PS3 controller to be redesigned
Posted Mar 22, 2006 at 07:04PM by Paul M

In more news out of GDC 06,
Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios President, Phil Harrison, announced that the heavily criticised controller for the upcoming PS3 will be redesigned and will be on display at E3 2006 in May.

I also wonder if Sony's recent court decision about the Dual Shock and the possibility they may not be able to include this technology in any future product came into play.
I'll be honest; I just couldn't get used to the old boomerang design. So this would be a good thing.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Are the blu-ray movies going to be region free too or just the games?

Most likely just the games, like the way it is with the PSP. Movies are under a different copyright law than games are, so I've heard.

Region-free, eh? Nice to hear! However, would that apply only to PS3 games? What about PSone and PS2 games?

No it would not, because they (PS2 and PSX discs) already have a region coding in their specifications.

Wow, you said it SouthJag. Though Deadlocked's ending could be interepreted as either the end of the series of possibly the start of a new adventure, there was never any word of a next-gen R&C game being worked on. Guess that little teaser today all but confirmed it.

About the region coding and controller redesign, it sounds like great news. But both really aren't all that surprising, given Kutaragi's announcement that all PS3 games would be on BD. The U.S. and Japan are in the same region according to Blu-Ray so even if it wasn't region free, the games could still play. Oh, and everyone and their mother knew the controller wasn't the final one.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Any new pics of the controller (revised?) I sure hope Sony is smarter than that to keep the present boomerang thingamajig.

Great! R&C is one of my favorite PS2 franchises. Considering the graphics of the PS2 versions, the PS3 rendition will be a great sight to behold.

Here's the teaser, Sega;

Quote:
Update 11:23am - A clip showing a futuristic city is ran, displaying a blimp with the words Ratchet and Clank on the side. The camera pans down through the site with enemy robots and flying vehicles overhead. It has been revealed that I-8, their first PS3 project, is now called Resistance: Fall of Man and looks "incredible". Price speaks a bit more about the hardware at hand.
Remember the Blimp in Metropolis from the first game? Well, yeah and the robots and futuristic ships pretty much point to a new game. That and the R&C across the blimp.

Oh, and the new design hasn't been revealed, they're saving it for E3.

I was speaking idiomatically.

About the Ratchet and Clank game -- I read somewhere that the city they were overlooking was similar to one in a Star Wars game; something that started with a C. Oh well.

Coruscant or whatever the hell it is? That's that massive city in Star Wars with the enormous skyscapers and endless number of cars. There have already been worlds like that in R&C, SouthJag.

I realize that, but having no idea what Coruscant looks like, the article made it sound as if it were some big deal. I 'unno.

That's what Coruscant looks like, but why would it seem like a big deal? Sprawling mega-cities are extremely common in R&C and in Sci-Fi in general.

PS3 to be region-free for games

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/697/697656p1.html

I don't know how much this will affect the wider gaming population, but especially for folks like us, many of whom are collectors, it means we can own any game, from any part of the world, without having to mess with modchips or warranty-voiding.

Quote:
The one caveat of this new region-free structure is that games made for specific regions' electrical and TV standards may have problems on your TV set. A PAL PS3 game, for instance, will have difficulty running on an NTSC TV, unless the developers have thought ahead and planned for that issue. It is currently unknown how the PS3 will cope with this problem (whether there will be a warning when you run an import about possible TV incompatibility, or if possibly there might be a no-play screen for incompatible games depending on your PS3's TV settings.)
Which, more than likely, won't be a problem for the majority of large release games. I expect only some of the smaller studios to be lax in this department.

This will make my life much easier in the future. No longer do I have to play with swaps/mods to play legally owned import titles anymore should I want to grab an import PS3 title.

How I wish this would have been done with the PS2.

Certainly good news for eurogamers like me. I'm guessing PS2 games will still be locked so can't let go of the old console just yet.

Regardless, if I ever do get a PS3 (there is that new Ueda project), this ought to make life a whole lot easier.
