Yes, cubed's site was very organized. As far as I remember, it also required registration - and mostly the "renowned" game rippers updated it with their work.
Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see how an anonymous, open database will work out.

Unfortunately, there will always be two sorts of game rips: Named/tagged ones which are made up like an album release (and occasionally devided into discs) and music folders taken from a game cd. I'm curious to see a solution for the latter.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Most of the games listed only had one rip, but a couple had multiple rips.

Personally...I think registration would indeed be a better idea, organization-wise. This was how cubed's site ran last time. The only problem was that it still lacked a lot of rips that were out there. Maybe some sort of hybrid of registered/anonymous would work.

Whatever we decide to do, I want to make sure it doesn't turn into a mess. If we have to be a little restrictive to do so, then so be it.

Double Post:
One thing that could be done is to allow users to sign up and post rips from other people. The thing with cubed's site was that you could only post rips you did yourself. I think this might be a good solution.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Soooo... what we're doing here is kind of a directory of "I've did it" pages?

Cause yeah, I fail to see the interest of that. Well, except for the ripper's egos, of course.

I would be glad to join the project as well, as long as the site is there to stay (not disappear this time, with energy having been wasted into it).

For security purposes, maybe it would be wise to only allow selected people to add/edit info. Creating a submission form for non-allowed people, which could get inspected by moderators before being added to the site could also work for safety, though more time consuming.

As for the content, I'm open to anything, but keep in mind that if you want to put in all existing rips, it will take almost forever...

I was speaking idiomatically.

A good solution to increase the number of rips added, yes, but it creates another problem. I touched on it earlier, but the description was all muddled.

How do these people submitting rips, which they have not created themselves, know whether it is a new rip, or whether it is one of those already listed? It would be rather annoying to have to download a track from each rip, and compare them with the one being considered for submission to verify this.

To make it easier, perhaps when a new rip is submitted, an entire tracklist should be included with the exact formatting used in the rip and an example MP3 tag from the rip should be put up as well.

The user adding a new rip can quickly check to see whether the rip they have matches another's tracklist identically (which isn't the best way to verify, mind) and/or whether the sample MP3 tag matches theirs as well.

Still, it may annoy some to have to go through each rip and verify this, hopefully a search function can be utilised.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

Unagi, I agree, of course. I don't expect someone to just list the name of a game or anything; we'll want as much information as possible. A tracklist should be a minimum requirement.

Oh, and if I haven't clarified it yet, I have actually set cubed up with server space and he is working on putting together a site to use. I'll make sure these suggestions get run by him as the rules are to be constructed.

One of the problems I had with cubed's site was that you had to follow a rigid structure. For larger rips or for those times when time was short, I simply didn't want to take the time to fill out every individual entry box. After trying to edit a page at GMR, I see the same setup.

Maybe what I'm saying is that it would be nice to have the ability to just copy and paste a block of text up there, such as from foobar2000's copy function, which will display the titles, lengths, and track numbers or something like that (yes, I realize that'd be just like a Wiki). But I'd be all for a site just like GMR/Cubed's World as well, so long as it stays around.

I could work with him to write a text parser. I agree that it would be a good idea.

Too bad the GFA development board got wiped. I'd like to swipe some of the ideas they had for the big soundtrack DB.

First of all, when I created Cubed World, it was only for my rips. Then I realize that some rippers would like to share their own gamerips too so I modified to include others' gamerips. Cause it HAD DIRECT DOWNLOAD (for the ones that think it was only a showoff list). It has details of what you've done like tracklists, composer, description field where you describe what you can't elsewhere (in others fields) etc.

If you want to share your gamerips too, it was your responsibility to ask for an account. Everybody was welcomed.

And I was working on a new version of my website, buy taking note of rippers' complaints. Like neothe0ne who was complaining for the standard I created. Standards were made to avoid any mess that it could make. Letting a big text field to give freedom to the submitter... I'm against it. Think of what it'll look like.

What I was going to do (then I'd have showed you all what I've done then you'll criticize) is when you submit a new rip, you have 2 options: STANDARD or FREESTYLE

STANDARD:
- 99 tracks max per disc
- each track should not exceed 80 min

FREESTYLE:
No tracklist limit, no time limit.

But in both modes, you have to put every single track individually. just like GMR always worked and still works fine by the way.

And I'm totally in for limit access. That's why I asked for it right in the beginning of the development process. Like Rimo said though it makes sense (moderating anonymous submissions). I'm willing to do it. As long as people show me proof of the rip existence, I'm gonna accept it.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

But couldn't you write a code that could convert the text? Say, for every line, it'd be [Disc] / [Track] / [Title] / [Artist] / [Length in mm:ss]. Or just have separate boxes for each disc, and have each line say "[Title] / [Artist] / [Length in mm:ss]" and let the script give each line a tracknumber. The reason why I'd like to see this is because foobar has its useful copy function, and it can be formatted to copy tracklists out in a certain format. If there was, say, a code box where you could just copy this text in a certain format, and let the site format it into tables and stuff for you, it'd save all the contributors a lot of time.

I'm not sure how hard this would be to code, as I have little experience with coding, but I imagine it wouldn't be too hard since lots of programs have such scripts.

I'd be happy to help out....and provide a place where people can upload their rips and make them easily available (and after someone finds out on this site that a rip exists of a certain kind of game).

Also, I get a lot of rips uploaded to my FTP from different kinds of people, which nobody might know about (because the ripper doesn't really make it openly available).
I could help out with this and make sure that I add new rips that I get to this database!
(and if we get more help from other FTP owners with this then this could definitely be a succes).

I do have a problem if people add rips which don't have specified tracktitles (or other info) or if someone just did a piss-poor job on a certain kind of rip.
(no editing, no loops etc etc).

See, that's the big issue... a lot of people (well, not a lot of people, actually...) DO make rips which may
a) not have proper track titles (i.e. just tracknumbers)
b) may not loop (because the default storage format is one loop plus a few seconds, and there is a code that tells the game where to loop to. This is no longer a concern for ADX music though, thanks to hcs's in_cube Winamp plugin.)
c) is a less-than-ideal line-in recording

The thing is, a lot of these kinds of rips are RARE or impossible for anyone else to do, and are often in great demand. For example, DVD_Rick is famous for digitally ripping loads of PS2 games which no one could do or take the time and energy to record and tag. The "problem" is that he doesn't tag them, but leaves them numbered. I say these kinds of rips should be added to such a gamerip index, but under a different "category" or something.

With a bit of work you can make a perfect second loop with sofware like Adobe Audition of these extraction files.
(Like I did with my extraction rip of Conker Live & Reloaded)
I can understand that some people may find this to be too much of a hassle, but i'm just a perfectionists about these kind of things.

I'm not very fond of his rips, but there seems to be a demand for these kind of rips.
Some people obviously just want the music "no matter what".
On the other hand I can remember trying out one of his rips (I believe it was Alias The Game)...and the sound quality was just horrible.
If you're ripping then at least make it so that it's listenable.

I don't know if it would really matter if those kinds of rips would need to go into a different category.
The idea of this site is to see if a rip is available for a certain game.
And if you're saying that rips without tracknames and such should be included then it's just of secondary importance.
(the person can decide for himself/herself if they're gonna get the rip or not...based on the info given on this site)

Jam it back in, in the dark.

cubed seems to be busy with other stuff, so his site will have to wait for now. I still want to get this info collected, however. In any case, collected data can be transfered to his site if/when needed.

What do you guys think is the fastest way to collect and display information. As I said in my original post, it doesn't need to be fancy. I'd like to get as much info as I can find for each rip too. This will help with quality control.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I don't know anything about coding or databases and I really have no opinion one way or the other about untagged tracks, etc.

BUT, I am looking forward to some type of game rip database, so whatever you guys decide to do, I will submit my rips' info and/or my rips to the site that is to be created.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Are you wanting a website, a database, or just to list the information? The best way to do that would either be to find the gamerips/soundtracks and see if they're valid, or just have the rippers themselves contact you and post the info to you. If the ripper is not available, then try to find their rips as best you can and see if they're valid. That's only if you want to just list the information. If you're talking about a website or a database, I haven't had enough exp. yet. Ask the real coders who do stuff like php or asp.

What SuperSonic said. Really, the fastest way to do it is to contact the rippers and have them send their data to you.

But if we're really looking for all the technical aspects of the rip (such as what platform, the # of tracks the rip has, the total size of the rip, etc.), it's a cross between having rippers send that info as well, or just getting the info ourselves. It wouldn't be too hard, IMO, but seeing as you're doing most of the work here I can offer to help research and get information.

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

Right now I would like to know which software or storage method would be best to use, first and foremost.

By the way, thanks for all the input, everyone.

One benefit of making our own scripts to generate metadata about a project (i.e. tracklists) is that it will all be in one consistent format. We won't suffer discrepancies between formats given to us by individual submitters, and need to manually go in and fix them. We can simply ignore any extra metadata and create our own, "KalebGrace Game Rip" format. This *may* require filenames to be semiconsistent between submissions, but scripts could also be made flexible enough to handle variations between naming schemes. Regular expressions are ridiculous like that.

I guess this is a little late to jump in, but I'm up for helping with this site in what way I can. I know PHP/MySQL, and lately have gotten into Ruby on Rails. I support basically any and all ways to support the spread ofand respect for game music, so I'm willing to put in time to the project. Let me know if I can be of service.

There's nowhere I can't reach.
