New HDD crashes computer

I bought a Western Digital Caviar SE 320GB SATA1 HDD to get more space besides my old Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 120GB ATA133 HDD. The new disk crashes the computer when I connect it, and the problem goes away when I disconnect it. At first I thought the issue was my somewhat old PSU, a HIPER HPU-3S350, with the peak load of 400W - however, according to this calculator, the overall wattage should be under 300W. The BIOS can detect the new HDD normally.

Any idea on what could the problem be? Thanks.

How ya doing, buddy?

By "crash" do you mean that Windows crashes, or does the thing refuse to boot at all?

Sorry for the slow response.

Windows crashes about halfway during it loads.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I managed to take a step forward.

I switched the SATA mode in the bios to enchanced, so now WinXP boots nicely and the drive is visible in the device manager - however, I cannot format it, because it isn't listed in My Computer. What should I do?

I'd also like to know if it's possible to completely move the contents (including the Windows install) from my old drive to the new one. Thanks.

Are you sure you have the drivers installed for RAID? I know my motherboard didnt recognize SATA drives until I did that.

I have no idea. How can I check? Also, if they're not, how can I install them?

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

Well you can check in the device manager.

The drivers should be on the disc that came with your motherboard. If you dont have the disc look your motherboard up on the internet and see if you can find drivers that way.

I resolved the problem, and I'm currently formatting the drive. I'll update in a couple hours, after formatting and cloning with Norton Ghost.

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

I found the drive listed in Computer Management and formatted it there.

Double Post:
Okay, I've learnt that it is smarter to take a deep breath and reinstall from scratch. Also, Symantec needs to GTFO.

Thanks for the help.
