Sucker Punch:
We were in absolute stitches at the ending, because of how ridiculously awful it was - especially that little speech. I mean, was the writer genuinely trying to be profound? Either way, why in christ's name did no one stop him? I suppose by that time it was past the point of no return... I would have been miffed to have spent money on it too.

I also neglected to mention that I've watched the entirety of Armando Iannucci's The Thick of It recently (hence ava/sig). It's a fantastically scripted, brilliantly acted, spot-on political satire and I love this show to pieces. It's vicious, brutal and cruel and very funny. Naturally the star of the show is Peter Capaldi as Malcolm Tucker, but I can't think of a single actor/character in this who doesn't perform well. The series eventually spawned In The Loop so chances are if you enjoyed the film, you'll enjoy the series.

I was very upset early this year when Armando Iannucci came to the opera and I was really excited he was there and all the 20 year old staff we have had never heard of him so kudos to you, although his finest work remains the bit on Friday Night Armistice where he got OJ Simpson to sign the bottom of a piece of paper with "I did it" written at the top.

Oh mate, philistines! I would have been well chuffed if I was there. That OJ Simpson bit was so class haha. I tell you, over the past few years Iannucci (and Chris Morris <3) have totally revolutionised comedy for me.

This week, Clash of the Titans, Rec and Futuresport.

Clash of the Titans (The recent one, not the original) was pretty good I thought. We watched the old school flat version rather than the 3d one and I still wish people making 3d films would get over the need to have things waving into the screen all the time. Anyway, special effects weren't nearly as bad as many reviews make out, plot was pretty silly but ok, the script had funny moments without breaking the fourth wall and the only real downside was the distractingly bad accent of the lead guy who couldn't decide if he wanted to be Australian or Scottish the whole way through the movie. Did like the joke with the mechanical owl too.

Rec is what Philia would describe as foreign horror. It's a decent, low-budget zombie flick with a few decent shocks in it. Worth a look if you're into that kind of thing.

Futuresport is awful, really awful. Only watched it because there was nothing else on. I can't believe Wesley Snipes paid for this any more than I could believe his Jamaican accent. Only saving grace was a throwaway reference to Speed Ball. Whatever happened to Dean Cain by the way? Apart from this terrible film of course.

Watched Rec2 last night which follows directly on from the first film. It's pretty good, almost as good as the first although let down rather by the fact the actors playing the SWAT team appear to have had no experience whatsoever of actual SWAT tactics or in fact of just generally how people who hold guns for a living carry themselves, although to be fair they are Spanish so it's possibly a highly accurate representation of Spanish special forces.

Watched Scream4 last week. It's more of tribute to the first movie than a 4th sequel. There's a lot of reference on the first movie, and those who haven't seen the past movies might get lost in the names being mentioned. Pretty generic shock value, but the twist has the same Wes Craven feel to it. It's a nice movie to watch with friends on a lazy evening.

I just finished watching Arn - The Knight Templar, a Swedish film about the Crusades. It's very good, kind of like a lower budget, less Hollywood, Kingdom of Heaven. I'd definitely recommend this one.

Tonight I watched The Crew, a Brit gangster flick set in modern Liverpool. It's ok I guess, nothing special really but better than some of the genre.

Watched The Rite yesterday. Fairly average thriller about demonic posession with the old "based on a true story" nonsense. Anthony Hopkins is in it and actually uses his own, Welsh accent briefly but it's a largely forgettable movie.

Watched Super8 last sunday. It's a pretty good movie about kids going off to adventures. The alien part doesn't really play a big role in the movie, but helps in the development of the main characters. So it's mainly about the kids rather than the alien. It made me miss being a kid.

Oh you.

I stand by what I said: it was a cop-out to me. The ending where he breaks the fourth wall felt like a lazy and anticlimactic end to what was otherwise a very involved and supposedly deep movie, but hey-- OPINIONS. *Shrug*

--------

So, I saw The Lion King recently in theaters in 3D (I was on a date), and I have to say it was great seeing the familiar characters again after so long. I half-way thought about downloading Lion King 1/2, but eh... maybe later.

In Television, I finished up with the last episodes of Doctor Who so now I have a long wait until next year when Series 7 is supposed to begin. I wont even pretend that the last episode made complete sense, but with a show like this where the main character is a walking Deus Ex Machina, I've come to accept it as Soap Opera for nerds and I will watch it forever. Fuck what anyone else thinks.

Tangentially related: While awaiting the final two or three episodes of Dr. Who to be released, I became friends with this very nerdy girl, who in addition to being a huge fan of that show, has offered to show me to the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica, which I never bothered to watch back in the day (Hype Aversion I suppose you could say was the main reason), so hopefully that will be enjoyable

Also, Finally, I just downloaded In The Loop and The Thick of It (I have a soft spot for Yes, Minister so after hearing that this show/movie were both spiritual successors, I was eager to check them out-- Bernard Black's avatar/sig combo was also to blame ) so I'll be watching them soon.

This evening I watched Hobo with a shotgun. It's a low budget, Canadian film that bizarrely stars Rutger Hauer as a tramp who arrives in a crime-ridden town and goes on a vigilante shotgun rampage. It's very silly but very enjoyable and Rutger Hauer is a very convincing tramp. The highlight though was the end credits music, which for God only knows what reason is the ending theme from The Raccoons. Worth a watch I'd say if you promise not to take it seriously.

Battlestar Galactica is the best sci-fi show ever so you won't be disappointed. Just make sure to watch them in the right order sicne it can be confusing. Their is first a mini-series you need to watch, then the season 1, some tv movies in between, more seasons, more tv movies, more seasons.

I just spit-taked all over my monitor for this one. George Carlin never hit that height of comedy, lemme tell you.

Been going back through Wonder Years reruns this last week. Also watched The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising which was by a long margin the worst book adaptation I've ever seen put to film. Nevermind that its one of the greatest children's books written in the 20th century and put aside the fact that its a honest, dry British fantasy novel (as opposed to Harry Potter which is empty, sensationalist pulp) - just seeing the film without prior context is enough to make you want to die inside.

Mall cops burst into ravens.

Saw Drive a week or so ago. Granted I was distracted by my company, I don't really understand the great reviews. It was OK at best, for me anyway. The direction was good, the story was whatevs. The opening sequence was the best part of the movie, mostly because nobody was acting.

Speaking of which, the acting was either non-existent or sub par. The two mobsters gave absolutely nauseating performances, especially. I'm generally able to get over acting, but when I see actors that I know can act either not act (Gosling) or act poorly (Cranston) I get a little peeved, what can I say?

Oh, and suddenly there's gore.

Quoted for absolute truth.

Today we watched Dead Man Running, a fairly typical brit gangster film starring Danny Dyer and Curtis "Fiddy" Jackson. It's pretty good and a lot more light hearted than similar efforts.

Also watched Annuvahood the other day which is a very funny Brit film about kids from inner city London. Like a funny Kidulthood really and I challenge any American here to watch and understand more than 20% of it without subtitles.

Watched Season of the Witch, Ironclad, Arn the Templar and I Saw the Devil recently.

Season of the Witch is a very silly Hollywood effort about Knights escorting a witch to get tried. It's hilariously anachronistic, generally very silly and for some reason, Nic Cage and Hellboy insist on keeping their American accents even though everyone else in the film is British, although a few of the Brits sound like they're trying to do an American accent oddly enough. Anyway, it's pretty shit, I wouldn't bother.

Ironclad is about Knights Templar too! Slightly more historically accurate than SotW but not much but it is a much better film, this time about a handful of knights defending a remarkably small Rochester castle against a horde of Danish mercenaries. It tries to be a lot more serious that the other but still manages to be quite silly. Worth a look though I'd say.

The third Knight tamplar film I've watched recently (And the first of the three I watched) was Arn the Templar which is Danish or Swedish or some shit and is a wicked film. The plot is complete nonsense as these things often are and it ends up being kinda like Kingdom of Heaven. Much better film than that though and definitely worth watching.

I Saw the Devil is a Korean horror film. If you've seen any Korean horror films, or infact any Korean films at all you'll know what this entails. Suffice to say there's not a happy ending. Good movie though.

This week watched Shank, Age of Heroes and Sucker Punch.

Shank is about a near-future London and gangs of kids and they're all rude boys (You get me, blood?) and it was aright but nothing like as good as Kidulthood.

Age of Heroes has got Sean Bean and Danny Dyer in so is automatically awesome. It's about a WW2 commando unit going in to Norway to steal some plans and it was ok I guess but ended a bit abruptly and isn't nearly as good as whatever that old film about British commandos going into Norway to blow up a heavy water factory was.

Sucker Punch is nothing like I thought it was going to be and was in fact much better than I thought it was going to be and is well worth a watch. Fucking good soundtrack too!

I watched The Tree of Life movie just a couple of days ago and it was the slowest movie I've ever seen. I watched a trailer on the morningnews here in Sweden and the reviewer said it was a really good movie so I (against the knowledge that moviecritics and regular people have a very different view on things...) watched it and I can't say much else than that it was a complete waste of 2 hours of my life.

Gonna get that Hobo with a shotgun movie that Bloody was talking about, atleast the title of it is awesome.

Me again!

This time I've watched Thor and Priest. Thor was pretty good actually, despite the complete hatchet job performed on Norse mythology and the fact the producers have played waaaaaaay too much Too Human, plus one or two pretty gaping plot holes but it's decent, mindless entertainment. Priest was trying a bit too hard to be The Matrix and Underworld but it was ok I guess and the Steampunk Western setting is pretty rad.

About time I update my own thread. Xenoblade and Skyrim has been sapping up my entire free time for the past 3 months lol. Anyway, here we go.

Martyrs - I cannot stop thinking about this. I've spoiled myself on purpose a long time ago by reading the plot on wiki or somewhere, and knew where it was headed and such. I didn't want to go in cringing or whatever. Thankfully, its not that cringe-worthy (like hostel or cabin fever), and it was definitely interesting plot overall. I liked the portrayal of all of the characters. There was no weak character in this movie and were all just evenly powerful in their own way. Good stuff.

Dakota Skye - Screaming indie romance about a girl with a lie detector power and a boy who cannot lie. Cute though.

The Betrayed - Minimalist set about mob kidnapping/betrayal/heist with a mom and her kid for victims. So and so, just interesting take on minimalist.

Valkyrie - Its alright. Cruise did a good job I guess. I did like the other characters some.

The Wrestler - Wow. Just... wow. Rourke was SO damn good in this. <3 Really raw and absolutely eye opening for someone who doesn't follow wrestling. Good stuff.

War, Inc. - MEH.

The Hurt Locker - Liked this quite a bit. Something for someone who's obsessed about something and loves doing no matter what are the conditions.

The Reader - I wanted to like this, but like... "who cares, they're still dead" unnerves me so much. I just cannot bring myself to even sympathize with that character. Winslet did a great job portraying but my god, I hated her character so much. Its really raw yes, but it also makes you wonder what's the point of the film.

Mother - Saw this on instant, its a good while back but I liked it quite a bit and of course, that ending. Whew. Did not see that one coming.

How ya doing, buddy?
