Gamingforce Hamachi Network

First of all, I don't know where to put this, since it's such an odd topic. It's up to you mods to decide where this thread should reside.

In case you don't know yet, Hamachi is the new "thing" in P2P networking. It's not a filesharing client, but rather lets you set up a zero-configuration VPN (a virtual, private network).

Get Hamachi for Windows and Linux here.

Hamachi was primarily designed with gaming in mind, so playing LAN-games over the Hamachi tunneling software is child's play. It comes with a quick tutorial, an instant messaging client and a network shares browser (yes, you can view other people's network shares over the internet).

After testing this software for a while, the idea of setting up a GFF-exclusive Hamachi-network crossed my mind and it might very well be an alternative to FTPs, P2P and Direct Connect, because it directly accesses shares on your computer. Messaging and network traffic is encrypted with a 256-bit AES key, which is probably the latest in encryption technology.

I've set up a testing network for GFF, so if you wish to join, share your stuff and play games, connect to Gamingforce.

The spoiler reveals the network's password:

Spoiler:
supersecret

Looking forward to seeing you. Please use your GFF nick as a username for this network.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I think you should use a different password. That has to be one of the easier bruteforce attempts.

If somebody is willing to bruteforce the password, it's fine with me. You can always protect your network shares with user accounts. And it's not like somebody on the VPN can do more harm to your computer than over the internet.

Hell, I would even make the network public if I could. That kinda defeats the point of Hamachi, though. So, who's in?

We might as well play some LAN games over Hamachi sometime.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Awesome. I'll have to try this out.
The fact that this has a Linux client is even better.

I would be the happiest guy alive if someone would be willing to play a game of Command & Conquer (the original!) with me.

I was just wondering if a Hamachi network would be accessible even with the computer creating it being offline.

Yeah the computer that created the network doesn't need to be online for the network to work.

I think you have the power to kick / ban people though.

[edit] You can right click on members in the network and assign labels to them. So for instace you could right click on me and label me "Roph".

I take it you're VicViper, Rock?

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Yup, I'm VicViper. I should change that, though ...

Good to know that the network will be available in my absence.

Why are people hesitant to join Hamachi? I've been running the network since I created the thread and so far only 4 people have taken a short peek into the new technology.

This could very well be an alternative, if not a replacement for all the FTPs and file sharing needs of GFF. Hamachi offers secure transfers, instant messaging and access to a private LAN for all your GFF community needs (like sharing, gaming and chatting).

I'd like to make this a bit more 'official', but I need the help of our administrators and moderators in doing so. I feel this thread just doesn't get enough attention from the community, so please go out and spread the word.

How ya doing, buddy?

your intention isn't bad at all, but not everyone has to join a single hamachi network to do all of that... I guess most people create their own networks use it for what they need and leave it at that. The making of a single "official" hamachi network isn't such a great idea it will probably become a mess in a short time.

I joined it, for just because.

You never know, I might need to send/get files and the person who has it might be on Hamachi.

I mostly joined just because I like Hamachi.

I'm going to host an original Diablo (1!) game (1.09) on LAN now. If you feel like bashing some zombies, feel free to join the fray. Remember you need the SPX/IPX protocol installed for your virtual Hamachi network adapter.

I've tried to join the network "Gamingforce" but hamachi is coming back saying that the network does not exist. It'd be great to play some classics on hamachi, such as Command and Conquer and Red Alert. Those were brilliant games that I used to enjoy in a 'net cafe but I've missed playing against real people, and I've never really got them to work online.

Perhaps this thread would get more attention if it was in the Multiplayer Arena forum?

Yeah, I deleted it a week ago since there didn't seem to be much interest or activity. Feel free to create a new Hamachi network with the same name and/or password if you wish.

Besides, I was having a lot of trouble with network shares. Diablo doesn't seem to work over Hamachi, even with the IPX/SPX protocol installed, though. Haven't tried Command & Conquer, but I'll try again next week. If you're still interested in a match, be sure to PM me.

spikeh is right, though. This should probably go to the Multiplayer Arena.

Hamachi is awesome. It's giving life back to a whole armada of old LAN only games.

If anyone wants to have a game of Red Alert 2 I'm up for it (Haven't played in a while though so I may be a bit slow.)

But mainly if you want to play Deadlock - Planetary Conquest definatly email me for a game. Thats a classic I've just reinstalled, awesome.

I'll try this thing out. I just installed it on my main Windows machine for now. I disabled Windows File Sharing in the install application (can I change this later).

Anyway, I had no problem connecting to the Gamingforce network. Pretty cool.

If I were to do some file sharing, do I get some sort of notification when someone starts reading files?

As for gaming, I probably won't be up for it until some point next week.

If anyone is up for a Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn (the original) game via Hamachi, please contact me via PN. I'd love to test this out.

Oh and the Gamingforce networks seems to have grown considerably since I checked last time ... ;-)

Nobody online now, though. :-(

I've been on since I've had it, and I was the only one one for a while; so I left. I'm back on now. But yeah, the number of users has over double in the last 3 days alone. I suppose the file sharing hasn't been used much yet, but I'm interested in what speeds people can get from me. I'm sharing some music and videos.
