Fantasy set in Victorian England; the "Fairy Doctor" Lydia Carlton meets a young nobleman(?) bad-boy who bills himself as the "Blue Knight" and the "Earl of Hy-Brasil". Presumably, there is romance and drama about his lineage.

13 eps of school life comedy about four girls in the tenth year of a school that runs from elementary through high school. The past couple chapters of the comics can be read here if you use IE; I don't feel like patching it and thus can't describe.

Corpse Princess (AT-X, 10/02 (Th) 10:30)

Director: MOTONAGA Keitaro; Composition/Script: UEZU Makoto; Character Design: MIRAYAMA Madoka, HORII Kumi; Animation Director: HARA Masaharu; Animation Production: TMK
There's only so many ways to say "Japanese everyman figure has awkward schoolboy sex, now with it being off-camera and only with the annoying main heroine!" This time, the main character gets into a fight with a girl on the first day of school, and it's revealed that she's actually his arranged bride.

Black Butler (MBS, 10/02 (Th) 25:25)
Comic: TOBOSO Yana; Director: SHINOHARA Toshiya; Composition: OKADA Mari; Character Design: SHIBA Minako; Animation Production: A-1 Pictures
Would be more awesome as a sequel to Afro Samurai; instead, we're left with butler Sebastian (of course) being ambiguously gay with his bad-boy boy master (CV: SAKAMOTO Maaya, amusingly enough) while keeping him out of the trouble he tends to get in with the criminal and lunatic underworld.

Yozakura Quartet (TBS, 10/02 (Th) 25:29)
Comics: YASUDA Suzuhito; Director: MATSUO Ko; Sound Director: TSURUOKA Yota; Composition: HANADA Jukki; Character Design and Chief Direction: KIKUCHI Satonobu; Animation Production: Nomad
Confirmed one cours. "Heartful action" starring three superpowered girls who apparently form their town's government, and a normal boy.

Clannad ~After Story~ (TBS, 10/02 (Th) 25:59)
Games: Key/Visual Arts; Director: ISHIHARA Tatsuya; Composition/Script: SHIMO Fumihiko; Character Planning: HINOUE Itaru; Character Design/Chief Director: IKEDA Kazumi; Animation Production: Kyoto Animation
This is where all the Key depressing went, in terms of Clannad. If you're looking for a crying show this season, it's probably it.

Heavenly Warrior Sun Red (tvk, 10/03 (Fr) 24:45)
Comic: KUBOTA Makoto; Director: KISHI Seiji; Composition: UEZU Makoto; Caharcter Design: MORITA Kazuaki
Twenty-six 15-minute episodes of tokusatsu-themed gags.

Linebarrels of Iron (TBS/BOST?/Youtube?, 10/03 (Fr) 26:25)
Comics: SHIMIZU Eiichi, SHIMOGUCHI Tomohiro; Creative Producer: TANIGUCHI Goro; Director: HIDAKA Masamitsu; Character Design/Chief Animation Director: HIRAI Hisashi; SFX Director: ITANO Ichiro; Mecha Designer: SUZUKI Tsutomu; Composition/Script: YOSHIMURA Kiyoko; Special Setting/Script: MORITA Shigeru; Music: Conisch; Animation Production: GONZO
Reasons the show probably could have rocked are bolded. Reasons the show will actually suck are underlined.

A magical shrine maiden, her friend who's known the male lead since kindergarten, and her little sister who's a nun and her rival. Directed by the man exiled from Kyoto Animation after Lucky☆Star's low debut ratings, with a lot of other ex-KyoAni staff, so presumably they're at least the top of the list for making this kind of thing more than transentially interesting, I guess.

Doable Greek Legends (NTV, 10/04 (Sa) 25:25
Original: Hoichoi Productions
Sexy commentary overlaid on animated Greek myth by live-action actors.

A Certain Magical Index (Chiba TV, 10/04 (Sa) 25:35)

In a city of over two million in the western Tokyo metro area, over 80% are students with a curriculum including superpowers. One day a nun from a parallel dimension appears before the main character, with a right hand which dispels these, pursued by sorcerers from this opposite land of magic rather than study.

Schoolboy's love-love adventures with an elf girl (horrible implants, wildly destructive magical power,) his "it's not legally incest, honest!" cousin (walking anti-magic field, walking shy girl stereotype,) and I don't know some kind of sheep-girl or something. Also his school's 6-year-old Ayanami clone virtual guardian deity AI, a shrine maiden, a preteen boy professor, and a dog-girl maid.

Gegege-no-Kitaro: Japan Explodes (theatrical, 12/20)

Kitaro 40th Anniversary project. "An enemy that surpasses yokai". I find it so hard to get used to how kind and gentle TV Kitaro is now after watching bits of the first series followed by Hakaba Kitaro.

Azure Ul (theatrical, 2006-2008)
Animation Production: Gainax
Rerelease/redo of a movie originally paired with Honneamise, later redone in '98. Yeah, this isn't gonna happen, Anno's got his hands full with Eva.

-----------------------

Mashrambo 1 "Strengthen your Heart" and 2 "Endless Earth" (OVA, 9/21)
Editing Director: NAKAMURA Kenji; Animation Production: Toei Animation
Re-edit, in the vein of so many other boys' action "movies"; unlike those, however, this is direct-to-video, something Moonphase hasn't caught yet.

Goku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei vol. 1 (OVA, 10/17)
Original: KUBOTA Koji; Director: SHINBO Akiyuki; Animation Production: SHAFT
What happens when the perpetually-overthinking teacher and his not-a-harem of comedically-played harem archetypes don't quiiiiiiiite sell enough to justify a new TV series? They get a two-volume OVA, sold with consecutive bound volumes of the comics, to continue justifying more awesome black humor and prewar design and cultural quirks.

MS igLoo 2 vol. 1 (OVA, 10/24)
Director: IMANISHI Takashi; Script: IMANISHI Takashi, OHNOGI Hiroshi; Base Mechanical Design: OGAWARA Kunio; Supervisor: IZUBUCHI Yutaka; Design Works: IZUBUCHI Yutaka, KATOKI Hajime, ARAMAKI Shinji, YAMANE Kimitoshi, FUJIOKA Kenki; Setting Research: NAGASE Tadashi; Music: OHASHI Megumi; Planning/Production: Sunrise

Prince of Tennis National Finals vol. 2 (OVA, 10/24)

Almost entirely summed up by the title; dashing young tennis players compete in the national finals, to screams of fangirl glee.

switch vol. 1 (OVA, 10/24)
Original: naked ape; Director: OOHIRA Naoki; Character Design: ITO Takeshi; Script: TAKAHASHI Natsuko; Animation Production: Actas
Stylish action starring two narcotics detectives in Tokyo's Meguro ward. OVA has original story.

Gunslinger Girl -Il Teatrino- OVA (OVA, 10/24)
Adaption of chapters 1-2 of comic volume 6.

Platonic Heart Battle 1 (OVA, 10/29)
Director/Script: FUJIMOTO Yoshitaka; Character Plan: HAPPO Bijin; Composition/Script: SHIRANE Hideki; Character Design: MIYATA Naomi; Animation Production: Studio Kikan
The official descriptor of this is "Pretty girl sexy battle action". I'm not sure there's much more to say, given that the setting is indeed a girls-only battle tournament.

Negima! Ala Alba #2 (OVA, 11/17)
Original: AKAMATSU Ken; Animation Production: Shaft.
Covers chapters 178-180.
Needless to say, this is going to be a monster in terms of the number of shows available for watching, so I'm curious to know what people here are going to be taking a shot at.

A lot of sequels on my end and Nodame 2, Clannad AS, and ef - a tale of melodies are going to be on my watch list for sure since all three have had pretty good track records and I'm certainly curious to see how Nodame 2 does without Kasai on the director's chair.

Class 5-2 might be a comedy I pick up just because of the creator who had previously worked on Minami-ke is behind this one. The other rom coms will wait for threads/recommendations to be made before I actually take the plunge. Jigoku Shoujo 3 might be worth a watch, though not having seen the first 2 might be a deterrent (I doubt it though) but Tytania will be on the list for sure.

As always, I'm expecting a pleasant surprise or two to pop up. Obviously summer's surprise was Detroit Metal City (a surprise for me anyhow since I hadn't read the manga ahead of time) and Natsume Yuujinchou (which is as Mushishi-lite as you can get). If the pattern follows through, I should be picking up a few more in additions to the ones listed.

So, what's on your plate for this season?

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I'm gonna have a nice serving of Clannad AS because I wanna bawl. Then I'll take a side of ToraDora! Since I gotta have my Rie Fix. Kyou go Noni(Class 5-2), the OVA was awsome so I might be keeping up with this one as well.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

FUCK THE RIE. Also bumping this in hopes of getting more responses.

Guaranteed

Gundam 00 - Fuck yes, new Sunday timeslot. I am looking forward to seeing the Gundam Meisters get back together to wreck supreme amounts of Federation ass.

Hyakko - Like Manabi Straight, only not on crack this time (with added FALCON PUNCH instead). First episode seemed standard fare as far as Slice of Life/Comedies go, but it's got real potential.

Casshern Sins - RIP AND TEAR the anime. Fuck you, watch it. Robots are huge, that must mean they have huge guts.

Rosario Vampire Capu2 - More mindless fanservice? Check. More NANA MIZUKI? Sold.

Tenative

Clannad: After Story - My hate for Nagisa still burns like a thousand suns, and I'm not really interested in any more LOL KEY drama. It's a shame the rest of the cast is so superb though. I'll drop it the moment it goes into bullshit territory and then fly to Malaysia and kill Blah for trying to trick me again.

Still need to watch

Kemeko Deluxe - This show looks crazy as fuck and that is a good thing.

Kannagi, Akane-iro ni Somaru Saka, Index and Quartet are on my "to do" list for their first episodes.

Also the 13th (OVA) ep of Shigofumi came out two weeks back, go watch it you niggers.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

If you hate Nagisa so much, you should really just avoid watching Clannad After Story. Cuz, you know, seriously.

Akane-iro no Somaru Saka: Totally harem/h-game-esque, but entertaining nonetheless. Also hot damn @ the cast list.

Quote:
<Taco> I will watch it for the cast and hate myself for 30 minutes every week
Kannagi: Nearly fully choreographed dancan' OP spells a prelude to awesome. Looks to be pretty awesome, though hopefully a sub with decent video quality pops up sometime.

Rosario x Vampire Capu2: Looks to be better than the first season already, if only because THAT DAMN BAT isn't infesting every single scene. Hopefully the plot actually goes somewhere this time. Also the ED is totally awesome with disco dancing, but it's like Gonzo ran out of money to animate the entire thing so they filled up the gaps with random CG.

Hyakko: Another series about ~4 girls in high school, another guaranteed viewing.

Toradora: Teh Rie being tsundere. Still, if the manga is any indication, it should be amusing to watch.

Casshern Sins: Went in not knowing anything about the series except that it was oldschool, came out pretty interested. Very smooth animation in this one with plenty of robo-fights to keep you entertained. The environment is very bleak, yet there's still something oddly beautiful about it. Looks to have a rockin' soundtrack.

Not going to be watching Clannad After Story until the WS subs come out a few weeks from now, but there should be plenty of stuff to keep me entertained until then.

My shortlisted shows so far:

Kannagi--A director that got fired off Lucky Star for making it too boring(!), but this show had a really good first episode. I actually like this guy's pacing, so here's hoping he doesn't get fired again. The main character has an adorable personality that isn't tsundere! It does exist!

Hyakko had a so-so first episode, but I will give it a bit more of a chance. I love the OP and ED, and if the chemistry starts flowing a bit more, this has a lot of potential.

Toradora's nu-"Tsundere" is actually annoying to me (and I like tsundere, but there's a fuckin' limit), but I like what I read about the story. The first episode made me laugh with the guy's scary look making him into a thug at his school, so I'm at least interested. Also, I like the art style.

I was speaking idiomatically.

It's hard not to. Like I said, I think the entire supporting cast is amazing and it's generally fun to watch. I only had trouble with the last two or so episodes which I literally had to force myself to watch. If we get more of that I'm throwing in the towel.

Didn't people just get finished with another season of JC and TEH RIE both doing the same thing for the third time in a row with ZnT3? How are you not tired of that yet. I really want to like ToraDora, but she needs to stop pigeonholing herself. It's not like she can't do other character roles.

It's true that she's rather typecast as a voice actress, and if the comparison were only between Louise and Taiga then I probably wouldn't be so interested in the series. Thankfully, however, the plot, setting and supporting cast of both series are different and that difference is enough to keep me interested. The main female lead is a focus of these series, yeah, but it's not like she alone keeps the show afloat.

Besides, while Louise is kind of tsundere overload, I think Taiga's a lot more reined in and that makes it more bearable. She speaks with a lower pitch and just isn't so tsun-tsun all the time.

I guess the only real defense I have is that that kind of character portrayal doesn't bother me. I can always watch Gintama if I want to see her play another role anyway.

I completely agree with this. I'm just hoping ToraDora will progress into something more than just that, cause it really has a bunch of interesting ideas and stuff. I hope it's good :<

Ga-Rei-Zero got subbed recently by some group I've never heard of recently, and despite their usage of some really dumb notes (defining "ETA" and "Led Zeppelin") they seem to be pretty good.

Anyway, case in point is this: You all need to watch Ga-Rei-Zero for spinning fire dinosaurs, cute girls fighting with motorcycle-fu, and pure "what the fuck."

Lots of great shows this season. I've seen many of the first eps released and here's what I thought of em.

Kannagi: The show was kind of amusing and the animation was topnotch (the dance OP was strangely compelling), seems like a show I'll keep up with this season.

Shikabanehime Aka: I just came back from watching this actually, and wow it sure blew my mind. Plot seemed interesting, characters were interesting and the animation was great so hopefully it'll turn out to be one of the best shows this season. I liked it alot, so make sure you give it a try as well!

Clannad AS: Since I'm also not so fond of Nagisa I don't know how much I'll like this season. However I'll be watching it anyway, cause maybe you'll get some more reasons for actually liking her throughout the season.

Tales of the Abyss: Oh boy, what a disappointment it has been so far. As I pretty much know what the story will be from playing the game, I don't know how interesting this will turn out to be but frankly so far I think they've done a bad job. The characters are very badly done and I can't remember Tear having that personality in the game. I'll be giving it a few eps before dropping it though, just because I had been looking forward to this series.

ToraDora: The first episode was a neither bad or really awesome but I enjoyed it, just not as much as the so-far superior manga rendition. They seem to be following the manga which is good but I'm wondering what will happen later on because of the manga being unfinished and all. They'll probably stray from the plot into something completely else, which by all means can be good as well.

Hyakko:
Boooring bland shit. I didn't like the first ep at all. None of the characters felt even remotely likeable in my eyes. I'll watch another ep of it before dropping it though, but so far this seems to be the first candidate on anime I will be dropping this season.

To Aru Majutsu no Index: This show seems to have lots of potential in my eyes. Not much happened in the first episode so it's still hard to say how high on the list this'll be but I'll be looking forward to what the second ep has to offer.

Casshern Sins:
I hear a lot of people hated the first ep of this show, but I liked it a lot. It seemed to be almost of a poetic nature, I can't really put my finger on what it was but the show felt very original and just not like another action show. It seems promising to me.

Akane-iro no Somaru Saka: I enjoyed this one, despite being a generic harem anime. I'm still kind of puzzled over what was showed in the intro has to do with the show, however I fucking laughed my ass off at that dude showing off his fabulous moves after putting some guards down. Also lol'd at that HUMONGOUS HAIR of the Student Council President.

I'm hoping ef - Tales of melodies will come out subbed soon, because I've been looking forward to that show sooooo much. Also One Outs, I'm expecting lots from it.

Those are basically the only ones that have potential. Also , fuck the people ( most of the haters come from ANN)who hate the first ep of Casshern. It was awesome. I've been a fan of the shows for 3 years when I got into other classic animes. It's just a little funny because Casshern looks like Megaman Zero. Also, Toradora is decent >=p.

There's also that Kurotsuji-whatever it's called. Trippy shit ;p.

Ehhh.. I've stopped taking ANN seriously with their Spring/Fall articles and the only reason I read them is for amusement value. RandomCuriosity is where I go get more reliable opinions and look at screencaps to see if the show is interesting.

In any event, To Aru Majutsu no Index does look to have some potential as long as it doesn't fall into the Shana trap of having a romance stuck on infinite loop, put in annoying characters (like Black Star from Soul Eater), or overstay its welcome by continuing forever.

Nothing really looks great this season aside from maybe Casshern. I kept meaning to rent the movie back when I could get it for free, but decided not to after hearing they'd lopped off 40 minutes.

Tales of the Abyss is mildly interesting since I loved the game, but I'll wait for awhile before downloading it since the game's story didn't get good until they were past the beginning.

Really I'm just waiting for Spring to come for Tower of Druaga: Sword of Uruk and hopefully more Slayers.

Not that I ever go to ANN, but I can somehow understand the people who didn't like it and why they didn't though (having a slow start and all), it's just that I don't agree with them. People were probably expecting something completely else. But I'm thinking when the show picks up in pace more people will watch it. This show has lot of potential.

Do think you have to have seen the older shows to be able to enjoy it fully? Or is it totally unrelated to the older shows? I might watch them later anyhow as I've kind of gotten into a classic anime recently as well (watching Hokuto no Ken right now).

Now that I think of it, he kind of looks like Quickman and Megaman's illegitimate love child.

Ga-Rei-Zero:

Spoiler:
Seems there was really too much effort put into designing those Divison 4 members for them to be discarded after just one episode. There's a possibility that this is just a bad end and that following episodes will tell the story from an earlier point in time... but yeah.

Either way, sword girl is probably gonna be a major character. They should still bring Natsuki back though.

Caught Toaru Majutsu no Index last night and it looks pretty darn good. My first impression was "this is Zettai Karen Children infused with magic for an older audience." This series looks like it has a lot of potential, especially if it can keep the quality of the animation up. J.C. Staff's been on fire lately.

Aw come on. Black Star isn't anywhere near as bad as most thought he'd be in the beginning. In fact, I've grown to like him.

Watching Ga-Rei-Zero now, what the fuck kind of horrible CG Dinosaur is this.

And if you're reading RC, you need to look up Tenka Seiha. Aroduc is always good for a million cynical laughs.

Not exactly, but the original atmosphere and music from the early times sure feel nostalgic =]. It's still a remake and for the life of me I can't remember all but the original has Casshern, friender AND luna team up to battle against evil, etc. Not gonna spoil but it's probably better if you just watch this one. Besides, they're hard to find. The OVA's are probably somewhere here though. Good luck and let me know if you do find them. I love their music and the intro is just too damn good.

I just hope everything isn't too different. I'd like to see a brand spankin' new Friender (Tatsunoko vs Capcom doesn't count!).

What I plan on continuing to watch, but will ultimately drop off to two series by the end of the season.

Tales of the Abyss - Fuck yes you are the best Tales game ever. I look forward to hating Luke for half of the series.

ToraDora! - The male lead is awesome, even if the female half of the lead is TEH RIE. At least I know the BAKA INU doesn't keep up for the whole series, or else I'd be dropping this faster than a hot iron.

ef - a tale of melodies - Can I get some subs up in this bitch

Akane-iro whatever - See Saka's post.

To Aru Majutsu no Index - Looks okay, Index is likeable enough.

Might keep watching

Kannagi - It's okay, didn't care so much for the manga though.

Rosario 2 - I'll just watch the OP every week.

Shit I turned off mid-episode because it was a steaming pile of crap

Macademi WAsshoi

Kemeko DX

Still have to watch

Ga-Rei: So I will understand the WHAT.
Tytania: Subs where
CHAOS;HEAD: Air time where

ANN is a fucking joke with their "previews".

I mean, look at this, they got flak for one of their writers ragging on Clannad After Story (a writer who hasn't even seen the first season AND presumes to speak for "hardcore Key fans") and what does their frustrated executive editor do? Post this tripe. Professional much? It's not even very funny. He even sounds like Bradylama. You're trying way too hard, sir. Eat a dick.
