Computer Crashing

I'm keep getting this error message prolly once a week for some reason. Can anyone help figure out what is causing it?

For those who can't read it, it says...

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacture for any Windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup options, and then select Safe Mode.

Technical INformation:

*** STOP: 0x000000001 (0x0000000C, 0x000000002, 0x00000000, 0xAA6A6F21)

*** portcls.sys - Address AA6A6F21 base at AA6A6000, DataStamp 40574e...

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete
Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Probably because of my trojan.

Seriously, it can be:

* Driver conflict (re-install all drivers)
* Hardware conflict (something broke)

How do I know which driver/hardware?

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Try checking for new versions of all your drivers. A bit tedious, but there's a good chance that'll fix it.

When does the error show up? When you were online, gaming, or when the computer is just idle?

Like Roph said, check for updates on any new components that you've recently installed.

If that doesn't sovle things, it's likely a hardware problem, which is tougher to identify. Common advice seems to be stripping out unnecessary components until it's bare-bones, then installing a device at a time and testing it to see if it crashes.

I was speaking idiomatically.

I did a little searching and that sys file is most likely from your sound card. Reinstall your sound card drivers and that should fix things.

I use my laptop for mostly internet and IMing. Maybe a few multimedia things here or there, but mostly just net. All times it has happened I've just been IMing and here it comes up.

I've researched it too. Most incidents were with people playing games and they have to disable something to play it otherwise there computer gets the bsod.
