If nothing else, it confirms that Yoshi is coming back. Of course I'm sure they wouldn't have cut him anyway. He wasn't in the trailers, right? I haven't watched them in a long time.

Bumper - Could be Pinball
Cloak - Got me
Ray Gun - Starfox
Paper Fan - I KNEW this was from something . . .
Beam Sword - Bleh?

Okay, so maybe not EVERY item, but darn close!
Bumper - Kirby's Pinball Land. It wasn't actually in the game, but was in the intro right before the title screen showed up.

Cloak - It's from Perfect Dark.

Ray Gun - I wouldn't exactly say that this is from Star Fox since the pilots were never playable (except the unlockable 'on-foot' VS. mode in Star Fox 64, and even then they used a giant bazooka-like gun that shot yellow spiraling lasers) and they were never showed with a gun in either Star Fox or Star Fox 64.

Paper Fan - Could be Peach's War Fan from Super Mario RPG except that it doesn't cause as much damage.

Beam Sword - Star Wars Light Saber rip off? :/

Apparently, someone said the references to Perfect Dark were removed in the American version of SSBM. Even the Motion Sensor Bomb in the Japanese version looked like the mine from Perfect Dark.

Edit: Picture here, apparently.
Yeah, as far as I know, the Cloaking Device and Proximity Mine in the American version of SSBM reference the American versions of Perfect Dark and Goldeneye 007 respectively. But in the Japanese version of SSBM, I think they either look different and/or were meant to reference a different game. Like you said, the Proximity Mine was probably supposed to reference something of a similar nature in Perfect Dark. Not sure about what the Cloaking Device is supposed to reference in the Japanese version though. Because of this confusion (and probably copyright issues too) North America's localization team just made the original "TOP SECRET" for both items. So...as far as that picture goes, it was either photoshopped or it was obtained through Action Replay.

Anyway, the Cracker Launcher looks pretty sweet. However, I hope they keep the newly created items to a minimum. Super Smash Bros. games need to be based on original ideas and concepts created in previous Nintendo games, not glorified through the creation of new ideas and concepts.

Speaking of which...

I DON'T LIKE. The flying platform stages makes sense for Mute City and the Flying Halbred, but Delfino Plaza? Come on now! I was hoping for a Super Mario Sunshine stage, and I got what I wanted, but Mario never went up in the air like that! It makes no sense for the stage environment that it's in! Arg!

Looks like today's update told us about teh Pokeballz and MOTHERFUCKIN GROUDON.

So Pokeball matches won't be forgotten. I always found those a riot...

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

The newest update just went up; info on Kirby and Pikachu.

Quote:
This is Kirby, Warp Star-riding citizen of Dream Land who can suck up anything. His copy abilities allow him to steal the powers of other characters!

Yeah... He’s the only character who really hasn’t changed much from his appearance in Super Smash Bros. Melee. He’s round, pink, and soft.
Quote:
With perfectly round cheeks and a jagged tail,
this can only be that most familiar of Pokémon, Pikachu!

It may be small and agile, but its electricity gives it powerful attacks.
It’s what you would call an all-around character.
Not much info. Kirby might be dropping down in viability a bit though, if he's not changing all that much. We'll see how the new copy moves work out, I guess *shrug*

I was speaking idiomatically.

Yeah a lot less information than I was expecting for those chars. Didn't really tell us anything. And personally I thought Kirby totally blew in the last game so I'm hoping they change him up even a little bit this time around.

Now all we need to see is fox then we'll be on to the characters that we have a lot more questions about.

I think they mean that he's not changing much in appearance. Remember the first trailer where all the characters go through their transformation? Kirby is the only one who really doesn't change at all (even Pikachu gets a tiny update).

Yeah, Kirby looks around like "uh what the hell, well okay"

I hope they don't drop his vitality AGAIN. He was underpowered in the last game and a tad overpowered in the first game. Somewhere in-between would be nice.

Exactly. In the first Smash Bros., he was ridiculously strong, but in Melee, he's my worst character, and I'm good with every character...except Kirby. I can never really pull off any good combos with him and I always get KO-ed at less than 100% damage. Even Jigglypuff, Pichu and Mr. Game & Watch survive better than Kirby. If they don't make him have better moves then I hope that they at least make him harder to KO.

I was hoping for the same thing. But at the same time, I can kind of see why they didn't give Pikachu fur. He didn't have any in the anime, or in the Pokemon Stadium games or in any of the cover art he's been on. That and realistic furry Pokemon would just seem...I don't know...weird.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Yea I never could seem to really get a good combo with Kirby...his moves were awkward, very unrewarding(weak) and very predictable. Ah well..hope they change him up

Considering how extremely vague that is, I'll hope/guess you're referring to the controls for the game:

Yeah, it's by far the most interesting on the site yet. It was never clear whether the Gamecube controller would be required to play, now we have the answer.

Actually, I'm very curious as to how they're going to make the game work with the Wiimote without the nunchuck attachment, since there seems to be a few more button commands than buttons required. I see it turning out to have lots of motion-based commands for things like jumping and smash attacks, since it wouldn't have analogue control. Doesn't seem to be a good control style, but it's good that they included it anyway, for people (me) who can't get their hands on extra nunchucks.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Today's update was the best for the week. How would they be able to handle wiimote sideways though?

My guess is:
-1 = special
-2 = normal
-B = shield
-B+2 = grab

-Jump/D/L/R = Dpad
-Double L/R = Smash

The other control options seem awesome. Can't wait to try out the nun-chuck and wiimote combo, although I might go back to the GCN control for competitions.

Yup I'm quoting myself! It was a dry week and now we have a very exciting announcement! Now skills with characters will be connected to the choice of control as well. This is wild! I'm excited about using the Classic controller, actually. I knew I bought that thing for some reason! It's a great little design without all the fluff.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Wow. This is indeed interesting. Perhaps there's different mode that require to only use the Wiimote or Nunchuck+Wiimote.

Basically most of you can go to sleep for 2 weeks before any "new" characters are added.
