Planning to buy a modded PS3

Hi guys, I need some advice.
I'm planning to buy a PS3 (perferable modded so that I can download PS3 games) for my brother.

I had some rumours about not buying the 40GB/60GB/80GB version..?
Also, is it a good place on the net where there are a lot of PS3 games?

Mucho thanks!

You can't mod the PS3 yet.

Ok, but back to my question regarding the different types of PS3. I think read somewhere in here something about one type being more stable than the others...?

I know nothing about one type being more stable than the others, the main difference is how the backwards compatibility works, as for the 40GB you have none, 60GB is the best in this department and 80 GB is capable of still unperfected software emulation wich currently runs about 70% of PS2/PSX titles with constant patches and fixes. The best bet would be a 60GB, but that's a launch model, pretty hard to find I guess.

And besides, even if you did download PS3 games it would take what, like 3-6 on your hard drive total before becoming full? The blueray disks hold a huge amount of space and games like Uncharted are like 22GB in size. It wouldn't be worth it in my opinion unless you swapped out your 40-60-80GB PS3 hard drive with a 200GB or 500GB hard drive. And I'm not sure if you can even do that. =\

All I really want is a method of playing my Japanese PS2 imports on my PS3 so I can finally retire my modded ps2.

Well, not all PS3 games take up a full Blu-ray disc. Many are under 10 GB, especially those that are also released on the 360. You can get a 250 GB laptop hard drive for 150 dollars; if an average PS3 game is about 15 GB, that HDD is good for 15 games or so. Ten dollars per game, pretty acceptable.

Though who knows when a HD loader will actually become available.

I am under the impression that you can replace the PS3 hard drive with a substantially larger model. Wuth that said, I agree entirely that downloading PS3 games doesn't seem worthwhile. I've only ever been interested in downloading games which aren't readily available for me to buy.

I admit I would like that too. Since Sony seem to be phasing out backwards compatibility, I wouldn't bank on it. Here in Europe, the 40GB model is the only one available, and even in the US, I believe you are only getting software backwards compatibility on the new model.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Since I have the 60GB model with the hardware built in I still cling to the hope that someone will figure out a method to make it bypass region code for ps2 games. ;_;

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Lucky you. I'm planning to buy one right now, but the 40GB is the only model in European stores. Admittedly I want it for PS3 games such as Disgaea 3, but I'd still like to have the PS2 backwards compatibility. It's not like my PS2 is going to last forever.

I have no intention to play PS2 games, only PS3
Guess I'll go for the 80GB then.

Another question, does PS3 have minigames that is downloadable (free?) like the XBOX360 has? (I think Microsoft has a point system; how do you gain points...?).

(sorry if these are dumb questions, I've only had PC)

Last question: Any recommended websites to buy PS3 games? A friend of mine told me www.play.com - I'm not sure if that site is reliable or not...

You know, I rock the 80 gb model and I download updates regularly. I've not once had the slightest bit of compatibility problems. Not a single game with so much as a CG flicker.

I was speaking idiomatically.

John Mayer just asked me, personally, through an assistant, to sing backup on his new CD.

In that case I certainly do hope Europe gets the 80gb model soon, but there's no sign of it right now.

Any model suits you just fine then. It doesn't matter at other than the storage space for downloaded content.

You buy points either using your credit card or by buying them at your local games retailer. There's nothing free about XBOX Live as far as I know. You need to pay monthly.

I know the PS3 does have some downloadable games, but nothing like as much as on XBOX Live.

The American 80 gig uses the same software emulation that the Euro 60 gig used, so you might see if you can find one of those around.

Soluzar: Yes, though not as many, I don't think. But tons of downloadable content. Little shooters, and even some stuff like the original Wild Arms.

I was actually trying to answer gaming's question, but looks like my screwed-up quote tag caused some confusion. I guess the answer's just as good no matter who it's directed at, and at least you're already a PS3 owner so your answer is better than mine.

I've been looking, but most stores only have the 40GB. I'm going to travel to a larger city to do my shopping in a few days time. I would have bought a PS3 a long time ago if I'd known they were going to cut backwards compatibility completely. It's especially annoying because I know from the compatibility list that it would work fine with several games I still plan to play.

I'm definitely going to keep looking. I'm in no particular rush, since some of the games I'm most anticipating aren't out yet. There are definitely a few titles I'd pick up right now though.

The 20 GB version doesn't have Wi-Fi, so it pretty much sucks. It looks slightly better, but who cares. The PS3 is still the best-looking console this generation by far, even the chrome trim version.

The 20gb console was a piece of shit. Also, I already have 22 gigs of stuff in my PS3. Don't listen to 'lith about anything but audio. Ever.

I don't know... I'm seriously tempted to listen to the guy regarding HDTV as well, since he says that the best ones are CRT HDTVs. I admit that I tend to believe that as well, plus he knows lots of big words which seem to mean... something... important... about HDTV quality.

On the subject of the PS3 I'm not tempted to listen.

I just found out that all PS3s are fully backwards compatible with PS1 games, though, which will take the sting out of getting the 40GB if I have to. I still have some PS1 games I didn't even play, let alone beat yet.

what the fuck is this idiotic, uninformed thread? the 20gig version is universally accepted to be obsolete. why do you think sony stopped producing it.

considering both the 60gig and 80gig still use 65nm chips -- and that the 60gig supports hardware based emulation as opposed to the 80gig's software -- the choice is obvious.

and the best hdtv line right now is Sony's SXRD. stop listening to fakes, liars, and wannabes.

idiotforce, i swear.
