Recently started listening to Hollenthon. Awesome symphonic black/death metal stuff.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Ayreon, The Black Mages, Cruachan, Dragonforce, Dream Theater, Faith No More, Hollenthon, Mastodon, Megadeth, Metallica, Nightwish, Opeth, Pantera, Slayer, Sonata Arctica, and Stream of Passion.

And some others. Mostly those, though.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

I listened to I just recently and thought it was pretty good, actually.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I like Pantera. They're not my favorite heavy metal band by any stretch of the imagination, and I dislike that they helped inspire nu metal, but Vulgar Display of Power will always be a valid album to me.

I think System of a Down falls into that general alternative metal area for those bands that are heavy, but don't really fit in any other established genres. I dunno, I don't really think of them as metal. Obviously, some of their songs are pretty heavy, but a lot of them are pure post-hardcore or some kind of freaky mix of pop and metal.

Diffrent subject entirely: Anyone around here completely addicted to Ayreon?

They kept the aggression, but lost the... good. Are you aware that Kerry King cites Slipknot as an influence nowadays? :/

Well, I don't think they sound exactly the same at all. Kerry King can still play guitar, sure, but I don't think it's used as creatively, and the lyrics have certainly taken a plunge. The line, "Payback's a bitch, motherfucker" just makes me cringe coming from Slayer. In the past, Slayer have had the capacity to be subtly insidious, but now it just seems like loud guitars and yelling. Araya's vocals aren't anywhere near as good as they used to be.

Okay, okay, I know. They had loud guitars and yelling in the past, but I just think it was executed a lot better. Slayer is now rooted in modern popular metal, the kind of metal that needs profanity to sound hardcore. I tried and tried to get into GHUA, but it just sounds repetitive and angry.

But yeah. Opinions.

I think Opeth has a really cool sound, but luckily, they seem to be evolving. I see traces of evolution on Ghost Reveries, with the touches of keyboard, the underrated Hours of Wealth, and Atonement. The opening of Beneath the Mire is unlike anything else I've heard from them.

I dislike Lonely Day more and more over time. The solo in it is really cool, but yeah.. the lyrics suck, even by System of a Down standards.

Eh, I like System of a Down, but they've never had the best lyrics. I think Soldier Side has some of the best lyrics they've ever written, however.

Yeah, I discovered them just recently myself. Pretty much all of their albums are amazing. I like Dream Theater and all, but it's refreshing to see a progressive metal band that isn't so damn reliant on extended guitar solos.

I don't think much of it. I saw part of their "Top 40 Metal Songs" program, and it included songs by Korn, AC/DC, and Kiss. None of these are metal bands, in my opinion. And then Slipknot was on there. Perhaps a metal band, but certainly not a very good one.

Possibly. I don't know that much about Slipknot, admittedly, but I've always considered AC/DC and Kiss hard rock or something.

I still need to get Dragonforce's first album. I don't take the band seriously at all (probably impossible to do so) but it's definitely fun music. I agree with knkwzrd's point on contrast.

Well....actually I'd say sonic firestorm as a whole is the best album, in terms of how its composed and how the songs are arranged...it just offers the best listening experience imo, but Valley of the Damned by far has the best songs on it . Valley of the Damned, Black Fire, Black Winter's Night, Heart of a Dragon, and Starfire are all amazing. Revelation & Disciples of Babylon I thought were rather mediocre. I mean they are still awesome, but compared to the rest of their songs .
Thanks for the info. I'll see if I can find the album somewhere.

I'm not a big Iron Maiden fan, but I enjoyed the new album. Maybe it's just because I haven't really heard much of their classic stuff. (Except for Number of the Beast, which I actually don't like that much.)

Jam it back in, in the dark.
