Is that the animow one? I suppose if the concept's novel I'd be prepared to overlook the design.

Anyway, the launch range is pretty weak when you think about it.

Yeah, the anime design characters are just there for story and dialogue. Beyond that it's all awesome gameplay.

So, I managed to come across a Wii kiosk today at a local Gamestop. The person who was playing when I walked up had to turn in his driver's license to get the controller. But amusingly enough, he just let me take a turn after he was done.

Game in was Excite Truck, seems it's the default title in the kiosks. There was a time when I really loved this game... but, I just wasn't feeling it in actually playing the game.

The framerate seemed to be going far slower than it should have been. Felt almost like a sub-30 rate at times...

Control could've been a lot more precise, especially for wide steering. When on the road, the slight movements worked well, but if I wanted to take a really tight turn, it seemed to crap out past a certain angle, like you just couldn't pull a hard turn at all.

The boosting was really unclear. You pressed and held Up on the D-pad to boost up, which looked to be identical to Motorstorm's turbo where you have a heat gauge. Except that when you overheat in Excite Truck, you just get some shoddy black smoke and slow down a lot. What confused me was that it wasn't too clear when you had to boost to get a bonus on jumps. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. When I DID get a boost and landed perfectly for an extra boost bonus, that's when my next issue popped up...

You will learn to hate trees Apparently they're made out of magnetic titanium. Because any time you so much as brush one, you crash and have to mash on the 2 button to boost back into the course. Why button mashing on a Wii game? Really. In any case, when you first start playing, you're going to average hitting about 5-10 trees per 2-lap race. At least that's what the other guy and myself concluded while playing. Cacti, on the other hand, are apparently made of jell-o and just sploosh away when you hit them.

The exception of course is when you pick up a "Power" icon on the track, which gives you a super nitro boost and lets you plow through trees with the ease of Mr. Cactus.

Difficulty-wise, the game's pretty difficult to get into, and I might have enjoyed it more if I played longer (or at a lower difficulty setting). I either went really slow and got lackluster jumps, or went extremely fast and ended up going off the course due to my lack of steering prowess.

Graphically, (last, since one goes into a Wii game expecting current-gen visuals) the game was still pretty lacking for me. I suppose I'm jaded by Motorstorm, but even on a nice big HDTV, the textures looked soft and underdeveloped. The trucks were very mono-color, though from the outset you choose from about 10 models and 10 colors. The designs aren't incredibly inspired, but they do the job of being big damn trucks.

As a random final note, the controller is so tiny! I was expecting it, but I had no idea how minuscule it would feel in my hands. Not a complaint, just an amusing observation.

Hmm... I've been considering switching my pre-order from Excite Truck to something else, and I might consider it further after reading your impressions. Was it atleast fun once you got into it?

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

The most amusing part was poking fun at how damn resilient the trees were, and how bad I was doing There's potential big fun with four people looking for some entertainment, but I didn't see a massive potential for depth. The play mode seemed to consist entirely of getting stars in courses to "master" them in each of the "Excitement Levels" (Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum). I apparently got half of the stars required to master the Fiji course I played on, despite getting a glorious 6th place out of 6. It didn't seem to care that I didn't place, but I could be wrong. Of course this could also just be a limited demo kiosk version.

This is totally unrelated to the current discussion but I think I know what game I want them to bring out most on the virtual console...TROG!!!! It's such a great game, perfect in it's simplicity but still challenging and fun to play. Getting the pineapple and eating the trogs, priceless

Argh! It's only a month now till the Wii comes out over here... But I don't have the money yet!!!

Of course there's the Virtual Console and all but should I consider selling my good buddy, SNES and Cube? Apart from Nostalgic value, they're pretty much useless if the Virtual Console is going to fill their places. But then again how much would you get from them anyway?

I'm psyched. Unfortunately for me with the exams and all I can't try the Wii out, which was going to be at the station I get off to go to uni. Darn!

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?
Old Nov 5, 2006, 08:19 AM #983 of 1979
Yeah, um don't sell the bicycle shop there, Wilbur. The Wii is not going to have every SNES game. I'd never sell it. The cube on the other hand isn't a bad idea to get some money for since the Wii will play all cube games. Although I'm not sure if it will be able to play import games via free loader or not yet so if you have any import games you might want to hold out and make sure the Wii can still play them via free loader. The only cube games that won't work are portions of those who have online and LAN gameplay. Oh and the GB Player.

But seriously, I don't recommend selling the SNES b/c there are going to be a lot of titles that just can't be put on the Virtual Console plus stubborn companies. Plus the Virtual Console will most likely have region locks.

I don't know if this was already mentioned, or if anyone knows at the moment:

1. When saving Gamecube saves on the Wii, can you use the Flash memory or do you need a Gamecube save card?

2. Can you also move all of your Gamecube saves over to the Wii's flash memory?

3. Do you think you're able to put Wii saves onto the Gamecube memory card?

4. There's suppose to be a small bit of memory in the Wii-motes, they mentioned before so you can put your Mii into it when you go to a friends house, but is there enough room and the ability to put game saves into there?

If there's anyone who knows, that'd be awesome, though at the very least atleast it'll give you something to ponder over until release day.

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?
Old Nov 5, 2006, 10:17 AM #985 of 1979
1. You need gamecube memory card for gamecube games.

2. No. But it might be possible for the Wii to access those memory cards for game purposes. Perhaps you had a cube rpg that had a sequel on the wii that imported your old character data so you didn't have to start your characters from scratch or lose any items from last time. It might be possible although I doubt it will ever be used.

3. No. Why would you? Internal flash memory and SD cards are a much better alternative.

4. I think you'll be able to put Miis, controller configurations, and very small bits of information on the Wii controllers. Beyond that I'd say game saves and more complex info and multimedia would be only for SD memory cards. There's just not enough memory on the controller.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Ahhh that was surprizing to get an answer, and so soon after, thanks Acer. Also about the putting Wii saves onto a Gamecube memorycard, it's about having portable saves.

I often go over to my friends place and play through games. So it'd be nice to be able to move my Wii saves over to a portable media so that they aren't frozen to my console.

There's nowhere I can't reach.
Old Nov 5, 2006, 10:55 AM #987 of 1979
That's why you get a SD memory card. Tons more space and pretty damn cheap too. You can get a 2 GB card for 50 bucks. For even smaller cards it's even cheaper. It's a much better solution to gamecube memory cards.

what about Red Steel? Rayman? Excite Truck? ( not to mention Zelda, it gets double props).

That right there is more than enough to keep me busy till more games come out and I am sure there are more that would interest me after I tried them out.

This was supposed to be a responce to this qoute:
The only title worth anyone's attention at lanuch is Twilight Princess.

Wii launch range: lame/boring/drivel/gay

but for some reason I can't edit anything right now.

To be honest, it's one of the best launches I've seen for any console/handheld. Well, maybe I'm also including the launch window as well..

These games are selling on hype and the fact that they're launch titles. Excite truck? Are you serious?

I don't see any appeal at all, honestly. Being realistic Trauma Center, Zelda and Metal Slug Anthology are the only I'd actually be interested in.

Hoo hoo hoo, about 13 days now. I wasn't able to preorder, so now I have to come up with a battle plan and probably camp out at a Best Buy or some shit. I'm not sure why I'm so excited. Red Steel doesn't interest me, I don't like racing games, and I'm adamant about purchasing Zelda for the Gamecube (provided it isn't available exclusively online, like in Japan).

It might be that it's a new console, or maybe I am really drawn to the motion-sensing stuff. Either way, I'll probably be playing Wii Sports for a while. If I can even get a hold of one, anyway.

Yeah I failed at preordering aswell. I'm trying to find a good time to go to wal-mart the day of. Originaly I was going to go at noon..but damned if 12-12 is just too damn long to sit in wal-mart. I'm split, I mean the Wii will be worth it. 12 hours? It will have to wait until the week of and I see what the store is doing.

Anyone know how that ticket system is suppose to work? I heard they hand out tickets and you can walk around the store until launch time. I'm thinking they call you buy the numbers on your tickets? Can you leave and come back at midnight?

There's nowhere I can't reach.

I think that sort of thing would depend on the store, if that particular store chain even has ticketing. As I recall, a few Wal-Marts at the 360's launch had a Battle Royale-style numbering system (as in, whoever beat the shit out of the people in front of them got first dibs).

The fact that Excite Truck and Elebits is nowhere the European launch makes me a sad panda. Nothing on that list looks anything like a certified classic. I'm still not convinced by Red Steel. Rayman neither. Also, the latest I've read from Edge, the control in Zelda is still not perfect, which means I get the game for GC. Fuck widescreen if that means the control is perfect...

Well the response of Zelda's controls have been a bit of a mixed bag, really. However, I'm still convinced that Zelda Wii is the purchase for me.

How much would the SNES sell for these days? Or even a Cube? I'm not too worried about selling games which may not have the chance in making it to the VC. I just need cash for my Wii!

When was this Edge? People who spent 10 hours playing it a couple days ago all have come to the conclusion that they think Wii version control is superior. So you'll take Edge's word over 10s of editors that have had hours of play time? K.

I still don't see the appeal. Okay you have BIG DAMN TRUCKS and you race around dirt tracks and stuff. Big deal.

If it were an F-Zero GX sequel sure, I'd be all over it. But it's not.
