCE STUDIOS PRESIDENT

The damn thing is a beast of a machine, but €599 makes me weep so badly. Knowing the price won't drop here for a looong time doubly so.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

I would buy it, but first I simply need to rob from many old granma's and sell my earthly belongings only to find out I need those said belongings to make the damn console work >=|

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Any person would, provided they have an extra $600 USD just lying on their coffee table come happy day.

So is he saying that the $500 model will have Wifi?

Doesn't matter though, I'll still get the $600 model.

Some people are acting like you need spare 600 dollar change to buy it, just fucking work for it and dont be lazy. If you have a job and only have enough for bills I understand but for other people just get off your ass and get a job it's not that hard especially with how much time you left. This should be easiest for the younger people who dont have bills and still live at home.

Well, most of the people, including myself, think that shelling 600$ hard-earned bucks for a system that hasn't really shown it's potential is a bit too much.

I think its showed a pretty good amount of potential at E3 already specially with it being playable and all the gameplay footages released.

What gameplay footage? Naughty Dogs' Action/Adventure title and what else was showed that looked like 'gameplay' footage?

Heavenly Sword and PS3 Sonic were definitely playable. There's even a youtube video of the PS3 Sonic freezing completely.

Why not? It's about perceived value. If the consumer is willing to pay $300 for an MP3 player, which costs twice as much as the next MP3 player which has the same capabilities, why wouldn't a game system with this generations best graphics, most features and (so far) highest volume of AAA (in terms of production value) games not sell for twice as much as say the Wii? It's a completely valid comparison to show the mindset of the consumer. The iPod completely dominates their market even with its much higher cost of alternatives because people believe it is worth the extra cost. Why can't the PS3 enjoy the same situation?

Maybe my post seems like I'm only comparing the devices in monatary value, but the idea was like Cetra said. An iPod is, as said, only an mp3-player. Only recently is it possible to play movies and watch pictures on it. Still, I find $300 for an electronic product that can only do those things damn expensive. Hell, a PSP is comparitavly priced and you can even play games on it (although it doesn't have a harddisk so it's a tradeoff). Yes it is portable but like Cetra said: there are a lot of other players that are cheaper and offer the same functionality, allthought I agree technically iPod is one of the best on the market.

I think the best thing I can say is this: I find $600 for a PS3 a lot more value for my money than $300 for an iPod.

Honestly, this is obviously JUST me or something, but the $200 difference between the 360 and the PS3 is like 2 1/2 days of work. Maybe 3. If you're lazy. If you're so strapped for cash that you really CANNOT afford that extra couple days of work for something that will provide you with two high tech items (new game console / BlueRay player), then maybe you shouldn't be spending your money on games in the first place.

Dare I say that in the long run, today $200 isn't really a lot of money? I mean, this shit dosen't go away in a month. It'll stick around for a while. You'll play it. You'll get your moneys worth. I know that I will anyways...

Are all of you people actually planning on buying a PS3 at launch? Especially after the problems that Sony's supposedly had with their first generation products?

Or are you just really arguing for the sake of arguing.

I do not plan on buying any launch system ever again. I learned my lesson the hard way with the PS2 launch. Launch systems will always be somewhat buggy and are more likely to break faster, plus there's the hastle of actually obtaining one at launch which is just a crazy fiasco durring the holiday season. I plan on waiting until MGS4 comes out to get one. Plus Sony could pull a Microsoft and redo the core chip in later models.

I'll get the $499 version if it has Wifi and PS2 memory card slots. I could care less about HD outputs at the moment.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I am getting a Wii at launch, not PS3. But that's mostly because of the launch lineup. As soon as MGS4 or FF13 hits the market, I'll get a PS3 at the $600 price point if I have to.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

You need a $700 model for that.

By the way, any big media sites brought up the fact that Sony said they will not pull a Microsoft by releasing the console in 2 packs and now they are doing JUST THAT?

How ya doing, buddy?

To avoid disaster, i'll wait and buy the PS3 a few months after it's release.
I watched the whole conference yesterday and i'm pretty impressed. i think this system can revolutionize gaming and the future of home entertainment. a system that can hold and play music, send videos, download and play games all for either $499 or $599... where do i sign up?

No, not at lauch, although I would if I had the money. But that goes to Final Fantasy XII, VP2: Silmeria, Tales of the Abyss and Dirge of Cerberus which all come out around the time the PS3 launches.

Seriously, could fall be any better?
