Sup PAL, there's a new update. Version 2.1E. You'll have to do a manual update via the system setttings thing-a-ma-jig, no fancy message this time! I uh, have no bloody idea what it does though.. because it SURE DIDN'T FIX MY POINTER. >=(
How ya doing, buddy? |
Oh great, I just updated my cousin's Wii this afternoon. Woopee.
Hopefully this will get rid of the Opera "black borders" I've been getting, as well as the weird ass problem of having to reset the Wii Shop Channel twice. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
I think that 2.1E added more parental controls. It said so after updating but that's all I saw.
Additional Spam: There's now a working Freeloader for the PAL Wii, according to play-asia's report in which they've tested multiple versions and stated the following:
1.) Test results marked with (*) have currently not been performed by us due to unavailability of DOL101 model Gamecube™ machines. However they are based on various reports made by customers in the past and based on our experience. We will redo tests on DOL101 Gamecube™ models once available to us. 2.) Japanese and Multi Version Freeloader appear to be identical, apart from their packing. Multi Version Freeloader will be phased out and are soon to become unavailable as soon as we have run out of stock. 3.) The PAL Version Freeloader features a new interface. We believe it will be likely that Datel is going to revise their Japanese and US Version Freeloader with the new interface in the near future but do not have further information available at present. 4.) DOL101 Gamecube™ models are the new models, which no longer include the built-in Digital Out Port (for connecting a Gamecube™ Component or D-Cable). You can also find the model number on the label at the bottom of your GameCube. DOL101 model machines were not available to Play-Asia at the time the tests have been conducted. We will update our test results as soon as those models become available to us.[/quote] At $20 (US) this is a steal. I can't wait to see what F-Zero GX and Ikaruga look like on component. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Next time, could you give a recap beside posting a link? I know I sound like a lazy bastard, but I really would like to avoid opening links unless I absolutely have to.
God, this post makes me sound like a fat asshole ![]() I was speaking idiomatically. ![]() |

Looks pretty sweet.
HOWEVER, do you see the little gold colored contact point on the battery cover? That spot is going to get gunked up with dirt and sweat, and you'll probably have to clean it off every time you set the remote back in the charging station. I just know how sensitive some of these no-plug chargers can be, my cordless home phone has to be set in just the right position or it doesn't charge. FELIPE NO |
I don't know in how far gook/sweat is going to cover that gold thing, though. The back of my Wiimote is completely clean. Wiimote isn't a real word according to Firefox, it wants to change it to Timoteo, which isn't even a real word either! Anyway, I clamored for these things, and there they are. Regardless of details, I'm happy! What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
Yeah, I despise those gold contacts too. What's even worse is some of the really shitty quality ones will explode from body heat. No joke. I had some for my GBA and they burned a hole in my pants.

So I suppose that rechargable's still pwn, whats so hard of taking them out and letting them charge for an hour?

OK, I need some advise regarding the Wii:
My family has owned all Japanese consols my entire life, except for the SNES since the earlier models were able to play Japanese cartridges as long as you broke off some parts of the plastic stoppers. Any consol we bought, it was no question that we had to buy one that supported Japanese games, because that's what we played. I'm considering buying the Wii, and I can get my hands on a Japanese one for about $400 US dollars including shipping. My question is, would it be worth it? Getting the games for it isn't that hard considering I live in the Los Angeles area, but would my boyfriend (who totally can't understand Japanese) be able to enjoy it with me too?? Please advise, thanks!! Most amazing jew boots |
Like any console, there are plenty of games that could be played without being able to read the language. Hell, it may even be a blessing to enjoy Elebits without having to listen to the crappy voice acting. Anything other than RPGs and games like Zelda could probably be figured out easily enough with an FAQ, and I know from experience with Kenshin Dragon Quest that the DQ Heroes game would still be fun in Japanese.
The biggest advantage to owning a Japanese Wii would be the Virtual Console. As you can see, every region except Japan is currently getting shafted on the SNES selection. It really comes down to whether or not your boyfriend is willing to put in a bit of extra effort to play the games. Hell, you could always just buy a Japanese Wii and an American Wii for only a little more than the cost of a PS3. I was speaking idiomatically. ![]() |
Um totally wrong thread for this, shorty. I'll answer your question though.
The only advantage I see for getting a $400 Japanese Wii is the virtual console. Japan is getting tons of Virtual Console games that we are probably not ever going to see (Fire Emblem yada yada) and they are getting their games before anyone else. They had The Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past at launch. AT LAUNCH. We still don't have it. Basically Virtual Console support in the US is kind of pathetic right now. That could change in the future but for immediate benefits a Japanese Wii can only connect to a Japanese server and get Japanese Virtual Console games. The US Wii can only connect to a US server and get US Virtual Console games. Regioning sucks but as a result that's one advantage to owning a Japanese Wii. Since you understand Japanese that secures that advantage. However in regards to your boyfriend if there are any text heavy/text dependent games you're going to have to translate for him where necessary for him to enjoy those games. Otherwise it'll be scattered gameplay with an overdose of moonspeak for him. The actual Wii games on the other hand are a mixed bag. A lot of them are very visual even in instructions that he could easily follow along, play, and have fun. Games like Wario Ware Smooth Moves, Rayman Raving Rabbids, Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz, Wii Sports, Wii Play, and just about any mini-game oriented game will be completely fine in Japanese. It's games that have a lot of story and/or dialog that will decrease in enjoyment. Sure, you can easily play Twilight Princess without understanding the text but you'll miss some of the story, any hints, and quite possibly get lost without being given direction through dialog. There is a lot of cinematography that'll cue you where you need to go but for times where that just isn't enough to tell you what to do it could be frustrating. That said, I see a few scenarios of how you might play the Wii with your boyfriend. You and your boyfriend are playing together. For that to happen it's most likely a multiplayer game and all games for Wii that are multiplayer don't have much of a focus or heavy dependency on text. You'll be hunky dory there. However if either of you are playing a single player game that requires the understanding of the Japanese language to easily progress or enjoy the game to the fullest like Twilight Princess than you will need to translate on the fly for him. That's a definite if he's playing the game but if he just wants to watch you play then that's a maybe. You'll have to translate if he asks you what's going on or if a character said something important. It's a matter if he's even interested. The one thing you need to keep in mind with this purchase is that you will not be able to get US Virtual Console games nor will you be able to play US Wii games until a Freeloader solution comes out which probably won't be for quite some time. It wouldn't be a terrible thing to have a second Wii if your boyfriend really wants to play Wii games in English. However, that's up to you all to figure out gaged on what kind of games he ends up playing more. If it's just multiplayer then probably not but if he starts playing big epic games like Zelda all the time then he'll want to understand what the hell is going on and that's where you come in to translate Japanese for him or a purchase of a US Wii and a whole bunch of translation teams do your job. Keep that in mind. I'll now move your post, Tritoch's post, and my post from "I'm postin' on mah Wii! =D" to the Official Nintendo Wii thread. After that I'll PM you about this move. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
Thanks guys!! I didn't expect an immediate answer, but the extremely fast response is VERY much appreciated!!! <3 <3 <3
Yes, I was looking at your list of VC games and I couldn't help but cry out in nostalgia for some of the games listed in the Japanese section. I mean, I pine for some of them simply just because my old consoles are not so reliable any more but I still want to play those games. I figured that my bf's only going to be spending time with me at my place for about 3-4 hours during an evening (we don't see each other much simply due to confilicting work/school scheudles) and half of that is usually involved in making dinner for the two of us, so logistically RPG's would not be a good choice of game to play together...that leads to interactive games like sports or racing games. Those I believe don't involve too much "reading" per say involved, so I don't mind translating the "go here for options" and such. A lot of the Japanese games released for the SNES (like Mario Kart) have been relatively language barrier-free, so I figured if those VC games are available where it doesn't involve too much text, then that's a major plus for me since my father would definitely want to play these and if my boyfriend who can't speak a dime of Japanese can interact with my dad with abismal English skills and bond through playing the Wii, it would be a very ideal situation for me. Thanks guys! I think I'll opt for the Japanese consol, but I'll hold off on the purchase until I see a definite game that makes me want to play it before it's released in the States, or if there was some way I can connect on a US Server with a Japanese consol (high hopes, I know). ![]() FELIPE NO |
Well good luck to ya, but you'll have to hold out on connecting to a US server with a Japanese console. That won't come until someone figures out how to mod the hell out of the machine or with some kind of caharazaaay Freeloader device that figures out how to override the system region code and choose which server to connect to for Virtual Console games. Right now you're stuck with the options I've shown you.
I'd say with your situation that a Japanese Wii is the better decision. If you have any other issues or questions feel free to come back here and ask. Enjoy your Wii when it arrives. =) What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
Here's some speculation.
First off, Valve praises the Wii. Secondly, IGN spills some beans:
"Main FPS franchises" really doesn't say much, as one could name plenty: FarCry (which already sucks), CoD (got it), MoH (announced), F.E.A.R., ect. I'm hoping for something bigger yet, a.k.a. Unreal/Doom/Quake? Jam it back in, in the dark. |
I'd say it's more likely to be Half Life as Valve is simply porting an old HL2 title to PS3 and such, while they are making an Unreal Tournament game for the other systems.
Basically, I'm picturing Elebits right now for an easy visual. But a gravity/portal gun. *drools over Portal* With Nintendo having a so-so lineup for 2007 with the exceptions of a few games that we'd jizz our pants over (Mario, Metroid, Super Smash), I'm thinking some really cool titles like this are going to be announced later to trounce competition's release of some PC ports. ![]() There's nowhere I can't reach. ![]() |
Finally finished Twilight Princess a few minutes ago. A fantastic ending to a fantastic game.
Bring on the next one, I say! This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. ![]() Anime lover, gamer, and dreamer |
Just wanted to mention that apparently EB/Gamestop are getting a big shipment in today (Sunday)... So I'm going to be attempting to pick one up finally! Wish me luck

Yes! Finally got a Wii at Target this morning.
I find it funny that there was no line created because of the cold damn weather until 10 minutes before the store opens. LOL I'll be posting my Wii code soon. FELIPE NO |
Nice to hear that you both got a Wii. Congrats and enjoy this system's greatness as we all have been.
What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
Ditto on the Wii get over here, got to the store at 9 to wait for the 11 opening hour. And it was worth it. Got Zelda and Warioware and both games are fun and awesome.
