Beef Jerky

I've had Chinese beef jerky many times before and I love it.

However, in regular stores I always see these bags of beef jerky that look nothing like the one I had before... so I bought a bag of Oberto Beef Jerky (Original flavour). I just tried it and I think it's NASTY. I also tried the Hickory flavour and it's a bit better, but after a few pieces it gets really disgusting.

What do you all think of Oberto beef jerky?

I haven't had beef jerky in quite some time now. I don't really prefer any brand either, but Oberto beef jerky seemed alright from what I've tried. I wasn't sure which flavor I had, but it was too salty for me.

I used to eat Oberto all the time when I was a Boy Scout. It's pretty yummy.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I don't think I've ever tried Oberto beef jerky. However, the kind of jerky I like is homemade jerky that takes hours to make with a dehydrator but you can personalize your own seasonings. I've tried deer and turkey jerky before, but I still prefer beef even though I haven't eaten jerky in a long time.

I always prefered Chinese beef jerky or "ro gan" (dried meat). I'm not too crazy about the smoking flavor that's usually in American mass produced jerky, Chinese jerky is usually either incredibly hot or incredibly sweet and very very tender while US jerky is tough and chewy.

And I keep typing jerky as "jerkey".

Oberto, put simply, is shit. Its like the encrusted grime thats scraped off the sides of the vats they use to precipitate that loathsome offal that is Pemmican.

Bridgeford, though perhaps not quite like mom's home-made jerky, is by far the best mass-produced stuff I've encountered.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

I actually prefer Jack Link's Beef Jerky to Oberto's. I eat the stuff with my buddies all the time, it goes great with icetea. You know you have good teeth when you can eat jerky though, I love the toughness of it.

We used to make our own fruit-roll-ups pretty often when I was little, I think we made jerky once or twice, too. =\

The only beef jerky I've eaten are Chinese-style ones, and gawd, are they so good. I love the flavour in these things.

It's too bad they're pretty expensive. I haven't had any in years.

Home-made venison jerkey from my grandmother is infinitely better, but home-made beef jerkey is pretty good too. If I have to settle for store-bought, Oberto teriyaki is kinda tasty.

Home made jerkey is good. Living in a hunting community pays off. During deer season everyone shares venisen jerkey, so amazing. Soft jerkey is the best. Turkey jerky is really good as well.

The stuff in the stores sucks. Slim Jims are the worst, it isnt even jerky.

Oberto beef jerky has been the only kind I eat, as tough and overseasoned as it tends to be. Asian beef jerky deserves a shot from me though.

I love both kinds of jerky. Being chinese, I grew up eating the chinese one. On res, they had oberto in the cafeteria so I had some of that. It's all good/

Never tried the Chinese variety. I love jerky though, it´s damn near a perfect food. Teriyaki for me, I used to get these chunks that looked like dog bites, they were soft and juicy.

I don't mind both kinds. It usually depends on what sort of flavor and texture I'm looking for.

The primary difference between American and Chinese jerkies is that the latter is usually cooked (to make them more tender) before being flavored and dried whereas the former is marinated and dried raw, thus giving it the slightly tougher consistency.

I think I'd like teriyaki flavored jerky. If only my preferred shop of snack buying had it. Or maybe I missed it while looking...?

Yes! Someone else who loves deer and turkey jerky. Slim Jims actually do make their own beef jerky--not just the sticks--but it's too dry for my taste. I think that's the problem with most store jerky. I know jerky is suppose to be dehydrated, but it shouldn't taste like spiced plastic.

In terms of store-bought jerky, it's Jack Links Teriyaki Beef Jerky. Good stuff.

Never tried any of the alternate versions of jerky (venisen and the like), though I've heard it's pretty good (venisen, I mean).


Homemade beef jerky is definitely the best though. Been a while since I had some, but they're always better tasting and softer than the store-bought ones.

And no, my mom never made beef jerky, unfortunately. I thought it was just a common saying, meant to suggest anything that is home-cooked (and keeping gender roles in mind, mom-cooked).

Bridgeford is certainly the best mass produced jerky I've seen, although the best ever is of the Jerky Hut variety, but that's more of a niche corner.

Shit is expensive as hell though, so I'm in no rush to buy a ton of it.

I'm not too much a fan of beef jerky, since the kind I've had tends to be pretty tough and stringy. I'm just not fond of having to chew that much -- we are not cows with cud. I suppose my opinion might change if I had some good jerky, though.

The Chinese kind, though, that's good stuff. Can't eat too much of it though as it tends to dehydrate me quickly.

When we lived in Alaska we had a neighbor who used to make salmon jerkey. That stuff was excellent. My dad makes homemade beef jerky, and it's a million times better than anything I've ever bought in a store. I don't like tender jerky.

My mom makes beef jerky. I live in a surburbia. My mom is quite the cook anyway. =) She makes the Chinese variety (for obvious reasons). Soy sauce, sugar, honey, hot peppers... gosh makes my mouth water when she does cook them!

My dad usually makes deer jerkey. Im not sure how he makes it, but it is very good. Chewy, but not to the point of being leather.

I like jerkey, but I cant stand the slim jim esque variety.
