Best j-metal band
i hope that's the right place to put this thread.
i'm searching for japanese bands, and i listem a few ones, so i'll like to know your opinion about the best japanese metal bands, few free to put how many you want, i think not all the bands i listen are j-metal, but j-rock, but whatever, just put the band genere for me to know, here's my list... 1 - Dir en Grey 2 - X-Japan 3 - Malice Mizer 4 - Raphael 5 - Moi dix Mois 6 - Gazette Thanks everybody Jam it back in, in the dark.
i'm Alpha and Omega...
the beginning and the end... the first and the last. |
Well, first I'd have to point out Acid Mothers Temple and all of their associated projects. Some brilliant, psychedelic, and heavy as fuck stuff.
Besides them, the only two acts that immediately come to mind which aren't insanely experimental are the Boredoms, a noise-rock outfit, and Guitar Wolf, who I'd be pretty surprised if you hadn't at least heard of already if you're into Japanese rock music. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Metalucifer and Loudness.
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
For me it would be X-Japan & Dir en Grey...

Concerto Moon is power metal and has great stuff.
I was speaking idiomatically. |
I would barely even call DeG metal, same with Gazette and MdM while I'm at it (why they have a space on MA listing them as doom metal I'll never know.) But yeah, I realise you're not really listing metal bands anyways. Just thought I'd say.
Anywho, Sigh takes top prize in my mind. Very talented and incredibly different from just about any band out there. The Engrish is quite terrible, but the range in music and dynamics of each song are great. "Hail Horror Hail" and "Imaginary Sonicscape" being their best works. Next would be Boris, with their latest effort alongside Sunn O))) being simply amazing. Assuming you like drone that is... But yeah, Concerto Moon is pretty good too. X-Japan has been played out and only good for "lol this started a whole shitty genre." What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
I don't know about best, but I liked Intestine Baalism, which is a melodic death metal act. I'm not sure if Zeni Geva counts, but I'll throw their name out anyway because their music is so interesting.
And Vampiro, I liked Sigh too, but I can't seem to be able to get into their more recent albums... FELIPE NO |
Sex Machineguns. Hands down.
What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
Don't know if I'd call Moi dix Mois metal, either, but their latest album (Beyond the Gate) is some pretty heavy stuff. It's because many band members were replaced prior to this album's release, so the band is hardly MdM anymore, but Mana is still a member of the group (which, I suppose, is reason enough for keeping the name the same).
There's a pretty obscure band called Phantasmagoria that has a few heavy songs, from what I've listened to. It's good stuff, if you can dig up any of their tracks... I've had a pretty hard time finding their music myself, and even then most of it is in terrible quality. :x How ya doing, buddy? |

As of lately, the band Dir en grey has definitely become more metal than they ever have. Their recent single infact resembles Metalcore with some Thrash involved. It's quite awesome. That being said, they are definitely my favorite metal/hard rock band from there. Another band I love is called Galneryus. They're a power metal band, and yes..they can be cheesy at times, but their music is amazing. Their guitarist is young, but DAMN can he play.
Some of the other bands mentioned here I wouldn't card...metal either [Gazette, Malice Mizer]. They have METAL songs, but they're not a metal band by any means I think. There's another band I dont listen to, but I do like them. Blood Stain Child. I had an album of theirs and I thought it was rather nice, but you can tell they're influenced by Children of Bodom. Hehe. Most amazing jew boots |
X-Japan all the way.
I was speaking idiomatically. |
I really like X-Japan, but there are a few songs by other bands that I don't remember the names to.

I would recommend the Mad Capsule Markets who are my favourite band. They are a great Techno/Punk/Hip Hop/Metal/Drum and Bass band. Yes, they do sound like that. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
Thanks everybody, i'll try everything you recomend

Sabbat is real J-metal actually its J-black metal (yes it exist)
their guitar riffs are top notch but the lyrics uhh... can barely hear them X-Japan,Sadie,moi dix mois and Dir en grey (six ugly and current) are really good metal i think if they didn't make the pv for Agitated Screams of Maggots so insane it would get played on Mtv2 There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Since when has Dir En Grey ever been anywhere close to metal?
I still need to hear Sabbat (Jpn). :hide: This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
six Ugly and beyond. They've been becoming more and more metal.
I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
Yeah, they're more "nu-metal" and metalcore now. It started back with Vulgar and has become more and more apparent.

While I enjoy their music quite a lot, I don't really listen to them when my ears thirst for metal. I guess early X Japan or some stuff by the Konami Kukeiha Club come quite close though.
What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
Konami Kukeiha Club are a lot more hard rock than metal *shrugs*
FELIPE NO |
I disagree with that comment on nu-metal, because I feel that their vocalist at least gives a genuine feeling of fury and anger, where as most nu-metal vocalists are pretty whiney and talk about 'hate' [aka Jon Davis] but not in a real sense, but just to get a shock feel for it. I mean, I know some of their songs are nu-metal esque, but I don't think nu-metal is bad...if done right. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
Uh oh, I've seen that one before: Someone wants to talk about Japanese metal and 20 posts later it's that lame old "are Dir en grey (still) this or that" discussion all over again, one of my all-time-favorites next to "did Genesis suck after Gabriel" and "where Metallica right to sue Napster". We'll be lucky if we get over it before page three.
