Not being in school doesnt mean your not Smart, not everyone has the chance to go to school. One of the guys i worked with From El Salvador ( dont worry Gumby and Lehah he had a work visa), used to tell me of his life back there. He said he started working at 6 helping his dad on the farm, and his parents could not afford to send him to school. Another guy i worked with jose who i respect alot, has been here on visas working for the past 10 years, also never got schooling as a child i wouldnt call him not smart, Even without schooling he has worked here very hard, bought his own house in El Salvador and will be making sure his children go to school. Im really happy for the guy.

Hard-core hillbilly Irish people are very anti-immigration of any sort.

Immigrants are taking over their city, you see.

This is nothing new, there is a common cycle for such things.

I don't think there is such a thing as "hillbilly Irish". Hillbillies are deligated to the blue mountain ranges below the Madison-Dixie line. The Irish are known to have more or less completely stayed in the Northeast.

And people in Boston are fucking morons anyway. Sports Illustrated voted Red Sox fans as the second worst fandom in sports history.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

And I slept with a girl who graduated with a degree in Neurosciences from Yale. And guess what? She's a citizen. Whats your point, boy genius?

Besides, I can tell you straight out that some of the stupidest people I've ever met have the best education money can buy. This is why a college professor can have 5 degrees in macro-economics but still dresses like a fuckin flood victim.

Obviously Raskolnikov is supposed to represent the illegal immigrants. They may be smart, but they're lazy and don't want to get a job, so they kill old women and steal their belongings.

Hate to bump this thread. But I'm interested in hearing people's opinions on this subject now that America's national anthem was translated into spanish and will be broadcasted this way.

Personally I think it's completely wrong and disrespectful. Not to mention stupid, because it's going to cause even more hate and will send the wrong message.

You dont see National Anthems being played in different languages at International events. When another country's anthem is played it is played in thier language. This is a thing we call respect. Playing it in any other language is extremely disrespectful.

I'm just glad some spanish stations down here in So. Cali have refused to play it. Atleast they can see and even admit it's wrong. Ofcourse, this isn't going to stop it from being played, because other stations still are and some celebreties/singers will be releasing it too. Hell, I even heard that there's a version with modified lyrics to support illegal immigration.

Someone please tell me I'm not the only one alarmed by this.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

To be frank, I don't think it's such a horrible thing. I can understand why everyone is screaming sacrilege, but I think the translation helps the immigrants understand the merit of each word in the Star Spangled Banner.

I hate to get involved in the debate here, but don't you think that having the National Anthem in Spanish is uh. KIND OF STUPID. The majority - VAST MAJORITY - of this nation is English speaking. While yea, sure, its nice that we're a melting pot and all, English IS the main language in this country.

I don't see why they'd want to sing a song that is actually a drinking song from the war of 1812 - American History, here - in Spanish? Sure, sing it in Spanish all you want. Meanwhile, I am sure the Italians, the Russians, the Germans, the French, the Chinese et cetera will be making their OWN rendition in their languages. I mean, they too were important players in our national history!

I am not saying that they SHOULDN'T sing it in Spanish. I am saying it shouldn't be OFFICIAL.

Come on Pang. Don't be silly. I am all for immigrant rights, but this is a little EXTREME.

You're hurting my head, Shonos. See, that's like a superpower! You reached across the internet with nothing more than your keyboard and dealt me a painful head injury. Congratulations! You should use your superpowers to fight grievous crimes such as those committed every minute by the fucking illegal immigrant spics that are taking our jobs.

Let me try this for you again, ok? Now, maybe due to all the crime-fighting, you're a little distracted and didn't pay attention the first time I dumped this stone-cold fact on you.

The United States of America has no National Language.

THEREFORE

The United States is in no way wrongfully impacted by having its songs sung in any language. Saying that the Anthem should only be sung in English because we are MOSTLY English speakers is like saying that only Protestants should be allowed to sing it because 52% of us are Protestant. The United States is not ABOUT using majority rule to crush minorities. Did you SLEEP through Civics class?

Oh, silly me. Your parents pulled you out of school when your gym teacher went through the obligatory Sex Ed unit and you ran home crying because you had to see a video about girl parts.

I don't see how a handful of people translating the national anthem to Spanish would affect the immigration protests at all.

Because you know, in the end, few people care.

I don't think it'll die that easily. It's bounds to be effectively used to support the cause. The leaders doing the protests are not oblivious or dumb.

Well...the anthem combined with Mondays upcoming boycott/protest should really serve to cause further division in the country. Hmmmm a work walkout sponsored by immigrant groups and big labor scheduled fro May day?? Nope...no communist agitating here.

Singing the anthem in Spanish points out the big problem with the illegal immigrants and that is a failure to melt into the "vast melting pot" of America. Past immigrants from Europe made a point to learn the language and assimilate. This group seems to want to turn various areas of the U.S. into little mexicos.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I wonder if there is a version of "O Canada" in French, since English and French are the two languages of that nation.

To be frank, I think the Latination of the anthem is a bit frivolous. That's about it.

As for the impending protest/boycott. I'd like to see them truly make our cities "crawl to a halt" as they termed it. Those organizing the events are overestimating their importance.

Strangely enough, this has caused some strange bedfellows to form:

Quote:
Some African American groups plan to join members of the Minuteman Project tomorrow to protest illegal immigration, which organizer Ted Hayes called the "biggest threat to blacks in America since slavery."

The protest is to start at 1 p.m. today in Leimert Park and is organized by Hayes' Crispus Attucks Brigade and the American Black Citizens Opposed to Illegal Immigration Invasion.

Hayes, a homeless activist, said most homeless people in Los Angeles are black and that illegal immigration compounds the problem because African Americans refuse to work for the "slave wages" that many illegal immigrants accept . . .

So, Pang, you'd have no qualms if we switched the National Anthem to Navajo for the sake of irony? I mean, barely anyone in the nation speaks that language anymore and the Native Americans were here first, so in a sense, why not take the language of the people we misplaced and use it to represent our current nation?

While I disagree with some of what Shonos said, there is something to chew on when you consider the current climate in this country. Yes, America has no offical language - but that does nothing to bolster anyone's want or need or presumed right to sing the national anthem in another language either. People who are reacting to the immigration situation by singing songs in Spanish are no different than 14 year olds going to Hot Topic and buying studed collars.

Those immigrants, while maintaining a community to some degree, tend to mesh quite well with american society. Tell me where are all the school classes being taught in Chinese or italian or Korean? These folks don't usually come over demanding things be done to accomodate them. They learn English and become successful Americans. Of course most of them come here LEGALLY.

Is being shouted at to leave a shop in a mixture of broken English and Chinese part of meshing well with America? I mean, just out of curiosity.

Yes it's available in French, English, and mixtures of both. It's often played one version after the other as well.

As for this whole 'no official language' thing. Why not just adopt English as the official language? It'd be a hell of a lot more simple since it seems to be what a huge majority wants anyways.
