RahXephon and Evangelion are both quite good, so if you ever do get a free moment - and you feel like giving Rah another chance - I'd recommend picking it back up. If not, then have fun watching the umpteenth re-release special limited edition Director's Cut volume 245 of Evangelion. XD
HEY, its only the 10th ani. special and its ONLY $250! and its only coming out in like a month o.o...at least hes not like Rei and has like 8 copies already.
and yeah, there is no reason to stop a series midway through, you should finish it, so you know iff you accualy hate it or not, because the fact that you didnt fnish it means your oppinon is only on half of the series, which not near as accuart as watching all of it. i mean, just look at how diffirent eva would have been if it ended at ep 24? its not like anything 'happens' persay in the last 2 episodes. this one has some unexpected twists and at midde way through becomes much more intiresting...you havnt even reallly meet Bähbem yet, creepy old man.

I have too many series to watch at the moment to get back into Rah. While Eva is one of my favorites I don't consider it to be one of the greatest of all time. In fact, I can't really name many anime that deserve to be on a list like that. Maybe, Grave of the Fireflies, Akira, and Princess Monokoe, but thats about it. There are a select few great anime, but to be considered the greatest you need to be something special.

Anyway, I have the 10th Aniversary edition of Eva preorder from discountanimedvd.com for $187.48. Why? I really don't know. Maybe, it's the fanboy in me.

Nice. Thanks for the info aku. Unfortunately, I use PayPal for my Internet ordering needs. Might switch it over to googlecheckout when they get more reliable though. So my ordering sites are limited.

Hello

Can someone help me with Rurouni Kenshin OAV?

I bought a 4 VCD set with 30, 15, 30, .. minute episode. I hear the music of the first OAV but I didn''t hear music of the second OAV. So I assume that what I saw is the first OAV which is almost 1:30 long and it's about this scar kenshin is getting. So I think there is still an OAV 2 that I have to see. Is this true? I'm asking this because I ask in every store of Hong Kong about the seisouhen OAV 2 and noone seems to know about this episode... and neither can I find this OAV 2...

There's nowhere I can't reach.

The Rurouni Kenshin OVA consists of three parts. Trust, Betrayal, and Reflection. The first two parts are both an hour long while Reflection is an hour and a half. You can buy all three parts together or separately from ADV. I have purshased the Director's Cut Thin Pak DVD release. It contains Trust and Betrayal on one disc with Reflection on another disc. Don't be confused by them calling it Samurai X.

Here it is for $10 off. Samurai X Director's Cut Collection

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Ah, kinda foshi. The before series OVA consistes of 4 30 mins episodes, and the last OVA is like 1 hour, which takes place AFTER teh series, for those who dont know and you can pick them up at DDDVD for less than 30 USD
It was renamed SAMURAI X, for legal reason(Rurouni Kenshin is property of animeworks). and there is a SAMURAI X movie, that takes place in the middle of the seires. after the Legend of Kyoto arc.

The Director's Cut has those four episodes spliced together into a two hour feature called Trust and Betrayal. Reflection is an hour and a half and recaps the big moments of the Rurouni Kenshin television series while adding in a definite ending.

From what I hear here I should have Trust and Betrayal and still have to see Reflection which is called Seisouhen. Too bad no shop in Hong Kong has this in store... maybe a recap isn't as hot as a real story, but the music sure is great!

I've been wanting to get a few DVD titles from Manga Entertainment. Namely, Ninja Scroll, Macross Plus- Movie Edition, and Ghost in the Shell - the Movie, as well as Stand Alone Complex series (1st and 2nd season), all which I have seen.

I have the Patlabor 1 and 2 releases from Manga, which now have basically been rendered "never to be seen again" due to my recent purchase of the Bandai Visual versions.

Basically, what type of quality can I expect from Manga, as I've only experienced their release quality with the Patlabor films?

I have all of those shows you mentioned. Manga has high quality releases. The picture is bright and clear, usually fullscreen, and the sound a crisp 5.1. They also have good high quality English dubs with great VA's. Ghost in the Shell 1st and 2nd Gig are great and beautiful on DVD with some of the best English dubbing i've heard.

Well I popped by HMV and got Perfect Blue for $15, and plus I've seen it and wanted to see it again, just for kicks (lol tease-dancing). Too bad that was the only manga release I saw for the 2 for $30 deal. The other movie I bought to fulfill that deal was Pulp Fiction, just incase you were curious.

Manga's Ninja Scroll should be decent (I think only the UK release was cut), but you might want to be cautious of Ghost in the Shell movie.
If it's anything like mine, it has dubtitles only, and since Manga took quite a lot of liberties with the dub, there's often subtitles popping up when no one is saying anything on the japanese track.

Oh, well since Manga is the only one that has the GITS movie released in NA, well, it's a hell lot better than the Hong Kong versions I've seen. Also, seeing Patlabor 1 on VCD was a horrible experience. God. I watched a few scenes of Perfect Blue and it seems alright. You can bet which scene I forwarded to LOL.

The rape scene in Perfect Blue isn't all that hot. Definitely, not something worth fapping to. The movie itself though is excellent and quite intriguing.

There are two versions of the GITS movie. A special edition and then the regular release. There is no reason to buy the special edition. It's $15 more and only has a couple of unneeded extras.

I had the regular version of GitS, but I still bought the Special Edition anyway. If you really like the movie (it's like my favorite movie of all time), I'd say it's worth it. The picture and sound quality are better, it comes with a second disc full of extras (behind the scenes documentary, trailers, etc.), and it comes with a cool poster! And it's not really $15 more, the MSRP is only $5 more than the regular edition (but I was still able to get it for $10, which was less than what I bought the regular edition for). If you're gonna get it, I'd say spring for the Special Edition.

At HMV, the GITS movie selling for $29.99 CDN for the SE, and $24.99 for the Regular. So I mean for $5 more....

The AKIRA Special Edition is pretty expensive though at $50 for the box thing. The Signature Series from Pioneer ( the cheap cheap one) is like $19.99 CDN.

Also, yeah, about Perfect Blue, it's not as .... hot as I last remembered it. Maybe all those H are swaying things differently from what I remembered. Like what, 3 years since I last saw PB.

It's definitely worth it for just $5 more. You know, because of the cool poster!

I got the Akira Signature Series DVD at Wal-Mart for $7.50, but I still haven't watched it yet. I haven't even been abe to find the Special Edition Box thingy though, so that's why I decided to just go with the cheap one.

How big exactly is this poster. Like a post card or what. At least if it's of the Major in her famous "nudie-gun-pose", then that's cool. Quite a few years back, I bought a Hong Kong release of the AKIRA movie. WORSE. SUBTITLES. EVER. LOL.

The front of the poster is basically the Special Edition DVD cover (which includes her in the "nudie-gun-pose"), and the back is a picture of her during the opening credits of the film (you know, when her cyborg body is being created, meaning there's more nudity!). It's a regular-sized poster, meaning it's bigger than a postcard, but not as big as a huge wall scroll or anything. Funny you should mention a postcard though, as there is one of those included as well.

Meh, looks like $29.99 going to be somewhat well spent. I've only seen that movie like 5 times LOL. And I think that's when I rented it from Rogers like 4 years ago, either that or the VHS tape from WAAAY back in high school from a friend.

Why do so many fansubbers insist on using terms like Onii-chan, -san, -kun, and -sama in their subtitles? Is it really necessary? Why can't they just translate the persons name or spell out "big brother," or "mom?" It really annoys me because I can hear what is being said by the voice actor. I don't need them to spell it out for me; just translate it.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.
Old Jul 29, 2006, 09:15 AM #148 of 241
Because honorifics don't always translate that well into English. It's just easier to leave them as is and understand them as their native terms.

In fact Del Rey, imo the most professional manga company in the US, states on the first couple pages of every volume honorifics and what they mean. They use them consistantly throughout their books and it just works out better. They do a lot of other good things like keep jokes in their native forms if they can if they can't do it all the way they have tons of cultural notes at the end of a volume or chapter.

Probably, you're so used to official anime dvds that for the most part don't use honorifics in subtitles because they have to americanize things for their audience. Sometimes though a gem will pass through where they'll leave in honorifics in the subtitles and even do so in the English dub. Sometimes it works for the dub and sometimes it just sounds weird. Depends on if the VAs can figure out how to pronounce Japanese names in the first place but whatever.

Foshi, honorifics are just something you get used to and once you have it makes it seem more authentic.

Come back when you have something about fansubbers that's more legitimate of a complaint.

Like this...

I have never heard an official English dub use Japanese honorifics and when I do I will stop watching dubbed anime. It doesn't matter to me if they have honorifics in manga or not as long as they have a translation page or something that tells me what they mean.

I really don't mind the honorifics as much as fansubbers not translating words to say, "big brother/sister", or "mother", "father."

How does it make it seem more authentic? I can hear them say it so I don't need them to put it in the subtitle untranslated.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Probably just a semi-elitist thing I guess. Really, it's something you get used to and don't care too much if it's there or not. It's just nice if it is. If they can translate honorifics without it sounding dumb, I'm fine with that too. But yeah, I can't remember what shows but sometimes they do use honorifics in dubs and it's really hit or miss with the miss making it really awful. Don't stop watching dubs because of that though. That'd be silly. Just watch a show in each language and see what you like better. There are good dubs out there; don't become prejudice.
