New Feature: ChocoPager! (Beta)

ChocoPager instant messaging system for GFF members. Users can exchange quick messages with each other. Unlike the regular private messaging system, the message appears directly on screen and can be replied to or X'ed away immediately.

ChocoPager uses AJAX techology so that data can be received on the fly and no page reloading needs to be done when messages are received. ChocoPager does not replace the private message system
which is used more like email when constructing longer messages or for more formal ones that need some kind of send/reply logging feature.

Sending messages with ChocoPager:
You can send messages by going to a user's profile and choosing send Pager message or by opening the ChocoPager interface via the quicklinks navigation bar.




Receiving messages with ChocoPager:
Messages are received automatically whenever a page is loaded or every 90 seconds if you are on the same page.

The ChocoPager Panel:
When you access the ChocoPager panel via the Quick Links menu, you can access the other pages within the panel by clicking the link on top (see screenshot below).



You can set buddy lists/ignore lists that are unique to ChocoPager and you can see your old messages.

ChocoPager Options:
You can access the ChocoPanel options page by going into User CP > Modify User Options.


If you don't like ChocoPager, you can disable it or only allow members from your pager buddylist to send you messages. You can also enable sounds to play whenever a message is received. You might need the quicktime plugin for that.

ChocoPager is still being tested and worked out. It might be disabled permanently if it doesn't seem like a good idea. Administrators can ban individual users from using the system completely if there is abuse. As this uses AJAX, there might be some bugs depending on the browser so post them if you run into any.

I like this very much. I just don't like the bug I keep encountering when responding to pages while viewing a thread. It makes it so I have to type my message out again. >_<

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

That problem hasn't happened to me yet. I've sent and received about 10 pages already, and still nothing.

I'm gonna go on the record as saying I really like this feature. Especially because it's not stretching the top box anymore AND there's a reply feature.

Just gonna check if that typo's disappered yet...

scotty, the box doesn't stretch for images, and it's not really all that big, so tubgirl would have to be shrunken really small. :/

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but only one page shows up on screen at a time, right?

Since my thread got me some hate in chat, I'll just throw out some ideas. (Ideas other than 'this seems like a useless feature')

-You can't message people who appear offline, but are actually online. However, they can send out messages themselves.

-Can you disable the system so that new people with less than 15 or 20 posts can't use it? Seems like a good call to prevent spam.

-Disable images and smilies. (Trust me on this).

-Blah had a good idea of merging the PM and paging systems. If someone paged me, and my pager was turned off, could I get it as a PM? Less obnoxious and lets the system still work even if some people have it disabled.

Colonel offers some good suggestions. I'm in support of them, especially the "no n00bs spam prevention" idea. The last one he suggested sounds like an excellent idea too.

Using Firefox 1.5.0.3 and someone sent me a pager message while I was typing this reply. No ill effects.

Edit: I submitted it only after I closed the pager box.

This is pretty neat! From earlier posts, it seems that images are allowed. Is there a way to allow users to decide whether or not he or she wants to disable them?

I haven't tested it elwe, but possibly if you disable images/smilies via the control panel, it might work the same way. Not sure though.

The bug where users had trouble replying to messages while browsing a thread only applied to admins/mods. It should be fixed now!

As with images, I believe it doesn't accept vBcode just smilies so you don't need to worry about malicious content.

The pager is only supposed to be for quick, online contact, kinda like IM or SMS so that's why it's for online users only.

I don't want smilies to go away... Maybe limit them to some extent. But I can see why :bigmiu: in pages would start to get annoying.
