Let's touch this up, shall we?

It's happened to all of us.

We're jamming on the computer, rolling along, doing our thing... for many in here, you're probably photoshoping, or putting together a movie of some sort. Some of us might be composing music, maybe. For myself? It's usually writing.

Suddenly, for one reason or another, something comes up, and we need to leave our computer - "just for a few minutes." Well, you know how it is; maybe your burrito has just come out of the microwave, when suddenly some friends pull up. "Dude, let's go knock up a seven-eleven!" And you're all like, "Wicked! I'm in." A few minutes becomes a few hours, and by the time you get back to your computer, the day's over. Also, there's someone else using it.

"Um, hey there. What are you doing on my computer?"

"Oh, I just needed to use it for a sec. But it's okay; I'm done now."

"Yeah, uh.... where's all my stuff? That thing I was working on?"

"Hmm? I don't know what you're talking about."

That's how the conversation always goes. You should have saved, yeah. You could have locked it. You could have hid the mouse, even. but you weren't expecting to be running from the mafia that particular day. Or whatever. And now, you've lost six, maybe seven hours of work, because your roommate, or your parents, or your sibling, is an inconsiderate clod.

Well, the first time you angst about it, and of course that never works. You might even try to bring it up in conversation - immediately, they fall back to "well, you're an idiot for having unsaved work on your computer." Because, you know, that justifies their behavior. They might try, "You've got the only computer in the house" or maybe a variant: "you've got the only computer with internet access; I broke mine - so you need to leave it in a state that other people can use it in."

Leaving a document open does not constitute an unusable state.

Well, in either case, you eventually need to resort to direct methods:

Note the page dimensions - they match the sheet of legal paper it's going to be printed on, so it can be taped over the moniter.

The thing about taping stuff to the moniter is that it might fall off. Or something. The only surefire way to keep it on there is to.... that's right! Set it as your desktop. Well, sure; the dimensions might be a bit off, but it's not really that hard to change them. No, the real problem runs far deeper: That picture is ugly as sin.

So, let's start up a little community art project: Take all those little pet peeves of yours, all those things that idiots do on your computer, be it deleting your files to clicking on pop-ups; spending hours on instant messenger, or saving porn on your hard drives. Take all of these things you hate, and respond to them - than make a desktop out of it. And remember, if it's a desktop image, you'll be seeing it a lot, so make sure you're not going to be sick by the third time you look at it.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I've gotten into the habit of locking the computer everytime I leave it running, weather it be to the bathroom, to get food, or anything else where Im not sitting in front of it. Not that hard to press Windows -> L -> S and its equaly easy typing in your password when you get back. Saves the trouble of having to worry. Also, who reads backrounds anyways? From my experience, the "intruder" either minimizes current application or just closes it, then goes onto doing whatever they do on their own computer.

Just lock and forget

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

ctrl-s

Use it early, use it often.

Seriously, who works for seven hours on something and doesn't save it once? I'm the only one who ever uses this machine and I still save obsessively.

How ya doing, buddy?

OH dear parents and PCs...

I have tryed to teach them not to produce bullshit with every click...
Nothing helped but your Sheet could work just have to translate it

But there is something my dad will never learn!

He's never checking wheather the computer is on or not. And that is why it crashed some time ago. I used Defrag over night and in the early morning my dad tryed to start the PC

=>DEEEE DOOOOOOW .... : CRAAASH :

Then the blame was put on me
why I had to defrag the pc... -.-

oh yes because:
--->daddy is an 1337 virus, dialer and worm Collecting machine..
I don.t know how he does it because I'm not able to get them even if I want to.I should buy my own pc ... really

Ah, yes this is now a thing of the past, because i got a new monitor...a nice sexy flat screen, only thing is, there are no visable buttons on the screen...anywhere, there are 3 buttons built into the size(almost invissable) one is the power/menu and the other 2 are the adjusters. Well, due to the fact that every body i know is SOOOO computer elitorate, that they cant find these buttons, it is almost imposible for them to do anything. and besides i almost never get up from my computer with out saving, if im doing somthing very important.

Shit, I learned to "save often" from years of playing RPGs. Duh.

I might whip up something, but seeing as I'm on a laptop now and vehemontly bite at anyone who approaches it, it's really not needed. But I could've used something like this a few years back when I was stuck sharing the family PC.

Whatever happened to locking doors? Thank goodness two of my three computers are in my room (I don't really care about the third one in the living room). I slam the door really hard so anyone within earshot knows to stay out of my room.

Also, with the third computer, all the cords are in different places and the HDD is practically clean. Nobody's going to be messing with that one without my permission.

I get distracted a lot (I mean I should be working on my portfolio, but I'm typing here, eh?), but I got burned too many times during my multimedia BFA program not to know to save!

No one dares touch my computer.

Once or twice, my sister has needed this thing to type something up for school or for the connection. I make it SO UNWELCOMING no wants to use it. I literally put my keyboard in a metal container and padlock it up. I'm lying. But thats okay.

Seriously, though. We have so many laptops and computers in this house, no one really needs to touch my shit. If they have trouble with their PC, they'll give me a call. Not that I am super great at fixing them, but I can get a job done. Determination ++

And yea, I save whatever I am working on (if anything) when I get up to leave someplace. Even when I start working on something else, I save.

I just have a spare, restricted profile on my computer in case a random sibling wants to use it, and I make sure most dangerous stuff can't be accessed by them.

I used to have a similar problem.. my sister would annoy the hell out of me to use the computer and it usually ended up with me having lost the efficiency and time on important work!

so to fix the problem, we got a laptop... it's good cuz I can use it for stuff on the go and she can use it whenever she wants..

Having a computer + a laptop is a great help to this problem lol

(it's also good, cuz I cant use photoshop on my computer anymore.. it crashes and reboots my computer I can't fix it, I tried everything, even installing a new graphics card, ram, software, so meh..)

Sometimes I save more than I probably need to. Like every few sentances. I don't know why, maybe I'm just really paranoid for some reason. Its not a bad habit though, I rarely ever lose work from lack of saving.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?
