I forgot to ask, but can the Wii do 720p and 1080i, or just 480p?
There's nowhere I can't reach. |
I wonder that myself because it is only stated that Wii can do 480p and 480i but that was said about the PS2 and PS2 has a game that runs in 1080i (Grand Turismo 4).
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
Went to Best Buy at 5:45 AM with my mom. Had a bunch of people in line, but not nearly enough to take up all the Wiis, as Best Buy was getting 100. Got in line, this nice Korean guy before us said we were the first new people to come in an entire hour. We took a quick count, there were a little over 35 people before us. More people started arriving shortly after us. At about 7 AM, the Best Buy head dude came, counted us. Said that there were well under 100 people so we were all guaranteed to get one. Also said if anyone pulled any BS like at the PS3 launch, he'd toss them outta there.
He came back at about 8, handed us our vouchers, then my mom drove off to get some damn food! I was number 46 out of about 55-60 people at the time. At around 8:30 even more people started arriving and they were still able to get systems, but the console definitely sold out by 9 AM. The head guy was extremely happy that we were all well behaved. We formed a line, no pushing and shoving, all the Wii games and accesories and other stuff were laid out on a big table. We walked past and picked up whatever we wanted, went to the registers, grabbed a console, and paid. So along with the console I got Zelda, Red Steel, a classic controller, and Wii Points card with 2000 on it. Came out to about $409. System updated and I'm about to buy Solomon's Key for my mom (it's her favorite game, she kicks my ass at it). Gonna try out Wii Sports soon. Weirdest comment(s) in the line today must've been "I don't want to get Red Steel because you can choose if you want to kill someone or let them live, we should just be able to kill everyone," "I want to get Smackdown because wrestling is cool and has variety. Smash Bros. Brawl is a must-have game, too! I can't stand fighting games, though, they're too repetitive. All you do is punch, kick, grab...with wrestling games you can throw!" All said by the same guy. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
Well I hoped that I could get a Wii, but I've had no luck all day. I tried Walmart, Future Shop, Zellers, and even London Drugs. I also checked out a bunch of smaller stores. There is no best buy, or target and all these other stores of that sort, and there were only about 10 Wiis per store. I am now playing with my new Wii controller and nunchuck while looking at the cover of Twilight Princess... I hope I get one soon

So when are we getting some system impressions?
Also scotty, props to your sig. Excellent work. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
I'd be more than happy to talk about the console considering I spent far too long in the cold to stay quiet about it, but what are you interested in hearing about?
The interface is ridiculously simple, which is good from a non-gamer's perspective, but sort of saddening for technophiles. Still, you'll find a lot of the same, basic features in the 360 and PS3 interface...s. System updating and announcements, online shop, that sort of thing. The really strange thing to me is the lack of a logo opening. Does the Wii even have one, guys? I don't see shit when I boot up the console or play Wii Sports. The system browser is just the Wii Channels and System Settings. From the start, you have the Disc Channel (the game you have in the console, essentially), the Mii Channel, Photo Channel, and Shop Channel. Weather and News Channels are sitting on the front page, but the system update to grant access doesn't exist yet. There's a shitload of blank slots which, I'm assuming, are for future Channels. System settings doesn't have much to it. Just personal settings you entered when you first start the console up, the option to reset them, and data storage settings. You've got the internal memory and SD slot for that. That makes me wonder what the USB slots are for, though. Nothing in the browser really gives an indication of what it does. Oh, and what the hell is this Wii Bulletin Board system the console keeps referencing to? FELIPE NO

I've had the chance to play with this since about 12:30am after going through the unwrapping and setting up process... and crashed around 3am... and started up again around 9am (short break to run and pick up breakfast).
I have two Mii's created. One for me and one for my wife. Was simple to create... just didn't realize that you had to select Quit when you were finished in order to save it. That's my big gripe on that part of it... I see Quit and it means just that... quit... no save... Went through the process of setting up my wireless connection last night. Installing it was easy... typing in my WEP key on a wireless controller? Not so easy... especially for someone who was on their fifth pint of Guinness and had been awake since 6am the morning prior in order to run amok doing errands all day. Shaky hands not recommended. Had to enter my WEP key twice... but got it set up fine. I did notice though that it locked into a port that I had been using for my FTP server... found that a bit odd as I had to change the port of my server O_o Wii Sports was the first game plugged in... and played by the three people alive in my place last night. It allowed for us to get used to the controls. And was funny to see my wife kick my brother's ass in boxing... and I proceeded to kick his ass in tennis. And I took my "fitness test" today... my fitness age is 63... apparently I'm ancient... O_o Next up was Twilight Princess... this game is going to take some getting used to with the Wii-mote. Move and turn using the nunchuk... perform certain functions with the A button... yeah... mid-30's... brain lost some of it's ability to kick ass like that a while ago. ^_~ Today was more Wii Sports and playing with the Virtual Console... Spent some time working on my bowling, tennis, and golf game. Bowling is going to become my bitch... or visa versa. I've already got an aggravated left shoulder. So bowling with the Wii-mote isn't helping it at all... in fact I think I was in more pain after bowling than any of the other sports played. Tennis is going to take some getting used to for me I think... I enjoy it... just getting the sensor bar to recognize my backhand a bit better would make me happy. Golf... I shot a round of golf... and ended +3 after nine holes. A lot better than if I wee to shoot on an actual course. Only issue I had with that one was when I was putting it would sometimes not even swing the putter when I was moving the Wii-mote. Might have to move the sensor bar down lower? Maybe... When I picked up my Wii and Twilight Princess last night I just had to get a Wii Points card. $20 for 2000 points. Redeeming the points was easy... nothing overly difficult... And buying the VC games was just as easy... of course I had to get Legend of Zelda... and got Wario's Woods for the wife which she is playing right now before the Ducks game at 5. Over all impressions? I really like this console. It seems to have taken a little bit of everything and tossed it into a mixture that could appeal to people of all ages. I was really enjoying the golfing and bowling... two sports that I prefer not to partake in out in the real world... but will glady do embarassingly in front of my huge front window for all the world to see me making a fool of myself... ^_^ The games available thus far for the Wii and VC aren't all up to par yet. Twilight Princess will take some time for me to get used to the controls... I picked up Trauma Center today along with my second Wii-mote but have not had the chance to pop it in yet... and Elebits comes out in two weeks. The VC games only have a couple of titles I'm interested in now... and the Wii Channels are sparse for now... and I'm not totally sure on how to see other Mii's roaming about on my console... Will the options improve over time? From what we are hearing... yes... over the next few months. So for now it's just a waiting game... and a time for me to play around and try to improve my golf score (need to bring that thing under par)... What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
I hope Acer did better than me, because Tucson is still completely gone. I've made a list of places I can call and get to on my lunch break and a list of ones I could try after work. I'd really like to have one by Wednesday so I can enjoy it over the entire weekend.
I did take the advice of buying games early and picked up copies of Zelda and BIG DAMN TRUCKS. Circuit City was completely out of classic controllers, though, so that was all I ended up getting. Circuit City did have a neat promotion to get a $10 gift card for buying two games, so I guess today wasn't completely wasted. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
Target has a similar deal, except it's a $20 gift card.
There's nowhere I can't reach. |
I haven't had any time to play anything yet except a few games of Wii Sports, but it's a blast. It even looks a lot better than I expected; leagues above Gamecube. Particularly, it's very smooth; must be at least 4X AA. How ya doing, buddy? ![]() Bless the Maker and His water. Bless the coming and the going of Him. |
Nice impressions so far, though I guess there isn't much to say about the Wii that you didn't already read. That said, I do have a few questions.
1. What exactly where the cons reported in the Zelda review? I've avoided reading any of them on account that I'd like to jump into the game blind. 2. How are Gamecube games on the Wii? Any compatibility problems or resolution boosts? Does the wiimote work on the games, or do you need a GC controller? 3. So it's a sensor, not the TV itself, that reads your remote's actions, right? Does it matter where the sensor is located (on top of the TV?), or not really? 4. Is it even possible to be a supporter of both Nintendo and Sony without showing blood-pissing hatred to one of the companies? Anyone else sick of this whole choosing-sides bullshit that's been plaguing the gaming community the past year? How ya doing, buddy? |
Not sure about one, but I know two and three well enough.
2. Compatability seems fine. No noticeable difference in resolution from where I'm standing. 3. Yeah, a sensor. There's a section for the sensor bar in the Settings menu, which lets you configure it for either being placed on top of the TV or directly below it (which is essential, since a lot of flat-screens don't have the depth to keep the sensor bar on the top). I've tested this myself and the difference is relatively minor, so you might even be able to get away to sticking it onto one of the sides. 4. I guess it's possible, but everyone always has a favorite that they root for in the back of their head. So, yes and no would be the fair answer. Most amazing jew boots |
Thanks. And to add to 2, can you still enable progressive scan when starting up the Gamecube game (by pressing B)?
What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
Well, my wireless network isn't secure (for now) and it detected/connected quite easily. The first update didn't take more than 5 min, while this second update is taking upwards of 10 minutes.
On another note, anyone know what's the use of that clear plastic thing that comes with those sticky pads? FELIPE NO |

Freeloader works with the Wii
From GameFAQs: "By now everyone knows that the Wii is not region free, but fret not. I imported all of the Naruto games on gamecube and had to order a boot disk (Freeloader) to get them to with my gamecube. Got my Wii tonight (I am loving this system so far) and decided to test out my import games. The didnt work using them alone, but I used freeloader and now my import games work on my Wii as if they were on my Gamecube. Word of caution: I inserted the freeloader disk, and selected it from the disc channel, the system read it and restarted. Went back to the disc channel again, selected the freeloader and the system took me to the normal freeloader screen and asked me to swap the disk like normal. I am assuming that the freeloader disc needs to be in the system from the start, or it may restart after the first read. Either way it works, and I will be trading in my gamecube tomorrow." This is excellent, especially for myself, as my entire Gamecube collection (five games, oh wow) is american and I'm living in a PAL location. Most amazing jew boots |
Nice! Now if only the Game Boy Player could be sticky taped onto the Wii, I could throw my GameCube in the bin.
How ya doing, buddy? |
I haven't read much of this thread lately, but I have to ask the question:
Does anyone else's local areas have a handful of Wiimotes in stores, but NO nunchuks to go with them? This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
My store had enough shit to go around with the exception of Classic controllers.

Anyway, I couldn't stand the thought of not having a Wii this weekend so I went and ebay'd one. 385 bucks. If you'd go look you'd say that's actually a good deal since most of the auctions are going well over 450 bucks. Mostly up to 600 bucks. The person I bought from is in PA and I'm in VA so with 2 day shipping I should get it immediatly. I went to the Microcenter in Fairfax and got a Wii controller and classic controller. They were all out of nunchuks by the time I had gotten there. I'll have to look for one of those in the future. I've been saying for a while that the controllers would be one of the big things there wouldn't be enough of and sure enough I'm right. And of course it's also the nunchuk of all things that is the hardest to get. I also got Excite Truck, Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz, and Trauma Center Second Opinion and 2000 Wii Points. After that I went to Toys R Us like I said I would and got Zelda. While on my why home I called the Best Buy at Woodbridge to see if they would still be getting that shipment at 6 PM and it turns out that was just going to Maryland so I said screw that and called it a night for driving around like a maniac. So all I need is a nunchuk, the Wii, and some component cables and I'll be set. I was speaking idiomatically. |

Here's a question. Whats with the system update thing. It's taking forever, and going very, very slow... I guess it could be that every Wii owner is updating right? Safe to turn it off and just play Zelda, and update tomorrow?
FELIPE NO ![]() |
It seemed to take forever for me as well. I played Wii Sports before I downloaded my update and didn't have any problems, so I would think that it would be safe with Zelda as well.
What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? ![]() |
I mean, like, its downloading now. And it sais "do not turn off console" >_> its been 3 hours.
