For the majority of the game, I only used healing spells. Starting at Giruvegan, I spread some gambits around for haste, protect and shell. Wow, what a difference that made. I completely slaughtered the next several bosses. Of course, it helps if you have up-to-date armor and weapons (which I do).

I still don't use any attack magic.

I'm 41 hours in. If I bothered to go after the Espers (which I'm not. I never use the ones I have to begin with) and did all the hunts, I could easily see the play time doubling. I'm at the penultimate dungeon now.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Have you tried pressing the L1/2 and/or R1/2 buttons? One of them switches targets to enemies.

Hey, don't sweat it. When I got down there and saw those pedestals, I wondered if I had to use them as well. For all those that haven't beat White Mousse, please do. The Yoichi Bow will make life easy for your bow user and it'll save you a mountain of gil in the process.

Yeah, it took me a while to figure it out, but you can target anything with any spell. Press R1 to toggle between friendly and enemy targets.

You can also target your reserve characters, so you don't need to bring them out in order to use Raise or something on them.

I haven't bothered trying yet so I can't verify it until I run across a foe that does it... but does anyone know if you can pull off the classic double-reflect trick for spells in this game? My first play-through I totally missed the whole targeting allies bit...

And yeah, through the R1 target switching, you can also target wandering Bangaa hunters as well as the Garif chief that occasionally goes out wandering killing things in the nearby lands. It's kind of amusing...

Reflect in this game is the biggest crock of shit I've seen in a long time. I went into the Terminal Junction #7 path on my way to Bloodwing and the skeletons all do second level spells, as well as Blinda and some other stuff. NONE of it reflected and it makes your healing gambits your worst enemy unless you have Reverse on nearest/any active.

The funny thing... is that they actually count in your Bestiary, and you don't seem to suffer any penalty at all for killing them. Just yesterday I wiped out a Rabanastre watch guy, got the "blowback" head-over-heels animation no less.

Ok question about guest character near end of game:

Spoiler:
Does Reddas leave your party after the lighthouse(I'm on the second part of it)? Cause I've seen vids of people doing several end game bosses with him in party. Please don't say if anything spoilerific happens to him later on. :P

Yes, he does. And you can reach almost all of the locations in the game even before clearing the lighthouse, so that might explain why he's been in the videos you've seen.

But I'm not a huge fan of all the running around and switching stuff on and off... I'm just not good at puzzles either. :/

The storyline game's easy if you do all the optional content, that's a fact. If you don't, it's challenging. That's pretty much the way of things. I wouldn't say lack of exp grind automatically makes a game "easy", it's just that there's so many things to do that have a side effect of getting your equipment, levels and LP beefed up in augmentation to the main quest that it can quite quickly become a cakewalk.

A lot of the challenge for me was figuring out strategies and how things worked as far as learning the game and situational things to do. Having a guide pretty much blows that out of the water, hence why I aimed for pure spoilerlessness the first time through

I was speaking idiomatically.

Disable is just pure weaksauce, my friend. When I see an enemy do that, I scream "COPOUT!", proceed to use hasted Esuna and continue the fray. Oftentimes, I have Penelo and Balthier throw Bravery and Haste on Berserk Vaan as punishment =D.

The good thing is... marks and bosses like Mr. Earth Tyrant, is that they're not immune to status effects (or at least not like story bosses). Blind and Slow are really good to have, as well as Silence and/or Silence Shot on Balthier.

0_o So that's how you reverse targets. That may come in handy. Hate to keep hammering the thread about hunts but I have yet to find a decent walkthrough online for them. I cut down all the trees in giza to get to the area the Gil Snapper should be. Game tells me it has to be the right weather for him to appear but I've been there multiple times with either type of weather and have yet to find him there. Like finding all the trees wasn't hassle enough.

Also, what level would be recommended for the Trickster? I tried him once a few levels back and came close, but then he made himself immune to physical and I couldn't find the right element. I'm currently at 36/37 with all my people.

How ya doing, buddy?

Er sorry, I meant to say Disablega One enemy in the penultimate dungeon uses it on you... So, yeah, no chance of Esunaing there unless someone resists.

Silence shot is a godsend, yeah. I always equip someone with it for any mark that casts.

Strange, I beat him at around that level. Looks like I got lucky and had Vaan berserked chopping at him, then brought out my reserve team, did a chain and then brought in the main guys. Once Berserk wore off, I got in a chain that ended in Ark Blast sending Mr. Trickster backing into a FFVII chocobo stable.

Oh and Katze, Disablega has always missed for me, but even when it doesn't... that's why my Disable-immune accessory is on me. Earlier in the game it was a Silence-immune one since the enemies back then (even some now) like to use it.

DON'T REMIND ME. I had to go back and forth into that area over 20 times before the stupid Mark even appeared!! That was so annoying!! In contrast, there was always a Sandstorm whenever I went to kill the Ring Wyrm. Uzuki, the weather has to be raining heavily before the Gil Snapper appears, not just raining.

Wow, the espers are mighty easy once your on higher levels. I just got Andromehehekke, and Zelhera, this battles were rediculously easy, lol.

Where can you find the higher level magic spells? I am up to Balfonheim, and i only have Curaga as my highest. I don't have Vaccine, bravery, curaja, watera, wateraga, etc etc. Where can i find them?

Basically, if killed the Cactoid that Dantro wanted you to kill (with the flower on it's head), go to the village in the Estersand, north of the Barheim Passage. There, go to the house nearest the shore and talk to Dantro's wife to give her the flower. After that, the next item on the list is 3 shells that can be found glinting in the water near the shore (village or outside, it doesn't matter). Next, she'll ask you to go back to Dantro (at the Estersand outpost) and get the phial by examining the crates nearby. Head back and give it to her and she'll ask for a flower which you can get over in the Broken Sands map near the south entrance (it's a poking out of a crevasse with white flowers). Take this back to her and reenter the village 2 times and then go speak to her. After some chitchat, the healed hunter that she was caring for will give you the key to reenter Barheim.

But before you can do this, you have to give her the flower for Step 1, then go over to the shore and speak with the people in the crowd. This takes you on a short sidequest where all the work you'll be doing is going behind the house after you're told to find Dran. Examine the flower and head back to the ship to wrap this up. After this is done, you'll be able to do the rest of the errands she gives you.
Ah, I actually did a lot of this very early on in the game, but I didn't know where to go to find the Cactuar (Cactoid?) Dran. Thanks a lot for explaining the rest of it; I thought I had blown it because I kept hearing people scream about a Serpentskin, which I promptly sold.
Quote:
Hachi, what level are you at? Bloodwing's all the way in the West Annex of the mines in the new area open now. Remember that split in the path with all the mimics around a rock formation in the middle and along the walls? Take the path to the left and just follow that. I asked your level because the enemies go from level 8-9 to 40-42 in an instant. Not just that, but somewhere on the Zaivha span map, Deadbones and Bogeys start to appear. Oftentimes they've got some combination of Protect, Haste and Shell on and an inclination towards mobbing you. Keep Libra refreshed as there are traps everywhere here, none of which I triggered since I had Float active.
I'm at around level 45 for my active party, and all have constant self-Haste, Protect, and Shell, so I'll be ok. They also have Archades armor (haven't gone back to Balfonheim or whatever it's called for the new armor) so I think I'll be ok on defeating them. Those Embroidered Tippets really help tremendously.
Quote:
And Bloodwing himself isn't too bad, but his Leech-spamming is a pain in the ass, especially given where he spawns. The West Annex has an elevated strip that has Bogey x 1, DeadBones x 2 teams spawning every few steps. Worse case scenario is you get tangled up in that while 'Wing's tearing you up.
As long as I can Mist Quickening him at the end, I should be fine, I wager.

The game is a lot more fun when you take the time to do all of the extra stuff; it makes the game flow a lot more smoothly, I've noticed.

Wow. I think everyone's further than me. The... Stillshrine? Of... something: I'm confused. I guess I need to
Spoiler:
point statues in certain direction(s)
or something like that. I'm kind of tired of the place, though. I haven't played for 3 or 4 days.

HOWEVER, I usually want to play again whenever I'm stoned. So it must be a pretty fun game, still. And if the story gets good again only toward the end of the game, as long as it does get really good again, then I'll be satisfied.

I pretty much have it like this:

VAAN: 2nd Thief/Pirate (Steal, Poach, Traveler), with basic healing spells (Cure, status curatives, Life), with daggers, swords, crossbows, and explosives.
BLONDE GIRL: White/Time mage (all curative & time spells), and 3rd Thief/Pirate, with crossbows, daggers, poles, and explosives. (Maybe ninja swords because HELLO -- The Bride.)
BALTHIER: Thief/Pirate, with guns, daggers, swords, and ninja swords.
FRAN: Red Mage (Cure, Cura, status curatives, Life, elemental, elementala), with bows and bare claws.
BASCHE: Dark Knight (defensive/protective abilities), with swords, bows, guns, javelins, axes, and bare.
ASHE: Mage Knight (defensive/protective abilities/spells, and arcane magic), with swords, crossbows, bows, and daggers. (And measures? Might as well.)

I may play after Survivor ends.

Jam it back in, in the dark.
