I'm not so much for the honorifics as I am for the rank. Still I don't know why Bandai Visuals recent release of the Patlabor movies have changed Gotoh's and Shinobu's rank from "Captain" - Tai Chou - to Commander.

Using some Google, Wikipedia and translators, it would seem that the (equivalent of the) rank Captain is called taii (大尉) in Japanese, and that taichou (隊長) equals squad chief or commanding officer which, if I'm not entirely mistaken, is not actually a rank. Since 'commanding officer' is a bit long to put in the subtitles and would sound quite silly in the dub, they shortened it to commander; as in commander of the unit, not the rank of Commander.

Or something.

I should try to find somewhere on the net to consult the Japanese police heirarchy of ranks are, in English of course. Perhaps your explanation is the most logical one, as this might be actually how subordinates address their superiors that command them in the Japanese mindset.

Can anyone tell me where this song is from?

I'm fairly certain it's from Scryed, but I wanted to make sure.

Seems not to be, unless the two soundtracks are missing some of the tracks, and that doesn't much sound like Kotaro Nakagawa who composed music for Scryed. Still, I could be wrong, knowing that I haven't yet watched the series.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

XDDDD Funny thing is, I was JUST watching the anime this song comes from --

It's the "I'm about to win this fight!" theme from Mobile Fighter, G Gundam. Knew it was within the first half second. XD

I knew it was something in Cartoon Network that involved robots. Thanks.

Might as well ask the next question. I've been interested in checking out Fist of the North Star. The only media I've seen involving the series was the extremely gory movie in the early '90s. So now it's hard to keep track with all the OVAs, TV shows, and so forth released afterwards. I've also heard some of the adaptions are crap and aren't worth watching, so I'd like a fan's opinion on which anime adaptions are worth checking out and which I should avoid.

Have you seen s-CRY-ed by any chance? They kept Kanami calling Kasuma Kasu-kun. Also in a few other Bandai shows they kept honorifics in as well if I remember right. And let us not forget the characters that have full names that are made up of ___+honorific. For instance, Milk-chan, Kami-sama (Sayuki Reload), and Kuroneko-sama (Trigun).

s-CRY-ed was pure shit. I only watched a few episodes before I was sick so I don't remember much from it. As long as using honorifics in dubs stays minimal and obscure I will be happy.

Well, I always reckon the original series from 1984 - 1987 is best so I guess you should try to get your hands on them. There's around 109 episodes from Hokuto no Ken and another 43 episodes from Hokuto no Ken 2 (1987 - 1988) which is kind of a sequel (Bat and Lynn have grown up). These are the best to see. The Anime movie which came out in 1986 was made before the first series ended and so is pretty much a retelling of the series with an alternate ending. The special effects in the movie were more impressive (the gore was increased too, probably because they didn't have to worry about TV censorship).

There was a live-action movie too, but the less said about that the better. We just think of it as a bad dream.....

I liked the manga series as well which was pretty incredible! Almost completely the same as the TV series although there was a slight difference in the end of Hokuto no Ken 2.

The 3-part OVA which came out in 2003 introduced some pretty updated animation and impressive CG to update the franchise to the new millenium. Unfortunately, the story was shit.

So, my recommendation: See the Hokuto no Ken TV series. If you've seen the movie you'll be able to see how the story stayed almost exactly true until almost near the end. Hokuto no Ken 2 isn't a must, but if you're eager to see how things turned out after the first series, 2 isn't a bad watch either.

Avoid the live-action. And the OVA.

Here's something that has been bugging me for a very long time now, mainly because of ignorance of not buying anime that often, if rarely ever.
Generally when an anime TV series comes out on DVD, especially for the 1st DVD of the set, I see that there's a regular edition for lets say $23.00, followed by a more "premium" package with a few extras for lets say $30.00, which I still find somewhat resonable. But then there's sometimes this huge ass brick that often I get fooled into thinking its the entire season, but lo and behold, it feels so light - only to contain one DVD and perhaps a small thingamagig. WHOP. $50 for this brick. Excuse my ignorance for not knowing what's so special about something that will take up like 5 DVD cases and is labelled "COLLECTORS SPECIAL EDITION" just for one DVD. After reading the contents of what makes this so special, I wonder, what the hell is the rest of the box? =0. I've seen one with a T-shirt. Wow. But what other explanation for the hulking thing, besides for the die hard fan to go "Zomg I must now clear way on my shelf to fit this monster of a thing"
I could see the justification for the box set for say, the Patlabor 1 and 2 LE by Honneamise, since it comes with the Archives and Storyboard for each movie, and you can see what you're getting, so you don't just feel like paying extra for more cardboard. Please, educate me.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

It's mainly just so you can collect the rest of the volumes as they come out and put them in the box as well. I find them completely useless, as they don't really add anything extra (except some extra artwork, big whoop), and they take up a little more space than just having the volumes themselves.

Ah, that makes more sense. But then I don't really need the box unless it's one of those fold out types or a thinpak. I'd only go for the boxset if well, it contains all the DVDs for that set, since those generally are cheaper than getting the DVDs by themselves, from what I observed after compairing prices.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

That didn't really answer things though. Is that a movie or series? Is it available in english yet?

As for my real question, I'm interested in buying Giant Robo on DVD. There are two packages I can purchase, a Premium Eye Collection...

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...099144?ie=UTF8

Or the cheapter Economy Pack

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...099144?ie=UTF8

My question is: Does anyone know if the Economy Pack contains the original Manga Entertainment dub along with the new dub and original japanese? I know the Eye Collection has both dubs, but I'm not sure about the Economy Pack.

Also, what is your opinion on the new dub versus the original? I've been too hesitant to check out the DVDs on account of all the voices being replaced (not even Steven Blum? this was his best work!), so that's why I want to have the original available. Please help me out.

OH GOD YES.

Ahem. Well, I found a scanslation of Houshin Engi a couple years ago and had it on my hard drive. Read it all, enjoyed it thoroughly (the anime's good as well, but not nearly as deep as the manga), and my drive failed. Come to think of it, my very first ava/sig combo (the only one i've ever gotten in trouble for having it too large as well) was from Houshin Engi. It had Taikoubou wielding his Daishinben....I think that's what it was called anyway.

Anybody watched Shura no Toki? Any good? Thought about nabbing the boxset.

Edit: For rememberence.

Is it a more kiddy shonen series like DBZ or on the more serious side?

I believe it was published in Shonen Jump! for a while, but it's not quite the same as DBZ. Actually it's loosely based in Chinese mythology around the downfall of the Zhou Dynasty -- emperor losing his mind to an enchanting demon whose only desire was luxury and destruction.

The characters are far more likable and memorable than other Shonen Jump runs though. Several of them have a lot of depth and backstory, and it's unique how some of the more interesting plot points get resolved.

I'd really like to see Houshin Engi get licensed and published in America. If One Piece, Naruto, and DBZ all get the treatment, Houshin Engi more than deserves it.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Sailor Moon was first a manga, which spanned 18 (?) volumes. The anime version was adapted from that, and ran for 394863868646 seasons (check ANN or something for a more accurate listing).

I dont Get the ending of "the end of evangelion", Its just Shinji and Asuka...
She appears dead, then she says, "You disgust me" or something like that. Is she dead or not? and then has a cast and an Eye patch on, and people have said that she represents all three girls. But Im not sure if its true. I thought that they were sapposed to be the new Adam and Eve. If anyone knows, of can direct me to a site that has the awnsers I would appreciante it.

Oh well, hopefully it'll get reissued like the others did back in November...
Actually, I finally just found more info on it. It appears to be a "Story Version" of the 1989 series, with drama, songs and karaoke. Not sure if it's worth the price it usually ends up going for, but it looks to include the opening theme and that might be worth the cost since I have found it on no other CDs.

Check the link below if you think you can help out with the translation of the track titles. Thanks!
